12.01.2022 A prospective client asked me what a logo was. This was my reply in an email: A logo can be. 1. AN ABSTRACT SHAPE A CONCEPT THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE ANY SPECIFIC MEANING.... (It may have meaning to those who help create it but none to the public). Examples are nike or commonwealth bank logos. Another example is Airc-onditioner/heating businesses - they often have wavy lines to represent cool and hot air. 2. A LITERAL ILLUSTRATION OF A PRODUCT OR SERVICE Like a simplified computer for a computer shop or service business. A tennis racket for a Tennis Coach. The tennis rack would be simplified. The colours reinforce the logo as being unique and recognisable to that company which is a recognised symbol that is associated with a company. Only a large company like Telstra can really change the colour of their logo and this is done during a huge advertising campaign. A bit like when Kentucky Fried Chicken went to KFC, this was done with a large advertising budget. Large corporations are very strict about that the colour must always be the same. Hence IBM Blue became a way of describing a particular blue. 3. INITIALS OF THE COMPANY/PRODUCT NAME This is very common. An colour and font will help make this type of logo work. 4. LOGOTYPE/ WORD ONLY A company uses a specific type face /font or modified font that becomes recognisable to them only. Many companies have their own font created at great expense.

12.01.2022 Fiver is a site where you can get a logo for $5. Off the shelve logos are freely (almost) available today. I've had a look and l think they tend to all look the same. Usually you get what you pay for. There are a few examples where really good looking logos cost next to nothing. The Nike logo cost the company $35 The Nike logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1975. The price only included the logo design, which later has been refined but the original concept has been kept in tact. Later Nike gave 500 shares of stock to the designer, which is now worth over $600,000. (source:stock logos).
