07.01.2022 Do you have a favourite books to read with your little ones or have you discovered any new books of late? Speech Pathology Australia recently handed out their book of the year awards and there are some crackers! One of the winners is ‘Meerkat Splash’ written and illustrated by Aura Parker suitable for children in the birth to 3 years age group.... Firstly, who doesn’t love meerkats? Their animated and curious mannerisms are a delight to watch. Meerkat Splash is a rhythmic and colourful picture book. In it, readers follow Meerkat Red down his burrow to meet his friends during a zany bathtime experience cleaning, washing, slipping, sliding and swimming but who makes the biggest meerkat splash? Our Speech Pathologist Tennille recommends this book as it has an engaging and relatable story, it promotes oral language extension and has beautiful pictures to support the written text for this pre-reading age group of 0-3 years. These awards help recognise the value reading has on helping children develop their language and literacy skills, and the important role that our ‘speechies’ play. At Kites, our speech pathologists work with you to develop your child’s communication and feeding development, such as how your child expresses themselves, understands language, uses speech sounds and develops early literacy. Do you think your child would love Meerkat Splash? Do you have the book at home? If so, what do you think of it? Want to know more about how our Speech Pathologies works at Kites? 03.01.2022 As you can see from the pic, Savannah plays the ukulele . In fact, she plays a pretty mean tune on it as we found out at Christmas. (Do you remember our team rocking out Jingle Bells for you last year? Well that was Savannah leading the team on the ukulele.) Savannah has been at Kites a little over a year ago now and this is her first position as an Occupational Therapist (OT) after moving to Tassie on completion of her Masters from LaTrobe University. Being an OT means yo...u look at a child and their family as a whole. You look at the family’s skills, their environment, how they spend their day now, and compare that to how they would like to spend their day. OT is particularly important for children because we cover skills other professions can’t quite put their finger on, such as learning how to play functionally, learning to attend to a task, learning to manage time and learning to manage emotions. At Kites, a typical day is a mixture of fun and work. Savannah’s time is spent seeing between 4 and 5 kids a day and sessions can vary. Sometimes I’m on the floor with a 2 year old working on play skills, and sometimes I’m discussing organisational skills with a 15 year old. Seeing a child achieve a goal that they’ve been working towards is her favourite part of the job. Working within a supportive team environment is key. It’s fantastic. We have a very supportive team culture here. We help each other out every day without judgement. Everyone is so committed to providing best practise. We all really care about the families we support and each other. We’re lucky to have Savannah at Kites. Prior to deciding upon being an OT, she was a disability support worker, and also studied molecular genetics and biotechnology in Perth, WA. Savannah also knows what it’s like to receive Occupational Therapy. I have some understanding of how the children I see experience therapy as I also have a disability and received Occupational Therapy as a child. I have a visual impairment and need adjustments and equipment in my everyday life. And we also hear that she makes a pretty good magpie sound too. You may be lucky enough to hear it one day. #kitestherapytas #therapyrocks #occupationaltherapist
