18.01.2022 **SNAKE BITE AND YOUR PET** Warmer weather = Snakes on the MOVE! *What the venom does.... Snake venom can cause the blood to stop clotting, paralysis of the mus...cles by affecting the nerve muscle junctions and secondary damage to the kidneys. There are numerous factors that will determine what sort of reaction your pet has to a snake bite. * the type of snake * amount of venom in the bite * site of the snake bite = whether the snake bit into the skin, muscle or a blood vessel all contributing factors... The venom will be working its way around your pet's body quite quickly, the speed depending on the above factors. You may have anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours before your pet will possibly die. It is very unlikely that you will see any puncture marks from the snake due to the hair on your pet. WHAT TO LOOK FOR if your pet has been bitten by a snake: - Sudden weakness, wobbliness or possible collapse. - Shaking or twitching of muscles. - Vomiting. - Salivation. - Dilated pupils - (not responsive to light) - Blood in the urine. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your veterinarian can identify the snake. They do this by counting the scales from its nose to the tip of its tail. Once identified the correct antivenom can be administered to your pet. TREATMENT If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake you must keep them as quiet and still as possible and contact a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. The sooner your pet is treated the better the chance of survival. When you arrive at the clinic your pet will have a blood test to determine if they have been bitten by a snake. If the diagnosis is a confirmed snake bite, the vet will initiate treatment consisting of intravenous fluids, the correct antivenom, supportive drugs and intensive care for 24 - 72 hours. Thankfully most of the pets brought in early with snake envenomation do go onto make a full recovery. It is certainly worth phoning and coming in straight away if you suspect your pet has been bitten. If they have been subject to a dry bite, all they will have to put up with is a blood test and possibly a few hours observation in hospital. Then its back home with the all clear. See more
18.01.2022 ***PARIS IS ON HOLD TEMPORARILY *** ***PLEASE NOTE - In keeping with our aim to protect our wildlife AND our cats and dogs, we only offer our kitties to INDOOR ...ONLY homes and our dogs to properties with DOG PROOF FENCING*** Please read our guidelines here before applying to adopt https://www.facebook.com/notes/1444849889239166/ To apply to adopt please fill out the appropriate form: For this kitty https://form.jotform.co/91463029063858 If you have any questions we’re happy to help if you email: [email protected] ABOUT PARIS Age: DOB 01.01.2017 Breed: Domestic medium Hair Kid friendly: Yes on her terms Dog friendly: Tolerant if they leave her alone Cat friendly: Yes given her own space Bird friendly: Not tested House/Litter trained: Yes Estimated size as an adult: Medium Location: Millaa Millaa Microchip # 982000405959846 Paris has been desexed, microchipped, flea and worm treated and vaccinated. Paris is a really pretty girl with beautiful blue eyes and white sox. She absolutely loves being brushed and will turn in circles when she sees you pick up a brush. As with most rescue cats, we have very little knowledge of her history so it's not uncommon to find a few issues that might be learned behaviour due to previous treatment. Paris is very affectionate but can sometimes be quite hand shy and react. She is a lovely kitty who needs to be understood and given her space when or if she needs it and will learn to trust completely in time. With love and respect, she will be a lovely companion cat.

13.01.2022 A stark and sad reminder about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the impact cats have on our native wildlife. This footage was sent to us by Luke... from Queensland and shows the toll of a roaming domestic cat on a native snake. The following day, the snake was located deceased and the cat was recorded roaming in the subsequent nights. Sadly, the event captured here is not an anomaly according to leading scientists, each day more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles like this snake are killed by cats across Australia. Pet cats alone are estimated to kill 83 million native reptiles each year. Conservation is everyone’s business and you can do your part by being a responsible cat owner and practicing cat containment 24/7. Responsible cat ownership also means safer cats by keeping our cats happy and safe indoors. For tips and tricks on how to best look after your cat indoors, visit the Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife website: http://www.safecat.org.au/ Thank you to Luke for sending us this footage.
