14.01.2022 Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery. 102 years ago today, on the 9th April 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Allen (Allan) Stewart McMaster, 3rd Battalion, master bootmaker from Victoria Street, Adamstown, New South Wales, was killed in action, age 22. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1649445... Born at Tingha, New South Wales 1895 as MacMaster to Duncan McIntyre (died 1942) and Mary (died 1957) McMaster of Stockton, New South Wales, Allen enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article137203284 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article122217222 His name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial, Adamstown Independent Order of Rechabites, Hope of Adamstown Tent No. 76 Honour Roll (photo, unveiled on the 25th April 1921) and the Adamstown Methodist Church Honour Roll. Unfortunately, no Roll of Honour circular was submitted. There is no memorial inscription to Allen at his parent’s gravesite at Sandgate Cemetery, and I am unable to place a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies to honour his service and supreme sacrifice. The gravesite has now deteriorated badly. PRESBYTERIAN-12NE. 44. http://sandgate.northerncemeteries.com.au//war-/index.php Younger brother Norman Gordon (Reg No-59634, born 1899, died 1987) also served 1st A.I.F. Older brother Colin Alexander (Reg No- 26505, born 1893, died 1978) also served 1st A.I.F. Many thanks to Marion Davis for the photo of the Adamstown Independent Order of Rechabites, Hope of Adamstown Tent No. 76 Honour Roll. Lest We Forget.

13.01.2022 100 years ago today, on the Sunday morning of the 15th June 1919, the Waratah Presbyterian Church Roll of Service was unveiled by Mrs Allan, who had four sons enlist and serve in The Great War, one of her boys, John Robert Allan, falling at the 1st Battle of Passchendaele. This wooden Honour Roll has been inscribed with 21 names of those who enlisted from the parish, with only two names designated as fallen, and John Robert Allan is awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemete...ry. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139442129 The whereabouts of this historic piece of Waratah history is unknown, and I eagerly await a photo for all to see. Corporal John Robert Allan, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade, ironmonger from "Craigilee", 39 Elizabeth Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, fell on the 16th October 1917, age 24 years, 11 months. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1663154 Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 1st November 1892 to John Robert (died 1936) and Mary Elizabeth (died 1942) Allan, Jack enlisted March 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W. Mr Allan was killed by a gas shell at Westhoek Ridge, and sadly his remains were never recovered, so his name has been inscribed on The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 11), Belgium. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1504339 There is no memorial inscription on the headstone at his parent’s grave, and I am unable to place a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies to honour Jack’s supreme sacrifice for King and Country over 100 years ago. PRESBYTERIAN-2NE. 24. http://sandgate.northerncemeteries.com.au//world-war-1-mem Obituary for Jack’s mother Mary, Newcastle Morning Herald - 22nd September, 1942. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Allan, formerly of Mayfield, who died at the age of 82, was buried in the Presbyterian portion of Sandgate Cemetery. She was the widow of John Robert Allan, and a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Gillies. Mrs. Allan was born in Newcastle, and lived here until three years ago, when she moved to Sydney. For many years she was associated with the Waratah-Mayfield Presbyterian Church. Four of her sons served in the war of 1914-18, one of them (Jack) being killed in action in 1917. She leaves five sons and nine grandchildren. Older twin brothers Duncan Gilles (Reg No-3752, born 1891, died 1961) and Ronald Victor (Reg No-8338, born 1891, died?) also served 1st A.I.F. Younger brother Cecil Richard (Reg No-712, born 1898, died 1983) also served 1st A.I.F. Lest We Forget.
