21.01.2022 Why you should be reading with your children Reading books with your child helps to stimulate their imagination and creativity and encourage language development all at the same time! If done regularly, it will lead to successful development of reading and spelling skills. Reading with your child also encourages their development in a peaceful, loving environment that enhances positive parent-child relationships. ... When should I read with my child? Anytime! The more exposure they have to books and reading the better. Its nice however, to pick a time when you can relax together and take your time to answer all their questions. Creating a bedtime story ritual is always popular as this is a time both parent and child are often most relaxed. TV or books? If you offer children the choice between TV and a bedtime story, its likely they will choose TV. Do not teach your child to see books as a threat to their TV watching time. Instead specify a reasonable time that they finish watching TV each night, and try to be consistent. Once the TV is off, ask them if they would like a story before going to sleep. If they say no, accept it, but it is still bedtime! In this way, books are seen as enjoyable activity, not as an alternative to television. Bedtime is ideal, especially if the whole family can be involved. If you make bedtime reading a daily activity, it will add to your childs feelings of security and help them to settle down more easily at night. Final Notes Reading needs to be a positive experience. The more exposure they have to reading at a young age, the more they will want to read. Try to select books based around their interests to help motivate them even more. Dont worry if they are too young or have difficulties with literacy, just hearing the story and answering questions about it will stimulate them and help them with their overall language development.

20.01.2022 The Speech Pathology Team were lucky enough to take a short break at last week's JP Show Day! The animal petting zoo was a huge hit with the kids (and adults)! Imitating animal sounds and gestures is an important part of language development for younger children. As they grow older, they will be able to practice their describing and commenting skills. Most children love animals, and talking about them is a fun way to stimulate emerging language ability. Some ideas include: Na...ming animals and describing them (e.g. size, colour, shape, body parts, fur), naming the baby animals (e.g. fawn, puppy, kitten), imitating sounds (especially for younger children), describing where animals live (e.g. farm, jungle, house) and naming animals in similar categories, drawing pictures of animals and describing them, matching the animal with their favourite foods (e.g. monkey and bananas, rabbit and lettuce). Older children sometimes have a favourite animal. Its a great idea to encourage them and talk about them as much as possible. Get online together to learn about animals or read books about them. Think about the different plurals including irregular ones (e.g. sheep). Feel free to contact us if youd like any more help or advice!

10.01.2022 Are you looking for something different to put a new spin on bedtime book reading with your children? Have a look at the Imagistory app from the iTunes store. This free app gives you two wordless picture books with beautiful illustrations to encourage your child's imagination to come to life! Wordless picture books are a great way of developing your child's oral narrative skills. The ability to tell a story or series of events with precision and clarity is the means by which we organise and make sense of the events in our lives and is an important skill for young children to develop. Try incorporating oral narratives into everyday situations such as asking your child what they did at school, retelling the plot from a book or movie, or making plans and predictions for the future. Happy storytelling! http://imagistory.com

01.01.2022 As many of you parents and teachers know, children can be notoriously poor listeners! Good listening skills are not only needed to cope with the demands of everyday life but are also the basis for strong literacy skills. Teaching children the art of "listening" is one of the most important abilities we as adults can help them develop. Take a look at the resource below for some fun activities and games you can do with your child to help them become ACTIVE listeners!
