25.01.2022 Team Member Tuesday Say hello to Joy! Joy has been a valued member of the Klint team since 2017. She currently shares her time between our clinics and Eastern Health’s Movement Disorders Program where she sees clients mainly with Parkinson’s and other related conditions. She's our movement disorder expert and is well known in this area of Physiotherapy. However, her experience spans to a wide range of other neurological conditions, such as stroke, brain tumours, acquired br...ain injuries, and multi-trauma injuries following car accidents. She has undertaken a range of post-graduate courses that compliment her analysis and treatment of human movement, including training in Bobath therapy. You will find Joy practicing in our Heidelberg clinic or travelling around the Northern suburbs for home visits, providing therapy that focuses on making memorable experiences for her clients. She is a strong advocate of normal movement in everyday activities such as walking and running. As a keen sportswoman herself, she especially enjoys helping her clients engage in sports and recreation as part of their rehab journey. In her spare time, you can find her on the golf course, or participating in some social tennis!

24.01.2022 Team Member Tuesday Say hello to Yasmin! Following her graduation from the University of Liverpool in 2012, Yasmin accumulated seven years of physiotherapy experience in the UK before moving to Australia and joining our team in 2019. In addition to her neurology background, she has the added bonus of having a musculoskeletal and orthopaedic background too!... Yasmin's particular clinical interests include functional neurological disorders, spasticity and paediatric congenital conditions. Her treatment style ensures that client goals and treatment plans are relevant to them, and aims to involve the hobbies and interests of her clients as much as possible. She treats both children and adults, and you will find her mainly in our Highett clinic. When she has spare time, she enjoys weight lifting, rock climbing and exploring what scenery Australia has to offer. She has also recently taken on the added responsibility as a parent...to her gorgeous new puppy known as Mr Sherlock!

24.01.2022 Good luck to everyone participating in 27 for Parkinson's! The virtual event starts today, which will have participants walking 27 times in 27 days to support the 27,000 Victorians living with Parkinson's disease. You can find out more about the cause here https://www.parkinsonswalk.org.au/ Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition which we provide therapy for at Klint. The condition particularly affects movement and coordination, however most systems in th...e body can be affected and the nature and severity of symptoms vary from person to person. Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s, however there is a variety of medications and treatments available to control or reduce the symptoms. Exercise plays such an important part in managing Parkinson's symptoms. Research has shown that consistent exercise over a prolonged period of time can slow the progression of Parkinson's and delay the need to increase medication. Treadmill training, balance exercises, Pilates and even dancing are all examples of exercise methods our physiotherapists recommend for individuals with Parkinson's, but the possibilities are endless! We’ve written an article describing how exercise can actually influence the structure of the brain to the benefit of individuals with Parkinson's disease. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, check out the article here: https://www.klintneuro.com.au//power-exercise-people-livin

20.01.2022 Team Member Tuesday Say hi to Tracey Although if you’re a regular at Klint, you probably already have! Trace was the first receptionist to join the team in 2018, and since then she has played such an important role in making the booking process at Klint easy and pleasant, making people feel welcome in the clinic and developing our administrative processes.... Tracey has recently moved from the Highett clinic to be based in our Glen Waverley clinic every Monday. When she isn’t being a superhero receptionist, she is working towards completing her PhD and clinical training in Clinical Neuropsychology at Monash University. Her research is focused on better understanding how children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder think, feel, and behave. Trace loves to travel, and her sociable nature helped her to create many friendships all around the world. She is a qualified ski-instructor and is keen to get back out on the slopes when the new snow season rolls around. During lockdown, she is knuckling down on her study, practicing the five languages she knows, and perfecting her dumpling-making skills

19.01.2022 Team Member Tuesday Say Hi to Vathana! Vathana is Klint’s senior paediatric therapist, and her role is to mentor and provide clinical oversight over paediatric services and work closely with the therapy team to support growth and development. ... Vathana has specialised in paediatrics in the last 20 years and has worked in both the UK and Australia gaining extensive experience in hospital and community settings including at the Royal London Hospital and University College London Hospital. She has also completed Bobath training in paediatrics, her post-graduate certificate in paediatrics at The University of Melbourne and was funded by the National Institute of Health and Research to complete her masters in Clinical evidence and Research at Hertfordshire University. She loves a challenge and is not scared to tackle any hurdle that comes her way. Although she is not available for appointments, her expertise is carried through our paediatric team. In her free time, Vathana loves to dance. She has recently tried belly dancing and has returned back to ballet classes. She also enjoys live music and any opportunity to enjoy the sunshine

19.01.2022 Team member Tuesday Say hello to Alison! Ali joined us last year as one of the senior physiotherapists on our team. Since graduating from La Trobe University, she has had extensive experience in a range of settings in the neurological field. She has been working in neurological outpatient rehabilitation for over 10 years, including at Western Health and the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. ... Ali is passionate about helping her clients work towards optimal recovery using a variety of treatment modalities. She also works hard to keep her skills up to date, and thus she has completed an impressive number of post-graduate courses, including but not limited to; gait and running retraining, Pilates for neurological clients, sensation retraining post stroke, student supervision, upper limb treatment, spasticity management, and vestibular rehabilitation. Her appreciation for education led her to the opportunity to return to La Trobe University as a neurological physiotherapy tutor, and she has enjoyed being a mentor and guide to other therapists. You’ll find Ali’s friendly face in our Highett clinic on Mondays and Thursdays. Outside of work, Ali loves to spend time with her friends and family and is keen on outdoor activities including hiking, camping and skiing

16.01.2022 Team Member Tuesday Meet Penny, one of our senior physiotherapists! Penny joined the Klint team in 2018 as our clinical lead neurological physiotherapist. She has many years of physiotherapy experience and a Masters degree in Health majoring in stroke. On top of this, she has advanced level training in the Bobath concept, neurological hydrotherapy, spasticity management, upper limb rehabilitation, gait and running retraining, and seating prescription to name a few.... As you can see, Penny brings a wealth of neuro experience to our team, and she has been an extremely valued and respected mentor to our other superstar therapists. In her own sessions, Penny loves to be surprised and challenged by her clients with their resilience and movement potential. She shares her knowledge freely to empower her clients to be able to think through their own barriers and needs. She has particular expertise in Facial Nerve Palsy and Functional Neurological Disorder. You will find her mainly in our Glen Waverley and Heidelberg clinics, but pops in to co-treat in many Klint client sessions across the practice. In her spare time, she’s been enjoying DIY tasks around the house and in the garden, and is proud to announce that she has recently learned how to use a drop saw! She is a mum to two lovely, Disney-obsessed young girls, and occasionally doesn’t mind getting out of the house for a run when the Disney music gets a bit old...

16.01.2022 Client Spotlight This smiling face belongs to our client Sarah! Sarah started therapy with our therapist Kevin in August, and since then they have been working hard together in our Glen Waverley clinic. Sarah has a rare genetic neurological disorder called Rett Syndrome, a condition known for leading to significant impairments in body movement and affect a wide range of skills such as the ability to speak, walk, or eat. ... As you can imagine, this has heavily impacted Sarah’s overall development and ability to perform everyday tasks. Because of this, the general goal for Sarah’s therapy has been to increase her independence when doing daily activities. Sarah has made some super impressive progress towards becoming more physically independent since working with us: When she wakes up in the morning, she can now take off her doona and get out of bed by herself During meal times, she is now able to feed herself with a spoon after having worked on her fine motor skills She can now move her legs around to get into a kneeling position on her own, when she previously was not able to kneel at all She can now hold a crawling position for an extended period of time, despite not having the opportunity to crawl as a young child (next step - crawling movement!) Rather than needing to be lifted in and out of her family’s four wheel drive, she is now almost able to get in and out of the car without any assistance Not only can she now walk up stairs, she has also transitioned from walking 100m as her furthest distance without an aid to walking 1.6km just a few days ago! We’re stoked at the progress Sarah is making both in the clinic and at home, and can’t wait to see what she achieves next. Congratulations on an impressive couple of months, Sarah! #rettsyndromeawareness

Full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid, long-term or short-term, we believe all carers make a huge contribution to our community. We would like to express our appreciation for the carers who work with our clients to help them ...in their everyday lives. For many, having a carer means that they are able to attend physiotherapy, which helps them to live to their full potential. From all of us at Klint, thank you for all that you do!! 04.01.2022 Client spotlight Meet Layla! Layla has just finished her second full week of intensive therapy with Monica at our Glen Waverley clinic. She has a rare genetic syndrome that causes learning difficulties, meaning that she requires explicit instruction when learning to execute tasks.... Layla had her first intensive with Monica in March. Back then, she wasn't able to use her hands to pull herself up or to hold on to things for support. During this intensive, Monica worked with Layla to practice holding onto things, such as a chair or a bed. By the end of the week, she was able to pull herself up to stand to a chair independently. This week, the goal of her intensive was to learn how to use her walking frame independently. Her ability to stand had improved and she had learned how to hold onto her walker. However, although she knew how to hold on, she wasn't sure how to take steps forward. By the end of the week, Layla was super proud of herself because she was able to move around on her own. We're really impressed by the work she has put in this week, and her ability to give things a go with a smile on her face . Go to our Instagram (@klint_neuro) to check out her walk! We’ll see you again in a few months, Layla!

02.01.2022 Client spotlight Check out our client Bob! Bob has been working with our therapist Daina, after having experienced a stroke in 2017 that significantly impacted his walking ability. He recently completed a block of intensive physiotherapy to work on his walking pattern, with the specific goals of increasing speed and endurance so he and his wife can go on outings and travel together more easily.... During his intensive, Bob worked hard to improve the range of motion in his ankle, the placement of his right foot when walking, and his ability to shift his weight or step onto his right leg. He also swapped his walking stick for Activator Poles, which allowed him to stand tall and reduce the amount of weight or lean he places onto the pole. Overall, he made an impressive improvement in his walking speed both with and without a walking aid. Bob has been an extremely dedicated client who consistently and diligently completes his home exercise program, and this is demonstrated not only by his improvements but also his ability to remember whole sequences from his home exercise program unprompted! Congratulations on your hard work and dedication both in and out of the clinic, Bob!
