25.01.2022 Our Carum Primary School project focused on modernising the school to reflect its contemporary standard of education. A particular challenge was restoring the 150-year-old heritage building to its former glory. Converted into a fully purposed prep learning area, the existing heritage building provides a student kitchen and café, in order to create and support an integrated relationship with the school’s animal farm and veggie garden. Completed in 2011, the school provides a c...entralised facility, incorporating multiuse programing, allowing easy access to the whole school population and wider school community. Intimate withdrawal spaces are provided within each class area to allow for individual or small group activities. Designed with colour, curve and texture, these pod-like spaces create enhanced learning environments. Importantly, as the school promotes environmental studies throughout their educational programs, the design integrates natural cross ventilation, night purging, solar collection and intentional rainwater collection throughout the site. 21.01.2022 On the western plains of Yorta Yorta country, Stage 2 of Echuca Twin Rivers School completes the integration of three former schools onto a single site, forming a unique partnership between special developmental and primary education communities. Stage 2 is composed of specialist student learning communities, a gymnasium and arts centre, an applied learning centre, landscaped gardens, orchard, irrigated sports oval, cycling circuit, play areas, carparking and on-site bus acce...ss. By mirroring the building forms of Stage 1 construction and applying consistency between materials palettes, Stage 2 seamlessly assimilates with its existing built environment. We take great pride in this project, as not only was it a rare opportunity to masterplan and design an entirely new campus, but Stage 2 was also our first project documented with #autodeskrevit. It’s inspiring and flexible environments promote the performing and creative arts as central to the school’s identity. The heart of the project was to realise the school’s endeavor to provide its students with an wholistic and accommodating arts program. The Centre was de...signed over two levels, incorporating Music studios, Tuition rooms, Art studios, a Junior Library and an Indonesian studio. The levels have access to dedicated outdoor learning spaces and an exhibition gallery. 11.01.2022 To the east of the site at Echuca Twin Rivers School, a large community hub and arts building forms an acoustic barrier along the boundary interface with neighbouring properties. It shares a common materiality with the specialist and primary schools buildings, boldly defined by corrugated metal and brickwork in colours that reference the plumage of the local plains wanderer bird. Comprising sensory and interactive gardens, raised courtyards, flexible learning environments and an abundance of translucent walls and glazing, this school won the Project of Distinction Award in the 2010 School Design Awards! The school offers a strong connection to the outdoors and the many sensory based experiences that come with outdoor learning. Catering for a wide variety of ch...ildren, with both intellectual and physical disability, the design principally assists with the creation of learning environments that support a broad approach to teaching children with special needs, in a fun, stimulating and safe way. 08.01.2022 Merging the Echuca South, Echuca West and Echuca Specialist primary schools, we recently completed the first stage of our Echuca Twin Rivers School project. The project draws inspiration from the critically endangered plains-wanderer bird, that is native to the region, with the buildings taking the shape of its outstretched wings; defining both enclosed courtyards and sheltered outdoor learning spaces. In the community kitchen, the circular floor motif found in the specialist school is repeated in resilient vinyl flooring. 08.01.2022 The sequence of internal spaces in the new specialist building at Echuca Twin Rivers School culminates in a central multipurpose space that reaches for the sky, allowing light and air to filter down and making this an inviting space for students and staff alike. 05.01.2022 The Mount Pleasant Road Primary School and Kindergarten, located in Nunawading, comprise several flexible learning spaces all connected to a circular central courtyard. The integration of both internal and external learning spaces was at the forefront of the school’s design. Key principles were to promote engagement with families and broader communities, promote peer teaching and feedback and to create a facility that employs ecologically sustainable design. This was achieved... by providing efficient cross ventilation and storm water run-off, natural material usage, rain garden implementation and the utilisation of multicell polycarbonate glazing, to reduce heat loss while allowing natural light in. 05.01.2022 Today’s post showcases McKinnon Primary School, one of our early school projects. Our work here involved creating an initial masterplan, to provide a sense of coherency throughout the school. It was clear that creating stimulating and varied indoor teaching areas with complementary outdoor environments was paramount. Hence, we designed new classroom spaces, outdoor links and a Learning Information Centre, which includes a variety of open and flexible learning areas, ‘Pod’ lik...e classrooms and spaces with mobile furniture to allow for program-based school events. A gallery courtyard enables a visually engaging link to the new art room facilities and creates a wonderful connection to outdoors. A central IT hub/performance area, and large operable doors from classrooms allow children to have direct access to the outside courtyards, physically and visually. As well as this, we designed a new fully equipped gymnasium space, so the school can house a number of recreational activities. Rammed earth, brick and composite panel roofing have been used for their durability and thermal properties, while glazing, transparent lining and translucent roofing maximize natural daylight and minimize artificial light. Each learning studio is complemented by a smaller retreat, communal kitchen, and bathroom to enhance living skills and self-care. The studios are enclosed by large glazed acoustic sliding doors that allow for sound attenuation without sacrificing visual connectivity, and allow staff to look out for their students. 01.01.2022 Our Junior Multipurpose Hall for @hillcrestccvic is defined by graphic angular shapes that wrap around the exterior and interior of the building and is enlivened by contrasting materialities. This concept is expressed throughout the building's detailing, from the raked windows and brickwork to the smallest sharknose edges of the bench seats and servery.
