25.01.2022 Have you read the newspaper? In South Australia, there are surveys to be conducted by the government with learners and P-Plate drivers, focusing on the methodology they experienced in learning to drive. At present there are two methods. Competency Based, (CBT&A) or the Vehicle On Road Test, (VORT). CBT&A is a very worthwhile approach and while it could do with some tweeting, is what I offer at this Driving School. With an underlying educational and structured training program, the CBT&A creates a well rounded, competent driver.

25.01.2022 Vacancies are limited. Please book in advance to secure a time slot. As a former RAA instructor, I offer a high quality service with a structured Driver Education Course.

23.01.2022 Here is a question for you: Can anyone describe the "System of Car Control"?

23.01.2022 Regarding lessons at this time with the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the current low spread of COVID-19 in South Australia and NT, I plan to continue lessons at a reduced level for the moment. Vehicles will be sanitised between lessons and I ask that clients sanitise their hands before their lesson. If you are unwell, you must NOT attend your lesson. As this is an evolving situation I will continue to monitor the advice and when the situation changes I will act on that advice. Thank you for your support and understanding. Peter

23.01.2022 Please book in advance for lessons. We are currently booked till late March.

18.01.2022 Continued: When sitting for a learners permit, the idea is that people LEARN the road rules. This knowledge base is essential for passing your tasks in your log book. Questions will be asked in accordance with each task to ensure that the learner has this knowledge base and if this is lacking, further training will be required. I suggest people STUDY their road rule book before commencing lessons.

18.01.2022 While our focus focus is on CBT&A Training, my colleague may be able to assist with Vort (Vehicle On Road Test), so please ask. We offer a high standard of training.

18.01.2022 Please be aware that I do not train for VORT testing. I work with CBT&A

14.01.2022 Please be aware that if you choose to change instructors during your CBT training, there are rules and regulations which have to be followed and this may mean re-evaluation of areas already marked off in your book.

13.01.2022 In regard to Social Distancing: How about we keep our 3 second distance safety margin between our vehicles so we dont meet by accident? Keep well and keep safe.

11.01.2022 Continued: Manoeuvres are required to be accurate to the standard set out in your book. Near enough is NOT good enough! When your practice tasks in units 1 & 2 consult your book and practice to standard!

09.01.2022 Currently, Lessons are $70 for an Hour and $100 for Ninety Minutes in Morphett Vale and surrounding suburbs. Please book ahead. We are booked till December at present.

09.01.2022 Let me try to clear up some misunderstandings regarding CBT&A approach to learning to drive. There seems to be an idea that all that is required is a drive around and if all looks good things should be marked off. I would draw people's attention to the details of the tasks as set out in your book.

08.01.2022 Learning to drive is an important life skill which takes time to achieve. If you hear of people passing in 5 to 6 lessons, this should be reported to the appropriate Government department. The average number of lessons to learn to be a competent, safe driver, is 15 to 16. Avoid taking short-cuts with such an important life skill.

08.01.2022 Another year draws to a close. We will be closing for the Christmas break. Let me take this opportunity to say thanks to the support from our clients and to wish you all a very Happy Christmas, and a Safe New Year and holiday period. We are booked out till February 2019. Please book lessons early if you are keen to use our service.

08.01.2022 Hope you had a safe and enjoyable Easter. Your support is greatly appreciated. We are currently booked out till June so please book early to avoid disappointment.

07.01.2022 Thank you all for your continued support. I now have no vacancies until late May, early June. .

07.01.2022 Some thoughts on your driving practice. My experience during many years as a Driving Instructor and Music Teacher is supported by Fiona McPherson in her book Perfect Memory Training and others like Carl Rogers, Norman Doidge and Martin Seligman to name a few. Allow me to expand on Fionas thoughts about how to approach learning, setting goals, time management and monitoring progress. Many people consider that if they spend enough time at the wheel, they will gain the knowle...dge they need to successfully control a vehicle in all situations. I question this approach. Fiona suggests that If we have not set ourselves realistic, appropriate goals and realistic time management with effective performance and recall checks, the outcomes will be haphazard. A lot depends on our desired outcome. Whether we are keen to simply have a shallow knowledge enough to pass a test or some understanding of process, or a depth of understanding and solid knowledge base which will assist us through our life of driving. Goals: Fiona outlines the importance of setting specific goals for your practice sessions. My thoughts are to set specific, attainable goals such as: to determine what is required to turn right at an intersection or traffic light. The next practice session might take this a step further to assess what has been learnt. First instruct in the task, talk through the task and then assess whether learning has in fact taken place. This process is an ongoing one and loops if you like. Time management: In her book, Fiona makes the point about the importance of determining what it is that you need to learn about and to allocate time constructively. Utilize the time for learning so that tasks are learnt solidly and can be recalled at the appropriate moments. Fiona states that one should not use time as their yard stick, but rather the value of the practice during that time. Monitoring/Assessing: Monitor effectively to ensure that learning has taken place. From what Fiona states, it appears to me that a learner should be motivated to self-evaluate while being guided by supervising drivers and their instructor. Improving your monitoring skills will assist your learning process. This is also a part of the K2Drive message. It is well worth your while to attend a Keys2Drive session with a qualified instructor. People stopping too soon. An important part of Fionas message is that often people feel that they have mastered the task and stop practicing or feel that they have done enough before mastery has been achieved. This can be due to various factors. e.g. A faulty understanding of what it takes to integrate the skills of a task, failing to correctly check the understanding and recall of the task, lacking in motivation to achieve the task, poor selection of goals, are just a few. You can find more information from the book: McPherson, Fiona. Perfect Memory Training. Random House Books 2009 Hope you find this useful. I promote happy and safe motoring.

01.01.2022 About CBT&A approach, continued: So, for example, when a person suggests that they know how to turn left at a traffic light, relevant questions will be asked. In 40 years of training, I have not found learner's able to answer these questions without further training! When the principles for ALL possibilities have been covered, a drive will confirm if the knowledge is understood. Further training is required in the majority of cases! The standard is 80% with 100% law! What is ...being assessed consists of the use of the System of Car Control and in the correct sequence, including 'correct' braking application, correct observation at the correct time, correct judgement of the situation, correct positioning before, during and following the turn, with a correct steering method applied. The vehicle must be in full control at all times with the correct and timely application of acceleration. All law points must be 100% correct. That is ONE situation for ONE PART of a task. Now then, do your ideas on this line up with mine? That is where my self-assessment forms come in handy. Most of the time a learner's idea of how they are going does not line up with mine. Our structured course ensures that all knowledge base is covered correctly to ensure a safe, efficient, defensive driver. Hope this helps. Please scroll through the rest of the posts. See more
