25.01.2022 Craig Beck - thanks for the intro to Margie.

24.01.2022 Well, its been a bit of an up and down week. Weve seen Covid cases dropping around Australia, but state premiers declaring borders will remain shut for some time yet. Some strong corporate profit results have been offset by other weaker ones, and China continues to make life difficult for our export industries this time its wine exports that are in the crosshairs. With all of this going on it can be easy to feel overwhelmed, and to feel like youre not in control. One st...rategy that is vitally important is to separate out those things we can control (or influence) from those we cant and to focus on the ones we can control. I had an interesting conversation this week with Michael Graf, whos a board member of Good2Give, an organisation that brings companies and charities together by facilitating and managing staff giving programs. Given there has been a significant increase in the number of people needing support from charities, Michael highlighted one strategy for those whore still able to donate that may result in a doubling of your contributions. This is a practical way of working on the things we can control, and making a significant difference. To find out more watch the video below: #KnightswoodHouse #covid19 #finance #strategy

24.01.2022 This article is written by Barry Ritholtz whos thoughts I also respect. While written from a US market perspective, he breaks down the market performance and compares this to the reality many people are seeing on Main Street and explains why the markets could be right. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/dmU97-H #KnightswoodHouse #finance #market

24.01.2022 So, the statisticians this week gave us formal confirmation that we are in a recession, but the share-market went up. Weve had a number of questions about this. We'll talk about what this announcement means and why investors dont appear to be worried. Lastly, Id like to wish all the dads a Happy Fathers Day for tomorrow. I hope you have a good day and are well looked after.... #KnightswoodHouse #recession #shares #forecasts #markets

23.01.2022 Last Sunday was supposed to be the 50th running of the City2Surf, but unfortunately Covid has put paid to that like so many other things we had thought certain. While in the grand scheme of things a run is not that important, it is one of the highlights of the year for many and for an ever shrinking group of Legends whove featured in every running of this great race its a significant blow. Hopefully they are still all able to line up at the next (official) running the...yll all deserve a gold Garmin (a running watch)! The loss of certainty feeds into this weeks discussion about forecasting. While predicting the future has always been fraught with danger we look at why its increasingly difficult and why I regular mention that my crystal ball smashed years ago so I dont try to. But one of our roles is to help you prepare for an uncertain future, so how do we do this? #KnightswoodHouse #finance #certainty #covid19

23.01.2022 What are the critical issues you need to examine as part of an Insurance Check-up? Following our discussion a few weeks ago about the benefits many people aren’t aware of in their insurance policies, we have a look at the critical issues that can catch people out with insurance contracts. Given summer is coming and with it (possibly) fires, storms and floods, it’s definitely time to check what you are covered for. #KnightswoodHouse #finance #insurance

20.01.2022 Have you noticed during media coverage of the coronavirus crisis the explosion in instant expertise about epidemiology? Its the same with economic and market news. Everyone has an opinion, for sure. But that doesnt mean they can see the future. This article includes some wise words on forecasting. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/gaHAsTA

19.01.2022 Ive spent the past week pondering a friends comment to me that capitalism as we know it is dead. This was not something that Id expect to come from the mouth of someone who has spent his career working in the centre of corporate finance, but hes highly educated and a deep thinker, so I was forced to think about this and start searching for arguments on both sides. Im certainly not there yet, but in the following video I talk about my progress to date. One of the writers ...I mentioned is Viktor Shvets, a senior Macquarie Group strategist. Macquarie is certainly an organisation regarded as one of the bastions of capitalism, so his thoughts on the changes to the global economy are fascinating. You can listen to an extended interview with him on Bloomberg here. https://lnkd.in/gfrevpw Lastly, something to lighten the mood, and it speaks to changing the way we think and act. We all bemoan the amount of spam we receive in our inbox, and the number of scam phone calls we receive. Were all taught to delete them and ignore them, but what would happen if you gave into the little devil on your shoulder and responded and played along? 15.01.2022 This week I learned of the tragic death of a member of my running club hed taken his own life. Although I didnt know him, the stories Ive heard over the past few days paint a picture of someone who was so full of life that they were the last person youd expect to be suffering like this. I dont know what led him down this dark alley, but an increase in mental health issues resulting from the social isolation and financial pressures has been something that mental health ...experts have been warning were a likely outcome. We discuss this and a new initiative we are part of that will try and tackle the financial pressures for some of those most in need. You can find more details about the initiative by clicking here: https://lnkd.in/g86DBJZ Also worth reading this week is a follow up article from Howard Marks on Uncertainty. He delves further into the topic and the implications for us as investors https://lnkd.in/gSs6RiS Lastly, a great article on the power of the most amazing lesson you can learn at a young age. A good reminder for many of us of the power of compound interest, and a great introduction to the subject for young adults https://lnkd.in/geU6jif

14.01.2022 One of the concerns we have about the fallout from Covid is the financial distress it can cause and the flow on effects from this on some of the vulnerable members of the community. We highlight the distressing issue of Elder Abuse: what is it, how can it be identified and how we try and assist. This is something we should all be aware of. Watch the video learn more.... #KnightswoodHouse #covid19 #finance #community

13.01.2022 Another dramatic week, and its worth thinking about some of the changes weve seen this year and the impact they may have. Weve also come across a number of interesting articles this week that are work reading: The first explains the concept of risk in a very powerful way, in particular how we tend to focus on the odds of an event and the average consequences of that event, but its the tail end consequences (the low probability but high cost ones) of that event that are mo...st important https://lnkd.in/gMu9STi. Last week we spoke about the concern about the potential for increased mental health issues as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions. This short article highlights what has been seen in California as a result https://lnkd.in/gbqyxPu #KnightswoodHouse #Covid19 #finance

11.01.2022 Well, a dramatic week on the domestic front with a continued increase in Covid-19 diagnoses in Australia, and further announcements from the federal government of an extension to the ongoing support packages for businesses and individuals bearing the brunt of the economic impact. We talk about the implications for you, and what we are doing to help people through this period of uncertainty. On a lighter note, I mentioned waves from last week that we saw up and down the coastl...ine. In case you missed it, heres some footage from near Shelley Beach at Manly (thanks for the pointer Andrew) https://lnkd.in/dREcCdH #KnightswoodHouse #covid19

11.01.2022 What a week. While the US election dominated the headlines and the airtime, the issue that will have a far bigger impact on many of us was the cut in interest rates by the Reserve Bank. 11.01.2022 We had an interesting discussion with a client this week. They were concerned about one of their adult children whos about to start a family, but they dont have any spare cashflow because of their big mortgage. Our client was concerned that if anything goes wrong, they arent adequately protected, but their kids dont seem worried. It reminded me of a situation from a few years ago where someone else I knew was in the same situation and their retirement plans were blown o...ut of the water because one of their grown up children suffered a significant health event, and had to move back home to be supported and cared for. We talk about the impact on them, and also steps you may consider taking to prevent the financial issues they experienced. #KnightswoodHouse #Finance #cashflow #retirement #financialplanning

10.01.2022 This week were looking at the long term implications of the current slowdown on those under 35. The ramifications are quite significant given that most of the growth in peoples earnings occurs within the first 10 years of entering the workforce. We look at strategies that may help mitigate this, and also discuss the steps you can take to address this. The article that prompted this was published by EY, and the full paper can be read here. https://lnkd.in/d5K5QRH #KnightswoodHouse #finance

09.01.2022 Spring is sprung (almost), and with a change in the air, theres a change in the country as well. There are questions being raised about the unequal treatment of people and businesses from the emergency rules that have been enacted, and were now seeing pushback against them in an attempt to resolve this. Weve seen reporting season for listed companies over the past few weeks. Some have done very well, others have struggled as expected. The big concern is the lack of confide...nce and the ability to make forecasts because there is so much that is unknown. We talk about these issues today, plus what the Federal Reserves announcements on Thursday night (our time) could mean for interest rates in the longer term. Enjoy the warmer weather. #KnightswoodHouse #forecasts #spring #finance

09.01.2022 I watched an incredible documentary this week about a competition called the Calcio Storico. Its a competition in Florence that traces its origins back 2,000 years. Its completely mad. Brutal, completely amateur and only 3 games a year amongst the same 4 teams, each representing part of Florence.... I was captivated by it. But it had me thinking: what we could learn from it about strategies to manage retirement planning and Covid lockdown? Click the video to see more: #KnightswoodHouse #retirementplanning #strategies

09.01.2022 In the last few days Ive also read two very interesting articles. The first is from one of my favourite commentators Howard Marks, the founder of Oaktree Capital. This article appears to have been written as much for his own benefit as ours, as he seeks to make sense of the rise in the sharemarkets over the past few months, despite the global pandemic. He explores the cases both for and against the market strength, and like most things in this world each side has valid points meaning the reality is likely somewhere in the middle. 08.01.2022 The second is quite different but ties in with my discussion last week. Wired magazine co-founder, Kevin Kelly, posted a link on his Twitter feed to his '68 bits of unsolicited advice' as his 68th birthday present to the world. There is a lot to learn from his brief observations, my favourite (which also includes my new favourite word) being: The universe is conspiring behind your back to make you a success. This will be much easier to do if you embrace this pronoia. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/gquuzfu #KnightswoodHouse #unsolicited #advise

08.01.2022 A problem with trying to time the market is that it rests on the binary assumption that youre either in or youre out. In truth, youre better off periodically resetting your portfolio according to pre-agreed limits. In this article, Morningstars Christine Benz highlights the advantages of disciplined rebalancing in managing risk. Click here: https://lnkd.in/g7ZVU2u

08.01.2022 One of the things that so many people have commented on throughout the whole COVID period is how clear the sky has been. You look up during the day and the clarity and colour difference is amazing. Clearly the reduction in economic activity has had a significant impact on pollution levels, and this has had an immediate impact. The video discussion this week is in the context of this. I was asked why we as Australian investors should take into account Sustainability issues g...iven our government’s policies towards them. You can hear my thoughts on this here. If you’d like to find out more about these issues and how we are factoring them into investing let me know and we’ll arrange a time to talk. Have a great weekend.

06.01.2022 With the situation starting to improve and the immediate concerns beginning to abate, this week we look at some of the changes weve all made to the way we live and how this may impact investment markets in the future. 04.01.2022 What are the $30,000 questions? We hear a lot about the value of big data. Everything we do and say somehow seems to be tracked by the web giants and used to improve their offerings too us essentially meaning their algorithms analyse are responses and use this to tailor the information and the marketing we see so hopefully well buy more.... Given the prevalence and prominence of this we can sometimes forget the importance of small data and the value of details. So this week we analyse how a couple of questions added up to $30,000 in savings a year for two clients.

02.01.2022 Another big week this week. Tuesday’s budget certainly contained a lot of measures designed to stimulate business investment in both human capital and business equipment. The next stage of personal income tax cuts have been brought forward and are likely to have some impact, but given they’ll be received over the course of the year they may not be noticed by many.... There was not much in the budget for self funded retirees, while for those receiving income support there was only an additional couple of $250 payments announced. You can find details of the announcements the impact you here: Business owners - https://f.datasrvr.com//Small_Business_flyer_Consultum_WL. Retirees - https://f.datasrvr.com//Consultum_WL_Retirees_flyer_FINAL. Families - https://f.datasrvr.com//47/Consultum_Families_flyer_WL.pdf In this week’s video we discuss how the links between the Queensland border closures and the volatility in investments markets, and consider how to approach this.

02.01.2022 Over the past 12 months weve been doing a lot of research to develop a new portfolio. This was given greater impetus after the summer bushfire season which had such a significant impact on all of us, and highlighted the risks to us all (even those of us in the cities) of the changing environment. The result of this is that were excited to announce the launch of our Sustainability Portfolio from today. We talk more about it in the attached video, including how it works and w...hat it is aiming to do. Well also provide more information over time. If youd like more information or have any questions, please contact us.

01.01.2022 Well, with Victoria heading back into lockdown this week I thought it was timely to share this story. I met someone this week whos business has basically stopped dead as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions.... Zero revenue, and no idea of when this might change. I was really quite worried about them. This is obviously quite stressful, with everything that theyve worked for being at risk of collapse. What they shared with me though was quite unexpected.
