25.01.2022 WHAT IS KINDNESS? Kindness is showing you care, doing some good to make life better for others. It is being thoughtful about people’s needs. Kindness is showing love and compassion to someone who is sad or needs your help. Kindness is treating yourself and others gently. It is caring about the earth and all living things. Kindness means that we recognize that others are fragile-- that we have the power to hurt or heal them--and we choose to be healers. When we are kind, we do...n't take advantage of our power or of other people's vulnerabilities. Instead, we seek to comfort, encourage and strengthen those around us. To be kind requires empathy: we must consciously attune ourselves to the life experience of another being to know what will feel good for them. Kindness builds confidence, because it lets us see others in all of their complicated, needy humanity, rather than putting them on pedestals. Kindness does not ask whether it will be repaid. Even so, our kindness often ripples through the world around us; it invites others to be kind in turn. When you plant a lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer or more water or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Thich Nhat Hanh

22.01.2022 This is a lovely pose performed by one of our Foundation Teacher Trainees. Only one week left until graduation!

21.01.2022 WHAT IS PERSISTENCE? Persistence is being purposeful and steadfast. It is sticking to something; staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear to stop you. A good example is the story of the tortoise and the hare. Even though the tortoise was slower than the hare, he won the race because he persevered he didn’t let anything stop him or distract him. He kept on going. Persistence means continuing to work toward a goal even when it takes a long time ...or things get tough. Without persistence, obstacles stop us; with persistence we learn from our failures we work with them and use them as stepping-stones instead of barriers. Persistence allows us to succeed where otherwise we might fail, because much of what matters in life requires sustained effort and repeated attempts. The greater the accomplishment we seek, the more likely this is to be true. Persistence in the service of a higher goal calls out many other virtues in us, because in order to persist we have to push ourselves beyond what is comfortable.

20.01.2022 Congratulations to all Foundation Teacher Training graduates. The last asana session was done wearing a blindfold. Great for a strong focused practice, but it's not as easy at it looks!

16.01.2022 WHAT IS JOYFULNESS? Joyfulness is being filled with happiness. It is a peaceful sense of well-being. Joy is inside us all. It comes from an appreciation for the gifts each day brings. Joy comes when we are doing what we know is right, and when we laugh and see the humor in things. Joy is the inner sense that can carry us through the hard times even when we are feeing very sad. Joyfulness is the characteristic of feeling and expressing deep happiness and enthusiasm. As an atti...tude of the spirit, it can permeate even the most sorrowful situation. When we open ourselves to joy, we let in light and laughter, strength and grace. Joy celebrates beauty and goodness, inviting us to dance without demanding or expecting anything. Sometimes joy is quiet and hidden, and sometimes it bursts out in song and movement or in the act of creation. Joy is a cup overflowing that generously shares itself with all who are near. When we are joyful, we are exposed but unafraid, unselfconsciously offering the gifts of energy, hope, and inspiration.

12.01.2022 WHAT IS LOYALTY? Loyalty is staying true to someone. It is standing up for something you believe in without wavering. It is being faithful to your family, country, school, friends or ideals when the going gets tough as well as when things are good. When you are a loyal friend, even if someone disappoints you, you still hang in there with them. Loyalty is staying committed. WHY PRACTICE IT? You cannot count on disloyal people to stay friends, because when problems happen, they go away. They often change their minds about what they believe to be important. When you practice loyalty, people know they can count on you. People who are worthy of your loyalty can trust that they will never stand alone. With loyalty, you build friendships that last forever.

08.01.2022 WHAT IS PEACEFULNESS? Peacefulness is an inner sense of calm. It comes especially in quiet moments of reflection or gratitude. It is getting very quiet and looking at things so you can understand them. Peacefulness is a way of approaching conflict with so that no one is made wrong. It is being fair to others and yourself. Peace is giving up the love of power for the power of love. With peacefulness, everyone wins. Peacefulness means nurturing harmony between individuals or gr...oups of people. Peacefulness begins internally, with a hunger for peace and a basic assumption that the other party is an ordinary person or group with ordinary wants and needs, just like us. Peacefulness grows from the humble suspicion that our own perspective is limited and that there are truths we can discover if we listen. It requires flexibility of thought, a willingness to see many sides of an issue, to imagine ourselves in the situation of another party. The greatest barrier to peacefulness is fear. Fear makes us see ourselves as victims or potential victims and blinds us to the harm that we ourselves have done or the threat we pose to others. Embracing peacefulness doesn't mean that we always avoid conflict, but we recognize its real costs and weigh those costs as if they would be borne by ourselves and our loved ones. Peacefulness is a journey as well as destination.

08.01.2022 WHAT IS RELIABILITY? Reliability means that others can depend on you to keep your commitments. Reliability is doing something that you have agreed to do in a predictable way, without forgetting or having to be reminded. When you practice reliability, you really care about doing what you said you would do. Other people can relax knowing it is in your reliable hands. Reliability means following through on our commitments, doing what we say we will do. When we are reliable, othe...rs can count on us, and we can count on ourselves. Reliability is one of the foundations of teamwork or cooperation. It allows people to work together, with each person doing what he or she does best, knowing that friends, family, or co-workers are taking care of other tasks. In a community, reliability supports individual growth and discovery. It allows us to take risks, knowing that others will be there if we fall. 'Don't make promises unless you will keep them. Not plan to keep them. Will keep them. Reliability is one of the keys to any good relationship.' Susan Ward

07.01.2022 Christmas greetings from Nicky and James.

06.01.2022 WHAT IS PATIENCE? Patience is quiet hope and trust, expecting things to turn out all right. Patience is being calm and tolerant when difficult things happen. It means showing acceptance when you or others make mistakes. Patience is doing something now so that later it will bear fruit, like planting a seed and waiting for it to grow. Patience is a commitment to the future. Patience is allowing time to run its course and allowing people, including ourselves, to work and grow at... our own pace. Patience moves our minds away from frustrations, expectations or shoulds and aligns us with reality. When we are patient, our energy is available to make good things happen. Patience must be cultivated, and yet the marvelous world around and within us offers infinite and beautiful reminders that small slow changes create change beyond imagining.

02.01.2022 WHAT IS JUSTICE? Practicing justice is being fair in everything you do. It is seeing with your own eyes and not judging something or someone by what other people tell you. Being just is standing up for your rights and the rights of other people. It is taking responsibility if you make a mistake and making amends. Justice means that every person’s rights are protected. A man who knows he has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it, is committing another mistake. Confucius
