22.01.2022 The proposed changes by Labor to stop cash refunds from imputation or franking credits is flawed, and counter productive to the Australian tax system. The rich ...and wealthy will certainly prosper, and I give my reasons below: 1. Firstly, when you compare someone who earns $40,000 income from wages or business income would have a tax bill of 4,547 at current rates, however if that same income is earned from Dividends ($28,000 gross dividend and $12,000 franking credits), the total tax bill is $12,000, leaving the share investor out of pocket by $7,453. 2. In the example above, the wage earner nets $35,453, whereas the dividend earner gets only $28,000 in the hand. 3. The dividend earner is taxed on imputation credit of $7,453 which was never received, which is unfair policy. 4. This policy does not affect someone that earns a higher income and falls in the tax bracket above 30% as the franking credit would fully cover the tax payable, and therefore this policy only hurts the lower income earners. 5. Taxpayers are being given a hard time by politicians, as they now have to change their investment strategy, and divest from dividend earning investments into other forms of income, thus leading to a mass sell off in the stock market, leading to a possible crash as of 01 July 2019. The shareholding in dividend paying blue chip companies will become a wealthy investors club, as they are not affected by this change in policy. Therefore to all those wanting to buy shares, July 2019 would be the time to grab some good shares.
