24.01.2022 Year 12 Spotlight - Mitchell Westhuizen How long have you been a member of Knox Pymble? For 13 years - Ive been a member since Kindy. My first coach was Simon OConnor and my second coach (from year 3) was Nick Dobson (both Knox old-boys). Ive been in Nicks squad ever since. My main sport is triathlon - and as many would know, the first leg of a triathlon is the swim. My swim is one of my strongest triathlon legs - thanks to Nicks coaching and the great squad that I s...wim with at Knox. I aim to swim 3-4 times a week as I also have to get in as many run, cycle and strength sessions. What are your plans for next year? University, swimming, life 2021 will be my last year as a Junior ITU triathlete (after which I move to U23). Im planning to continue competing in triathlon and study either full or part-time next year and am in the process of applying to universities in Australia (submitted ANU this week!). Whilst Id be interested in studying in the USA, triathlon is currently only recognised as an NCAA sport there for women and not for men. I might look at a European university exchange in my 2nd or 3rd year. I had my first taste of European ITU Junior racing last year at Holten in the Netherland and loved that and plan to do more racing in Europe going forward. Favourite KPSC swimming memory? I have three. The dress-up Christmas parties, the jersey-race" when I was in Prep School and Dobbo agreeing to have his hair French-braided if KPSC won the relays at State one year. What has helped you most during this strange Covid downtime? Ive kept exercising as you can see in Triathlon training day at home". More on that below. Fun fact about you others might not know? Ive recently started a YouTube channel (Mitch Westhuizen). Ive posted some videos on my triathlon set-up during this period and also interviewed some Junior and Under 23 athletes. I will be posting an interview with our very own Tyson Upton this Friday 15 May. Look out for it. On my channel you will also be able to see on my Triathlon training day at home mentioned above. Best of luck for the future, Mitch! #classof2020
