25.01.2022 Update on Mabel and her joey
25.01.2022 Yesterday, today and tomorrow time line at 53 Cowley St. Ormiston. Tomorrow's pic was yesterday at Ivory Lane and the past is the best predictor for the future.
23.01.2022 Thank you Principal Tucker for taking the time to "brighten my day" with the photos and video of our precious koala. Last Thursday we discussed a project we're ...working on after I'd had a really rough day with an issue . Late that afternoon she sent me an email saying "Look what we saw today, I just filmed the koala walking between trees, hope this brightens your day" and it certainly did. I'm trying to track koalas with KAG and they were excited to record this spotting with photo's. I am so excited about our project because this is a great school with strong ethics and morals and Principal Tucker is a strong leader many of us look up and aspire to. See more
23.01.2022 2016, after the loss of the Ormiston koala link I wrote a big letter to Richard Branson at The Battleship Building England asking for his advice how we could sa...ve our koalas in Redlands from developers. I did not get a reply so I wrote another, and then another until I got an email inviting me to the opening of the koala research program at Makepeace Island in Noosa. I had a talk with Brett Godfrey, co-founder of Virgin and half owner of Makepeace. His advice to me was find yourself a business leader to be a champion in Redlands. I got on the boat leaving 2 of our Koala Bay mascots on the island to give me luck. I have not had much luck with finding a business leader but I now think I am meant to be that person. Maybe the luck will be getting into Council because I will never give up protecting our koalas and for the people that say you're wasting your time, they've all gone, I just say "I do not listen to defeatist statements." 22.01.2022 From small things, big things grow! This photo was just taken in Glover Dr Alexander Hills by my sister's old neighbours. Alison and Malcom planted this Tallowood as a sapling and it has rewarded them.
21.01.2022 Can you imagine the work involved keeping this little one alive? Mind boggling
20.01.2022 Put the sound on for this video because there's Beautiful noises for Baby Norris when he's reunited with his Mum.
19.01.2022 Who doesn't love a koala? We know the USA love them. Our Redland T shirts arrived in Florida yesterday and they look fabulous
18.01.2022 A carer looking after a dehydrated koala shocked to find she was caring for two. Awwww.

18.01.2022 Last year, I remember getting on the Cleveland train to Qld Parliament to deliver our petition for a Koala Protection Act in Qld that we had been working together with EDO for over 6 months. From this koala mapping was drafted. Change always starts from somewhere.
18.01.2022 'Writing a speech is not the same as writing an essay' was the opening speech to Youth of the Year contestants representing Redlands, judged by our Forum Commun...icators panel Pam Tranter Elaine West and Warren Hull. Representing Cleveland SH was Olivia, Jack and Ben and Adrian from Alex Hills SH. Every year Lion's Ken Wilcox does a perfect MC pointing out Kevin Rudd and Peter Beattie had been Youth of the Year winners. Cleveland High history, english and baccelaureate teacher Athena Humphries was proud to see Olivia as overall winner. Athena is wearing the koala print dress so we had a chat about a hospital in Redlands as well as the int'l recognised baccelaureate training so I will be following this up as a marketing project through the school with such high talent. Impromptu questions were Are brands names important and... How can we get the message across not to use mobile phones while driving? Students had 1 minute to give their 3 minute answer. Prepared speeches were Technology is good. The real reason Gough Whitlam was sacked. Democracy & political interference. Being unbiased is a subconcious decision. See more
16.01.2022 Great video. Since NRMA have thrown their hat in the ring for koala protection and preservation, many others have signed up for sponsorship.
16.01.2022 Congratulations to Susannah Keogh from conservation group Friends of the Koala in Northern Rivers has achieved a green light for a KOALA HOSPITAL. I met Susannah 2017 at Currumbin when I was there discussing koala vet services. She had brought little Flip in with a broken arm. I'm pleased she managed to drive the necessity through to the community, Council and governments. It's never too late to act.
15.01.2022 From Mr Gravatt Capalaba Rd. Nice work.
14.01.2022 One tough koala that got away from a dog attack, well two actually.
14.01.2022 Together we are strong, together we are powerful.
13.01.2022 Meet Beatrice a very sick girl who was found sitting on the ground in Morayfield. Beatrice shares a very sad but important message: A koala sitting on the grou...nd is NOT okay and needs to be reported immediately. 0401 080 333 A koala should only be on the ground when travelling from tree to tree.. If a koala is sitting, hunching or sleeping on the ground they are in need of urgent medical attention.
12.01.2022 Of all the photographs taken by Redlands wildlife photographer Chris Walker of our koalas, this is my favourite. Chris' post clearly details what the Koala Action Group petition is asking for...
12.01.2022 So far 970 have registered their interest in the hospital open day. This is how you run a wildlife hospital as a business, not a charity. This is tourism, this is corporate advertising, it's employment, it's good for the community and this is just one event of many they hold every year. We can do this in Redlands and we should. I will be the councillor to drive this because I have been working this project since July 2017. Adelia Berridge Div 9 Redlands
12.01.2022 KOALAS CROSS HERE ....will read the sign being erected on Macquarrie St Capalaba after long time resident John reported he had a mum and bub resting in his fron...t yard after climbing over his fence. Then it went up one of his large gums in his 600m yard. He phoned me Sunday with the news, knowing that this is a very important sighting. Council and KAG have logged this sighting. The joey is getting ready to leave mum so I have asked some residents to have eyes open including Silkwood St. This is very exciting because this area used to bring a bus load from Toowoomba for koala and platypus watching retired Cr Toni Bowler told me last year. We can only live in hope. What else do you do in the rain but put on a coat and go out looking for koalas. Back today in the sun but no sign of them...yet. See more

11.01.2022 We've lost well over 80% of our koalas in Redlands, most in the past decade.
11.01.2022 (Please share) Koala and other beautiful wildlife in Macarthur find themselves in dangerous location’s due to habitat destruction. So if you see displaced, si...ck or injured Koala's or any other unique wildlife please call Sydney Wildlife (Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Services) they will send out a fully trained volunteer to attend the rescue and give the help the native wildlife needs. Sydney Wildlife Rescue is a 100% volunteer base & we do it for the love of the animals. We always assess the situation before any animal is removed & we do not use any animals for any tracking programs or any other programs. Our native wildlife are wild animals & the less interaction the better as they can be easily stressed and stress can cause them death. Sydney Wildlife Rescue are always great for giving info if needed as well. See more

10.01.2022 Such a tragedy. We're completely out of wiggle room to lose more koalas.
10.01.2022 Ask anyone who has been working for koala preservation in Redlands, especially the last 6 years, how inspiring this young student is, and they will tell you, Very Inspiring. I am inspired by your age and your drive. Rohan's mum gave me permission to post Rohan's digital drawings on our Koala Bay site. State Gov report (known as Koala Crunch) of 2014 said we had lost around 80% of our koalas in SEQ. It will be higher now. We can see the impact of a fire here has the ability to threaten them to almost extinction in the wild. Gold Star Rohan and a limited edition Koala Bay T Shirt made in Redlands will be sent to you this coming week as you are a voice for our koalas.
10.01.2022 A healthy looking koala male with ear tag 3243 (his name is Blake) was in Henry Ziegenfusz Park today - in the very same tree where Mabel and Pixel were release...d yesterday afternoon. We could not see Mabel and Pixel in the park so assume that Mabel (carrying Pixel) moved during the night to one of her hiding places nearby. Please slow down and watch out for koalas when driving along Fitzroy Street past this Park. 06.01.2022 Please consider taking some time this week to send a submission to the draft Koala Conservation Strategy [email protected] with the closing date o...n Friday January 31st. The main concerns for KAG and others are outlined below and key points that can be copied into your submission are attached. Please feel free to add your own thoughts as there is no right or wrong comments. Community groups and individuals from across Qld share our concerns that the State Government's draft Koala Conservation Strategy is seriously flawed and deficient in its understanding of koala ecology. Urban koalas have been left completely unprotected as they appear to be in the too-hard basket and the notion that they should be moved to safer bushland areas is fraught with danger as demonstrated with the catastrophic fires occurring across Australia. The koala mapping intended to protect habitat needs to be increased (and include movement corridors), not decreased. Coastal areas in the Redlands (including Toondah Harbour precinct) where koala sightings are commonplace and known to have breeding koalas must also be given protection. Strong legislation must be put in place to prevent loopholes being used to continue the 'business as usual' clearing of koala habitat which has been allowed to occur in the past and has led to the continuing decline of koalas. I wish to submit the following comments to the Draft South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2019-2024 (KCS): The KCS appears to be a seriously flawed document and it is difficult to see how it can slow the catastrophic decline of koalas in SEQ. To rely on so-called safe bushland areas to save the SEQ koala population is naïve and ill-informed and changes to legislation to relocate koalas from urban areas is not the answer, especially given the danger from fires in large bushland areas. The KCS is deficient in its understanding of koala ecology and how koalas use habitat at a landscape scale. This is demonstrated with the draft koala habitat mapping failing to protect areas and movement corridors where many of our koalas are living right now as evidenced by koala sightings recorded in the Atlas of Living Australia. Land removed from the Government’s existing mapping of Koala Habitat ahead of the draft strategy being released (including at Shoreline and south west Victoria Point) should be reinstated. The KCS mapping has largely removed protection along the coastal areas which is likely to become critical habitat with Climate Change making western areas less viable for koalas. Areas of Redlands mapped previously as being of State Environmental Significance should be included as Koala Habitat, especially if ground-truthing evidence shows koala activity. The proposal to let property owners have automatic rights to clear up to 500 m2 in Koala Habitat areas should be replaced with an impact assessment process. The exemption allowing firebreaks to be developed and maintained in Koala Habitat areas is supported, provided that there are rules to prevent abuse. It is imperative that strong planning laws to protect Koala Habitat are implemented as previous legislation has failed to protect koalas and their habitat due to ‘loop holes’ and lack of enforcement. The targets to reduce koala mortality are too low and must be increased especially in areas such as the Redlands where populations have declined by at least 80%. A moratorium on clearing koala trees in Koala Priority Areas should be implemented (with effective sanctions) until the Strategy and Koala Habitat mapping are finalised. The use of financial offsets as a mechanism for property owners and developers to buy the right to destroy koala habitat is unacceptable. Analysis of overall gain/loss of koala habitat in south east Queensland should recognize that areas close to the coast such as the Redlands can sustain more koalas per hectare than other areas further west where it’s hotter and drier. Public consultation periods for Koala Habitat mapping (to 22 December 2019) and the draft Strategy (to 31 January 2020) are inadequate both periods should be extended. The Government should undertake extensive community consultation about its strategy and mapping in Redland City, including drop in sessions and speaking at a public meeting. Yours sincerely, Name and address
06.01.2022 What a beautiful result.
06.01.2022 Baby koalas have to learn as much as they can from their mothers, in about six months. They have to learn how to choose the right tree, how to avoid trespassing... on the homes of other wild koalas, how to stay safe from predators, how to eat leaves and climb trees. Ngardang is an excellent breeding female and an amazing mom - she has four joeys herself. She teaches them everything they need to know to survive by themselves once they become independent. Hanging on is a skill joey will need to learn, after all, their whole life they will be hanging on to trees. Watch this video of the patient & considerate Ngardang trying to choose a route that is easy for her tiny backpack, Lakorra. https://buff.ly/2LXSjLD
04.01.2022 It appears this is the new normal!
04.01.2022 Thank you to all who have written, messaged or phoned me regarding this disaster. I believe I have now replied to everyone. Of course this is wrong on every level. I don't know what we have learnt in the past 5 years so my responses have not been helpful. As a person who fought relentlessly to save Ivory Lane linkage, fought for an Act for koala protection, given talks at UQ students and been a strong voice in Council I'm more than appalled. I'm deeply ashamed. Adelia Berridge
01.01.2022 We've mentioned in the last post that koalas change trees every day. But do you know why? . One of the main reasons is to patrol their territory and maintain co...ntact with their social group. This is particularly important for dominant males. In the picture, male koala Lluvia is preparing to mark a tree by rubbing his scent gland on it. . Male koalas will mark their home range with their scent to communicate with other koalas. It's a way of attracting females and discouraging other males. It can even say they are willing to fight for this patch. https://buff.ly/36tmLo0 See more

14.12.2021 Every Friday is my Post A Koala Day because we forget how Australian they are. They are our biggest tourism draw and 80% of overseas travellers who were surveye...d in Cairns 3 years ago said they came to see the koala. (Cairns doesn't have koalas, we do). Every week I'm asked, who doesn't love a koala? I can't answer that. #saveredlandskoalas In 2015, the same year this photo taken supporters of San Diego Zoo contacted me when we were fighting to save a small koala linkage in Ivory Lane Ormiston. We raised 34,000 signatures on a petition which is how San Diego Zoo connected with me. So many memories. #nevergiveup See more

08.10.2021 Friday is all things koalas day because who doesn't love a koala? Currumbin have proved they do and raised $20k last Saturday doing a beach walk. People came fr...om across Brisbane and NSW to purchase koala ears. Simple as that, not complicated, just passion and eco tourism. Can we do this? Yes we can. We badly need a koala care unit and I am working on this. Hadn't thought of breaking the world record for koala ears though. Rather brilliant. See more

'The HEART of the Arts' i...s true to the words by Coolnwynpin School which is why I approached them in February to champion an art project for #wildkoaladay. I asked Koala Action Group to become involved with providing information and education as to why we have a national wild koala day, and once again, the centre management at Capalaba Park Shopping Centre were happy to allow their work to be displayed outside Target. The display is there until Wednesday. Take a bow kids for putting your 's into this one. www.wildkoaladay.com See more
