20.01.2022 This post is most relevant to NSW followers, but is of concern to all of us considering the significant loss of koala habitat and koalas in the NSW bushfires. This is about a Bill going before the NSW Upper House next week- see overview below from Bangalow Koalas and a link to EDO's submission. (The Bill has was introduced following a well-publicised dispute within the NSW coalition which many will recall) Let's hope the Bill does not pass as NSW koalas need strong protections after the devastating losses in the bushfires. https://www.edo.org.au/.../201019-LLS-Amendment...

20.01.2022 It's wonderful when visitors to our region get to share seeing a koala in the wild! Amamoor Lodge in our beautiful Mary Valley is one of those places where this can and does happen Wonder if this is the koala that often crosses Kandanga-Amamoor Rd. outside the Lodge, sometimes stopping to lick early morning dew off the white painted line! (We have put up a koala road sign!) Nearly some residents have planted hundreds of koala food trees to help ensure the future of koalas in their area #maryvalley #amamoor #gympiekoala #lovegympie

18.01.2022 It's great to see more Gympie region 'citizen-scientists' using WILDWATCH GYMPIE to record sightings of threatened species and vehicle strikes on native animals October showed the highest number of koala sighting reports so far this year! It gives a great insight into where koala populatinos remain and how they are (eg joeys shows breeding is happening) and it also shows impacts eg numbers of disease, road strikes, dog attacks etc. If you are in Gympie Region we urge you to report your koala sightings! Thank-you.

17.01.2022 Its FRIDAY already, so lucky to see this FRIDAY FRIEND today Wait for it! A koala sighting in Trout Rd, The Dawn! (8 kms from Gympie towards the Mary Valley) The excited residents were alerted to it by a noisy mob of cockatoos harrassing the poor koala-luckily the birds moved on. The last reported sighting in The Dawn was November 2 years ago !( a koala was rescued after some big storms but she was sick and did not make it). The Dawn is a now a rural residential area, ...with some good habitat still in many parts-for this beautiful female the biggest dangers will be dogs and vehicles. As she was roadside we have up a sign, and the lovely residents are alerting the local community We hope this means there are other koalas there-please report all sightings on WILDWATCH GYMPIE so we have data on where koalas persist in our region and how they are going. #gympiekoala

13.01.2022 We are excited to see another Koala Interpretive sign go up in our Gympie region! This one was installed for our group this week by Gympie Regional Council at the Imbil end of the Mary Valley Rail Trail. The Rail Trail uses part of the former historical Mary Valley branch line, covering 4.7 kms between Imbil and Brooloo. Koalas have been sighted along the trail and on neighbouring properties so this is a great spot for a sign to offer the public educational and interesting information on this precious species. 13.01.2022 FRIDAY FRIENDS It's always wonderful to see mother koalas and their joeys! Importantly it tells us that in that district breeding is occurring to keep the koala population going The residents only moved to Kandanga in the past year and couldn't be happier to be seeing koalas in the wild as they potter in the garden This young one will be getting quite independent and mum likely to breed very soon. 10.01.2022 We only have until COB tomorrow to let the Senate know how we feel on this issue If you have been following the Review of the Federal EPBC Act, you will know that the Government has an Amendment Bill before the Senate, prior to the release of the final report of the independent statutory review of the EPBC Act! Many people are concerned the Amendment bill to 'streamline' processes will weaken nature laws. The Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee has to report their finding to the Senate on 27 November. If this is something you are concerned about, here are the relevant links

03.01.2022 FRIDAY FRIEND time This is 'Snowdrop' a young male koala very happy to come home yesterday to his trees on a Wolvi property, from where he was rescued in early October. He had chlamydia (residents noticed he had a very stained bottom). Thanks to the wonderful team at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, he is home and healthy-look out girls! He still has some left over staining on his bottom that will lessen over time, but he is now disease-free. He zoomed up his tree wit...hout a backward glance for us to get a great photo of him! All the best beautiful boy Thanks to 'Noosa Region Koala Rescue Team-Wildcare Australia' volunteers for transporting him to and from the wildlife Hospital at Beerwah. 02.01.2022 For locals in the Gympie/Widgee area: are you free this Friday am? We have a koala habitat tree planting in Widgee and could use some more helping hands. It's a 'community' tree planting in a beautiful spot along the creek, to help the Widgee koala population, AND it also an opportunity for landholders to learn from bush regenerator Rick. He is a wealth of info. that he is always keen to share, and had great knowledge of koala tree use. Send us a text, call, or email if coming.
