23.01.2022 We're excited to release MFD Benita after her extensive rehabilitation. Benita presented with glaucoma so advanced that we had to remove her eye before it ruptured. After close observation in rehab, we are confident that she will manage well back in the wild, as we have seen so many healthy one-eyed koalas in the past. #koalahospital #portmacquariekoalahospital #portvet

22.01.2022 ‘Guulagu’ means ‘for koalas’. Guulagu Koala Custodians is a group of community members from the Port Macquarie area with a focus on social advocacy for koala conservation. Guulagu are seeking new participants. 22.01.2022 Oh yeah...one of those days. And while Guyra Allen might look a bit tubby, koalas carry very little fat. Inside that round tummy are all important organs, including an enormous digestive system to break down those tough leaves to extract nutriment. #koalasleeping #portmacquariekoalahospital #koalahospital #koalaeating

22.01.2022 Out of the basket to freedom! Laurieton Bailey was released into beautiful habitat away from the busy bridge on which he was found. #wildkoalas #koalarelease #portmacquariekoalahospital #koalahospital

22.01.2022 Lighthouse Road Lucky fell from a tree, and some may say that he is luck-free. He was admitted to Hospital where he'll receive care, and a speedy release for this koala bear....(oops, NOT a bear!).

22.01.2022 Little Owen Paul is resting easy now, before his release. Paul was successfully treatment for Clamydia infection and kidney issues. He is being returned to his patch of paradise today! Great news! #portmacquariekoalahospital #koalahospital #backtothewild

21.01.2022 Good morning Myrtle! Always eager to meet new visitors. Please BOOK ONLINE before arriving at the Hospital.

21.01.2022 Kadina Mia and her joey were admitted to Koala Hospital for observation after a harrowing day. They had a small fall from a tree, negotiated traffic on a high risk road and were rescued from atop a fence bordering yards with dogs. We'll return them to a more relaxing location close by.

20.01.2022 Koalas on private land! We are encouraging landholders with potential koala habitat anywhere in north-east NSW to join a research program by DPI that is assessing koala occurrence on private land. Private land is considered important for koala conservation, but there is little direct information about what kinds of properties are more likely to support koalas. Researchers don’t need to enter your property, they will post sophisticated, but easy to use mini-recorders (audiomoths) for you to set on your property for about a week. The recorders are then returned to DPI for analysis. Surveys must be completed before xmas, so if interested act now and contact [email protected]. Thank you for your support of koalas!

11.01.2022 Koalas DO NOT GET DRUNK on Eucalyptus leaves. The eucalypt leaf is very low in viable nutrients. Koalas have a slightly lower body temperature, and consequently a lower metabolic rate than most other mammals, which reduces the amount of energy expended per day. By sleeping 18-20 hours each day they conserve energy, and their waking hours are used to seek new trees for food and shelter, and to search for mates during the breeding season.

11.01.2022 Mmmm, nom nom nom. Byabarra Jones enjoying those peppermint gum leaves. You can help us feed Jonesy by sponsoring him with an adoption. 10.01.2022 This is NAIDOC Week, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. At the Koala Hospital we acknowledge the Birpai people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. @naidoc

10.01.2022 This week is National Recycling Week! Artworks by students from local schools have been used to decorate our recycling bins, which were donated by J.R. Richards. These bins have been placed at the Koala Hospital for visitors to deposit eligible containers. New signage in multiple languages has also been erected for visitors to understand how to use bins correctly. All containers will be deposited at a local reverse vending machine to earn the 10c refund for use by the Koala Hospital.

09.01.2022 Barb knows that when joeys come in for the simple task of weighing in, it's usually anything but simple. #homecare #koalajoey #koalahospital #portmacquariekoalahospital

09.01.2022 We had a visitor today, eating our patients' leaves. This phasmid is a Titan Stick Insect, Acrophylla titan. They are one of Australia's longest insects, and this one is over 20cm long! They're found in forests sharing the diet of our koalas.

07.01.2022 Belgrave Katherine wasn't sure whether to leave or go back into the bag when we released her today! #wildkoalarelease #backtothewild #

07.01.2022 LINR Baz was rescued ONE YEAR ago from one of the local bushfires. He was a juvenile with burnt hands and feet, and singed fur over 90% of his little body. He spent a long time in home care, where he was hand fed, leaf by leaf. His body has recovered well and he is becoming a good sized young adult. His claws aren't growing back properly though, which happens with damage to the base of the claw/nail bed. This limits Baz's ability to climb and secure himself in trees, which reduces his survivability in the wild. Baz is still under observation in a large free yard at Koala Hospital.

06.01.2022 Inverell Tom will be returning to his Goonoowigall country home now that his broken arm has healed. The locals (pictured) are making sure he knows which way to go! Another great success story for a young koala! Port Macquarie Koala Hospital takes in koalas from all over NSW from organisations and carers who find koalas which need specialised treatment. #portmacquariekoalahospital #koalahospital #wildkoalas

06.01.2022 After subduing a bushfire at his first attempted release, Forestry Corporation NSW were able to release KSF Beau back into his home range. KSF Beau is one of a number of koalas the Koala Hospital, NSW Department Primary Industries and Forestry Corporation are fitting with radio collars and tracking their movements in both previously logged and unlogged forests to determinine overall health, reproductive status, choice of trees and movements of the koala populations that live in State Forests. For the past couple of days, they have tracked him moving around nicely through his koala food trees. If you look hard you can see the radio collar he is wearing. #forestrycorporationofnsw #koalahospital #portmacquariekoalahospital

05.01.2022 We love seeing these beautiful, healthy joeys around town. It's mum is previous patient Opal Page, who this time has conjunctivitis in both eyes. Once treated, Page will go back out to release her joey. #wildkoala #koalajoey #mumnbub #portmacquariekoalahospital

05.01.2022 Koala Hospital now owns the land on which we stand! NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian (pictured with our MP Leslie Williams) announced that this land of high cultural significance would be transfered to us from NPWS. The Premier said this is a real gesture to demonstrate the trust and faith that the government have in the Koala Hospital. Thank you so much, and to the people of NSW for your ongoing support. #portmacquariekoalahospital #koalahospital #nswgovernment #lesliewilliams #npws

04.01.2022 Filming with animals...

04.01.2022 Terrific news! Today was the official launch of the Cowarra State Forest Tourism precinct. Now a step closer to reality with the release of an exciting masterplan. The precinct will become an important facility for the rehabilitation and breeding of wild koalas, and will showcase local Birpai culture and be an important venture for employment and training for local Aboriginal people. A Wildnets treetops experience and elevated walks are planned through the canopy, allowing visitors to view koalas in their natural environment. Visitors will learn the importance of living sustainably to reduce their carbon footprint, and how to contribute to minimise the effects of climate change. Koala Conservation Australia will build the first ever conservation breeding facility for wild koalas at the site.

04.01.2022 Every Koala has its story. This story of Tom, a koala we rehabilitated after a broken arm, is a story of love, tragedy, survival and cohesion of community and cultures. Please take the 7 minutes out of your busy day for this. Tom Danger Mouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch
