25.01.2022 Fun Fact #6! Eucalyptus leaves are poisonous to almost every other animal but koalas have a long digestive organ called a caecum which contains millions of bacteria that allows them to break down the fibrous leaves unharmed. Koalas survive on this low energy diet of eucalyptus leaves by sleeping a lot and conserving energy wherever possible

25.01.2022 A huge thank you to Joey, Mattie & Hayden who visited us today to deliver much needed goods from the ARC Hub in Sale for our shelter & also parrot boxes for the islands feathered friends. Your support is so greatly appreciated.

25.01.2022 Koalas of Raymond Island had WIN NEWS join us today at the Shelter to do a story on our need for donations and support to build our treatment room, enclosures and care for our koalas. If you would like to support us you can buy a koala mask through our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/koalasofraymondisland/ Or donate to: Koalas of Raymond Island Inc. 24.01.2022 A very different rescue! The story of NEMO. We were called to the waterfront as a resident had seen a koala hanging on to a mooring pole at the end of a jetty. He’d tried grabbing the koala from his boat but the koala avoided him so he called KORI. Carer Carole got to the scene to hear a large splash and to see the koala in the water. The koala managed to cling to one of the mooring ropes and eventually climb a mooring pole. Carole climbed onto the back of a boat and tried to... reach it but it was impossible, she noticed a boat going past and yelled out to the people for help. She climbed onboard, and after help from a couple of the people, managed to tackle the very active koala and get it on the boat. There was improvised rescue equipment....blankets & fishing nets etc but it was a successful rescue. The koala was given the name NEMO because he obviously liked to go for a swim..... .....or not. Back to the shelter, dried off, checked for a microchip, weighed and checked for injuries but NEMO seemed to be fine. We kept NEMO for a few days to let him rest, eat up & to make sure he hadn’t inhaled water into his lungs. He was the most active koala we’ve ever had leaping from gunyah to gunyah every time anyone entered the cage. NEMO was taken back to a big red gum near where he was found.....let’s hope he’s learnt his lesson not to climb on boats! A huge thanks from Carole & KORI to those people that helped with the rescue. If you would like to help us care for our Raymond Island koalas please donate to: Koalas of Raymond Island Inc BSB: 633 000 Account: 172 969 198 See more

24.01.2022 An update on the not so Mighty QUINN. Sadly although Quinn seems to be using his injured leg quite well, walking around the enclosure & climbing the gunyahs he’s not eating enough and is losing weight. Over the last week we’ve all been trying everything we can to stimulate his appetite and get food into Quinn....picking browse from his area & trying to give him the best leaf we can. We’ve been pureeing leaf, mixing it with special formula & feeding it to him, a very labour... intensive process. He’s accepted our Oxbow/Biolac smoothies & even baby puréed pumpkin and sweet corn recommended by the wonderful vets at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, as well as probiotics to put good bacteria back in his gut and to keep him alive. The worst was the poo smoothies made from Harlow & Alby’s scat also trying to put back good bacteria....they say you have to be cruel to be kind! As a last resort Quinn was taken on a 4 hour road trip to Healesville Sanctuary Hospital yesterday where he will have complete blood tests (very expensive if we were paying) more X-rays, tests and further investigation into why he continues to lose weight. We’ve fought so hard to make Quinn well again and we pray that Quinn will survive & come back to us to live out his life on the Island. If you’d like to donate towards Quinn’s vet bills & care our bank details are: Koalas of Raymond Island Inc BSB: 633 000 Account: 173 969 198 Or gofundme. https://www.gofundme.com/f/264ro1jk5c

24.01.2022 Tonight I’m feeling frustrated & angry after yet another dog attack this morning on a big, healthy male koala. We need more responsible dog owners on Raymond Island & this is why dogs should always be on a lead when being walked or contained on their owners property! I was called to a rescue this morning and noticed straight away that the koala had a significant injury on his back which was bleeding, fresh blood. After taking him back to the KORI Shelter for assessment it w...as decided he needed to be looked at by a vet. The vet & I were hopeful that the wound could be stitched and that he would be sent home this evening but when the vet had cleaned the wound under anaesthetic it was discovered that he had at least 2 broken ribs, shredded tissue & muscle and possible damage to his chest cavity. The decision was made to euthanise him. At least he is out of pain. Unfortunately for us we still have to pay the vet bill for the consultation, anaesthetic, euthanasia etc. and that is why we are always raising funds & asking for donations so that we can give the Koalas of Raymond Island the best possible care. 24.01.2022 Raymond Island residents and holidayers, please take note and call us at KORI on 0438 588642 or 0419 152 446 if you see a koala on the ground for a period of time or if it is in distress. Please leave out containers of water for our wildlife on hot days.

24.01.2022 EDDY is our newest patient at KORI. He was found by a lovely local resident, Inge. She spotted him lying flat on the ground early one morning. We got the call to rescue him at 8.34am and within 10-15 minutes he was picked up and back at the shelter. Hes a young male and was very cold and lethargic & skinny....starvation. Inge also has a very large male on her property & we suspect hes not allowing Eddy to feed. We set about warming Eddy up with heat pads & trying to get fl...uid into him. Then it was off to the vets where he was assessed as very dehydrated & put on an IV drip. We continue to look after Eddy giving him formula feeds & leaf to build him up again. Its going to be a slow process but were hopeful he can recover. A huge thanks to Inge for finding Eddy and calling us. 23.01.2022 Introducing our latest boy in care, JESSE, named after Jesse Martin who kindly laid our concrete slabs, not charging for labour. Koala Jesse was spotted along a walking track yesterday by 2 people, both noticing a nasty wound on his shoulder. We managed to get Jesse out of the tree he was in and took him back to the KORI Shelter for examination. The wound appeared to be healing nicely but we had the Vet check him out this morning and gave him a clean bill of health. At over ...12kg Jesse is a big strong boy, great body condition, but very gentle. We will observe Jesse over the next couple of days to make sure he’s climbing & eating well but we expect he will be released soon after. To donate for Jesse’s care: Koalas of Raymond Island (Bendigo Bank) BSB: 633 000 Account: 172 969 198 See more

23.01.2022 A huge thank you to CHRIS GRIGG of Nyora, one of the winners of this weeks SHOP LOCAL CAMPAIGN run by Visit Paynesville, who kindly donated her $100 prize to KORI. So generous, thank you Chris. Thank you to Paynesville Business & Tourism Association for making this possible.

22.01.2022 It was a very sad day for us all at KORI today when our dog attack victim BLOSSOM suddenly crashed due to complications from the attack. We knew she’d had a rough time losing her baby & suffering injuries from the 2 dogs who had attacked her but she had appeared to be recovering. We thought her wounds had healed, she was active and eating but unfortunately deteriorated rapidly this morning. The kindest thing we could do was have her put to sleep. RIP Blossom.

21.01.2022 It was a very hot day today....in the 40’s ....we had decided yesterday that Cath would look after the joeys (babies) in her house with the air conditioning on all day. After a couple of scuffles & a near escape the joeys (babies) settled in for a snoozy afternoon. Poor Albi & Harlow, the bigger boys at the shelter, have been given water throughout the day and the whole cage, including them have been misted with water. We hope the cool change arrives tonight. A reminder to everyone on hot days...please, please put out extra water for animals, birds & little critters.

21.01.2022 I think young Alby is going to miss Blossom. She was very patient with him.

19.01.2022 Some happy news from Raymond Island....a very talented Koala Mum and her not so small baby joey walking along a paling fence! Raymond Island has lots of healthy koalas & bubs at the moment. Thanks to a local, Ian Richardson, for sharing his video with us.

18.01.2022 I don’t think Jesse will be with us long, he seems pretty fit & well to us especially when we released him into the pre-release pen.

18.01.2022 Charlie was in no hurry to pick a gum to climb! He took his time marking a couple of trees with the scent gland on his chest. Only the male koalas have this scent gland and its sometimes helpful for us to identify males from females at a distance.

18.01.2022 A huge thank you to Paynesville & District Community Bank for their generous grant which helped fund the materials for our new enclosures at Koalas of Raymond Island. These enclosures have had a number of injured koalas in care and and we plan to move our joeys Max, Harlow and our sub adult Alby into their own section in the next few weeks.

18.01.2022 Young Alby is changing all the time, hes using his sense of smell and learning how to climb around the enclosure.

18.01.2022 Great news from Mallacoota and to see 4 of the evacuated, injured koalas released back into the wild. Great job Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter.

17.01.2022 Sadly today we lost a beautiful, big, healthy male to another dog attack. His wounds were too horrific to show, but we don’t apologise for showing this sad photo. Koalas are more active at this time of year, males are looking for the females and defending territory from other males. Mothers with babies are slower moving about with a joey on their back. We ask everyone to be aware that koalas are often on the ground moving to other trees in the early morning and again at dusk, often moving through our backyards. Please just be aware of where your dogs are at these times of day, especially if you know there is a koala in a tree in your yard. A big thank you to Jade Hammer of Main Street Vet who took our call at 6.30am on a Sunday morning and was available to take away the pain for this beautiful koala.

16.01.2022 We’re looking forward to seeing locals & visitors at our KORI Easter Fundraiser. Come along and show your support.

16.01.2022 Alby saying hello today.

16.01.2022 This time last year we had the horrific bushfires near us in East Gippsland and we were lucky enough to tell our story on ABC RADIO with Richelle Hunt & Warwick Long. Back in late December 2019 our Shelley Robinson was asked to care for 7 Raymond Island koalas who had to be evacuated back to the island because the mainland shelter where they had been was surrounded by bushfires. Shelley got together a group of friends, got permission to clean up & use an old shelter enclosu...re and moved the koalas in that night by torchlight. And so it began... The group looked after the koalas through that terrible Summer until mid March when they were taken back to the mainland and Covid-19 was taking hold. Members of that group became Koalas of Raymond Island Inc (KORI), 4 becoming registered Wildlife Carers under Shelley who had many years of experience with previous shelters and created their own Koala Shelter on Raymond Island caring for the welfare of our island wildlife. Shelley has been the driving force behind KORI. See more

16.01.2022 EDNA being released back to her home on the Koala Trail, by Shelley, where she’d lived for at least 13 years. Note: the orange paint is so we can easily recognise koalas after release. It does wash off.

15.01.2022 A wonderful delivery of cuddly toys arrived this week, generously donated by Cindy Curran for our koala joeys. Shelley was very excited to show them to little Max who was most intrigued with the owls nose. KORI is so grateful to the support and donations being given to help us care for our koalas. THANK YOU.

15.01.2022 HARLOW & ALBI taking togetherness too far! Poor HARLOW had ALBI sitting on him while he was sleeping. Such cute noises

15.01.2022 Moments like these when we see Mavis and her joey Alby reunited and close together make your heart melt and the work to get them to this stage soooo worth it.

15.01.2022 Shelley did an interview with ABC this morning regarding the dog attacks we’ve had in recent days. The pictured koala had horrific injuries and sadly had to be euthanised after climbing a dog pen, Keanu, who was also rescued at the weekend and is in care at KORI, has bites to his hand from a dog attack on a private property. His hand is very swollen but he’s on antibiotics, pain relief & his wounds are being dressed daily and he’s hopefully on the mend. Fingers crossed. While walking across the road at night Blossom & her back baby were attacked by 2 dogs on the loose. The baby was killed during the attack and sadly Blossom, after surviving her wounds for over a month, unexpectedly succumbed to neurological complications caused by the dog attack.

14.01.2022 NEMO’S release....he was happy to be home.

14.01.2022 This is a story about a dear old lady we called EDNA. We rescued Edna from the Koala Trail when she was found on the ground confused & trying to climb a resident’s legs. After an examination we realised Edna was in fairly good physical condition but that she had difficulty with her sight. She was put out in the enclosure, separate to the babies, and she devoured the browse we gave her, she was an eating machine! We discovered through DEWLP that she was first brought in for ...a health check in 2010 with a pouch young at the time. She came in through the health check program several more times over the years, she was a survivor in the busiest place on the island, the Koala Trail. We estimated her age to be about 13 years (maybe more) which is very old for a koala on Raymond Island. As it is holiday time here and over Christmas & New Year the Koala Trail is very busy with visitors we gave Edna respite at the shelter for a couple of weeks. Last week we decided we’d try and put her back where she’d come from but sadly she only lasted a day before being found wandering on the ground again. She was at risk from dogs & foxes. We knew we had to make a very hard decision about poor Edna because of her poor sight but we continued to feed her over the weekend and she seemed to be happy & settled with us. Sadly Edna’s time was up, she was found on the floor of her enclosure this morning and it saved us making that hard decision. RIP Edna See more

14.01.2022 We were blessed with great weather last Saturday for the pour of our 2 new slabs for a Treatment/Examination Room & a new Koala Enclosure. A huge thanks goes to Jesse Martin & Damian from Jesse Martin Concreting for donating their precious time to lay the slabs for us with the help of Alan, Eric, Graham & Franz who did the labouring. Also to Dahlsens Bairnsdale for donating the reo. The girls supplied the morning tea. Were really excited about having an Treatment/Examinat...ion Room so we can give the property owners back their garden shed & set ourselves up properly to treat our koalas. 14.01.2022 Thank you to all those who supported our Easter Fundraiser yesterday, Easter Saturday, it was a very successful day. The weather was beautiful, warm & sunny. Hundreds of raffle tickets sold, hundreds of sausages sold (we had to dash and buy more) nearly all of the biscuits made by the local ladies were sold & our charity bags & second hand books sold very well & the tin rattle was also successful. A very special huge THANK YOU to all our local volunteers & families who worke...d so hard yesterday setting up, keeping up with selling & tin rattling in the hot sun & packing up at the end of the day and giving up their Easter Saturday for us. We certainly couldn’t have done it without you. We will let you know in a few days, post Easter, what money was raised. $$ If you missed our fundraiser and would like to donate you can donate to our Bendigo Bank account: BSB: 633 000 Account: 172 969 198

14.01.2022 What could be better...Alby & Mavis sharing browse in the sun yesterday.

13.01.2022 Fabulous support from our local community.

13.01.2022 KORI Rescue numbers

12.01.2022 DAISY in her mini enclosure complete with gunyah. She’s a great little climber and also very cute.

12.01.2022 Just checked on Charlie.... he is in a smaller gum today, looking out over the water and munching away.

12.01.2022 Alby & little Harlow are becoming good mates. The noise is raindrops on the roof.

12.01.2022 Yesterday we let Mavis out into the front of the enclosure to spend some time in the winter sun. We also put Alby up on the gunyah to say hello and get reacquainted. Its good for Alby to have his Mum around.

12.01.2022 Charlie decided to walk across the road, he knew where he was going even if we didnt.

11.01.2022 After a quick rub with his scent gland on his chest to mark his territory, Charlie climbs the gunyah.

11.01.2022 A special message to Raymond Island residents and holiday makers: Last weekend volunteers distributed a letter from Koalas of Raymond Island Inc (KORI) which was the brainchild of one of our residents, David Hamilton. David designed and organised the printing for our helpful EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS magnet, PAYNESVILLE DINING & BAR GUIDE and introduction to Koalas of Raymond Island Inc (KORI). David & East Gippsland Newspaper donated their time, money & materials to print t...he mail-out for us at no cost to KORI. We hope you find the Emergency Numbers & Dining & Bar Guide useful including KORI Wildlife Rescue phone numbers. KORI is not affiliated with any other wildlife shelter and are proudly Raymond Island’s only Koala Shelter. KORI is proudly supported by East Gippsland Newspaper’s KENNY KOALA. If any residents need a copy just message, email, text or call. See more

11.01.2022 As Koalas of Raymond Island is run by volunteers we need all the funds we can get to establish our new island shelter. We still have a long way to go. Thank you to all those who have already donated.

10.01.2022 While Alby often wants to climb up and be near his Mum, today he wasnt too sure this was what he had in mind. We are not sure whether Mavis was getting cozy, or more likely she fancied his browse and gunyah.

10.01.2022 Save our Koalas Day of Action for NSW koalas

09.01.2022 This is a dear friend Sue with her daughter Kelsey proudly wearing their koala masks. . A big thank you to everyone that has supported our fundraiser and ordered a mask. Please take a selfie wearing your mask and share it on Facebook. Add a link to Koalas of Raymond Island and help us sell another 150 masks so we can connect power to our treatment room. https://www.facebook.com/koalasofraymondisland/

09.01.2022 Today we met up with Colleen Wood and all the girls & guy from Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter from Rawson. They were on their way to Mallacoota to release rehabilitated koalas that had been rescued during the terrible summer fires there. What a great job youve all done and thanks Colleen for your support and extra equipment etc.

08.01.2022 Monday is going to a very hot day. Please leave out bowls of water for our wildlife NEVER try and give water to a koala from a water bottle or hose, the water can go straight into their lungs. If you see a koala on the ground, please call our local koala shelter.... Koalas of Raymond Island (KORI). 0438 588642 or 0419 152446 If you see people around a koala on the ground or low in a tree, please politely ask them to step back and not stress it.

08.01.2022 KORI have a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds for our much needed Treatment room & Enclosures. Please give us your support for our precious Raymond Island Koalas.

08.01.2022 Harlow was abandoned by his Mum and came in to care when he was only 1.5 kg. Weighing him with teddy is less stressful for him. Teddy weighs 51grams ... so in these photos Harlow was 2.28kg and 2.96kg, he is now almost 4kg and doesn’t need his teddy anymore but is often found sitting on top of Alby.

07.01.2022 It is wonderful to see the bond re-establishing between Alby and his Mum Mavis. The new Gunyahs (branches they climb and sit on) are getting well used and Mavis is now managing to climb and move from one to another. 7 weeks ago we hoped this was possible but the condition Mavis was in we were not overly confident.

06.01.2022 Today it was Charlies time to go back to his home along the waters edge on Raymond Island. Hes a big, old boy with such a docile nature and has been a pleasure to look after. We had to pick him up originally as he was surrounded by tourists during the school holidays as he prefers some of the low trees along the foreshore. Hes had a break and is ready to resume a quiet life. He was last spotted high in a red gum, home. If you want to help us look after old boys like Charlie please donate to: Koalas of Raymond Island Bendigo Bank BSB: 633 000 Account: 172 969 198

05.01.2022 Today we met the lovely ladies from Paynesville Community Craft Centre, Norma Harrison & Wyonne Siacci, who presented KORI with a cheque for $500. We showed the ladies our new shelter and told them Mavis & Albys stories and explained the day to day running of the shelter. We are so grateful for the wonderful support from our local community. 05.01.2022 At last Charlie chose a gum in someones front garden and started munching on the leaves immediately. The gum isnt a native of the island but Charlie likes it.

05.01.2022 Remembering EDNA I have to post this as it was rather funny. We decided to do a quick modification of Edna’s gunyahs when she came back to us Friday afternoon to help Edna climb over to another gunyah and more browse. Carole took to the branch with her trusty saw while Edna sat and ate. She wasn’t fazed at all, perhaps her hearing as well as her sight had gone too. Sweet Edna RIP you were an easy patient.

04.01.2022 KORI have a new Go Fund Me page to help raise funds for our much needed Treatment room & Enclosures. Please give us your support for our precious Raymond Island Koalas.

04.01.2022 A bit of togetherness time between Mum Mavis and her joey Alby, who she had abandoned 9 weeks ago when she was malnourished, in pain with her deformed leg and unable to climb and feed herself and her joey. To see the weight gain, them both feeding so well and her climbing and moving around the enclosure is an amazing feeling for the Carers that have worked hard to get them to this stage. If you would like to help us continue with our work you can donate to: Koalas of Raymond... Island Inc. BSB: 633 000 Acct: 172 969 198 Or our gofundme campaign https://www.gofundme.com/f/gofundmecomCare-for-Koalas-of-Ra

03.01.2022 Mavis continues to thrive and has become an eating machine! Shes also settled down and settled in to her enclosure. Its wonderful to see her round shape and her fur looking a lot healthier, a long way from the skinny koala we brought in.

02.01.2022 A huge CONGRATULATIONS to our founder Shelley Robinson for winning the Paynesville Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award 2021 for her tireless work setting up, managing, promoting and of course caring for koalas for our shelter Koalas of Raymond Island Inc. (KORI). Shelley was also nominated for the East Gippsland Shire Citizen of the Year Award and attended the ceremony last Thursday at Sarsfield. We’re so pleased she’s getting the recognition she deserves.

02.01.2022 An exciting day for us at Koalas of Raymond Island (KORI) with Charlie being our first koala to be released out into our newly completed pre-release pen. What a great result.

02.01.2022 A huge thank you to the amazing ARC (Animal Rescue Cooperative) for donating a Vetario Intensive Care Unit, as well as a portable Intensive Care Unit. These will make a huge difference to the care we will be able to give the wildlife coming into care. Each time we think ARC has been so generous, they top it off with yet more assistance to our Shelter. #AnimalRescueCooperative #WIRES #ARC

02.01.2022 Our little Alby is growing up. Today was his last supplement formula feed. He is eating lots of leaf and has put on over a kilo since coming into care. I think it will be his Carers that will be miss his feeds.

02.01.2022 We were overwhelmed today with a delivery of medical supplies, special formula for the koalas and so many essential items needed at the Shelter. A huge thank you to ARC - Gippsland Wildlife Support Hub, volunteers Haley and Scott (with Ruby the lamb, who has recently been attacked by a fox) who drove all the way from Sale to deliver this to us. Thank you to the amazing Joey Smith who I first spoke to less than 2 weeks ago and who organised all of these much needed and appreciated supplies. What an incredible group of volunteers. Cath, Carole, Jenni and Shelley felt like all their Christmass had arrived opening the boxes and sorting the supplies. Thank you ARC - Animal Rescue Cooperative for supporting our Shelter, Koalas of Raymond Island.

02.01.2022 Thank you David Hamilton....this is brilliant. Bendigo Bank BSB: 633 000 Account: 172 969 198

02.01.2022 Not the best day for a visit (we cant knock the rain we desperately need) but we cant thank you enough for bringing us more goodies.

02.01.2022 A big day at the Shelter earlier this week with our team hard at work building gunyahs to complete our pre release pen. This area is where we release koalas after they have been in care in our enclosures. Here the koalas can climb and build up their muscle strength and we can still monitor their condition and ability to climb before their final release.

02.01.2022 HARLOW is growing up fast and has gone from a little 1.5kg fluff ball to over 3.7 kg since coming into care. He now has only two formula feeds a day and he guzzles down every last drop.

02.01.2022 We have had a very busy week with more sick and injured koalas coming into care. Vet bills, medications and formula costs continue to deplete our limited funds. We are a not for profit organisation and every dollar donated goes directly to caring for our koalas. Donations can be made directly to our Bendigo Bank account. Koalas of Raymond Island Inc. 01.01.2022 Our gorgeous little Harlow was very impatient for his formula today.

01.01.2022 Introducing our newest little bundle of joy DAISY. Daisy came to us after being found in a machinery shed all alone with no Mum in sight. At less than 1.3kg she was definitely in need of care. After being hydrated and given regular formula feeds Daisy has continued to flourish becoming a very active little girl. If you’d like to help us with Daisy’s ongoing care please donate to: Koalas of Raymond Island Inc BSB: 633 000... Account: 172 969 198 See more

01.01.2022 Charlie has settled in well to our newly completed pre release pen and is doing really well climbing the tree.
