24.01.2022 I followed up on some of the River Downs residents who recieved their koala-food trees a fortnight ago and I was impressed that so many had already planted their trees. Here is the handy work of one resident who requested a few extra trees and are helping to create a haven where koalas can come to feed, rest and as a corridor to safely travel through. They were planted towards the back of the block away from houses and infrastructure. Another resident has planted her... trees on really hard rocky ground, creating little dams to be able to catch the rainwater and protecting them from her chickens. Im inspired and amazed by the work that some residents are doing to look after their resident koalas. The big vision of Koala Connectors is to inspire residents to enhance, strengthen, and create new wildlife corridors throughout the area where koalas and other wildlife can thrive and travel safely through the network of koala superhighways. By empowering the community through awareness and education, as land owners they can become part of the solution to save our precious koalas and wildlife in these urban areas. #koalaconnectors #riverdownskoalas #riverdownskoalaconnectors #koalasuperhighways
24.01.2022 Koala-food tree home delivery to residents at River Downs all packed and ready to go. Thank you for all the residents who have expressed interest in planting koala-food trees. Hoping to get around to as many of you today as possible and to offer any guidance and advice. ... If we all can come together as a community in the simple act of planting food trees for koalas then the future of koalas in our suburbs is literally in our hands. For those River Downs residents who would like to plant koala-food trees in their backyard, Ill be doing a second round of deliveries and advice in this month of September which is national Save the Koala month. Koala Connectors is the first stage of our latest program to creatively connect community with biodiversity. #riverdownskoalas #koalaconnectors
23.01.2022 Tree hollows are critical for the survival of our native wildlife. This tree hollow has become home for an unusual guest. https://www.flickr.com/phot/bosscocky//72157715740006466/
23.01.2022 This is a koala that Deborah, one of the residents of River Downs I visited on Saturday to provide her with koala-food trees had filmed. She had initially seen the koala from her kitchen window. Her property is a haven for koalas. She has many mature koala-food trees and as a result koalas seem to visit her yard regularly. It is difficult to tell from the video if the koala has a dirty or wet bottom. If you see a koala that looks like it has a dark wet stain on its bott...om please call the Wildcare hotline on 07 5527 2444 as the koala may have chlamydia. It also looks like she may have a joey in her pouch. If you are a River Downs resident and see any koalas at your property we would love to share your pics and stories here. Simply hashtag your post #riverdownskoalas or #riverdownskoalaconnectors If we come across these hashtags we will be sure to share. For those who missed out on their koala-food trees Ill be doing another home delivery in the month of September at a date still to be confirmed. If you would like some trees for your property and advice so that we can best look after koalas please email me at [email protected] or text me, David 0412816855 with your name, best contact and address Ill contact you when we I do the next run. #riverdownskoalas #riverdownskoalaconnectors
20.01.2022 Woohoo only one more sleep to go before Stage 2 of the Koala Supermarket group planting day at Nerang Country Paradise commences! Yay! Look forward to seeing all you volunteers who have booked in bright and bushy-tailed at 8am for an exciting morning to help our koalas! Heres some pics of the amazing koala crew who joined us for the Stage 1 group planting....
18.01.2022 ...and we were all once today of that koalas dont drink water, that they get their hydration only from the leaves they eat. https://newatlas.com//koalas-drinking-licking-trees-water/
18.01.2022 Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. Greek proverb This saying is contained in a large print in the Nerang Riverkeepers shed at Nerang Country Paradise Parklands.... A big thank you to Mark and Richard from Nerang Riverkeepers for their time, energy and effort today as the three of us made light work of digging the holes in preparation for the stage 2 group planting of the Koala Supermarket next Sunday week 20th September. It was a task I was to be honest dreading to tackle without help. Thank you also to Rosalinde Brinkman for asking them to help. The work they have done at Nerang Country Paradise Parklands over many years is truly astonishing, not to mention restoration and planting works along the Nerang River. Walking regularly through Swift Park along the Nerang River Ive often thought how lucky we are to have such incredible bird life and a lot of this biodiversity can be attributed to this groups work. We are truly blessed to have such often unacknowledged and industrious souls whose labours will be enjoyed by present and future generations.
18.01.2022 This is Russell (whom you would have seen from the video post of him last week in a melalueca tree). Sadly for Russel he had got himself into a bit of a pickle. His home has seen recent urban development, so more than likely trees he used to visit had been bulldozed to make way for a townhouse complex. This, together with the obstacle course of fences isnt an easy place to live for a koala. ... The resident called us out last Thursday and by the time we arrived Russell managed to find a way finally out of the yard. He led us on a wild goose chase and we located him a couple of properties away in a paperbark tree in an early childhood centre carpark. He was too high for us to help him. Then Friday morning the resident called us up again. Russell had got his head caught in between the fence palings and cried out. Luckily the resident was at hand to help him. She then held him under a washing basket till we arrived. What an ordeal he had! He was sent up to Australia Zoo after an initial check up at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital detected he has mild clamydial conjunctivitis. Once he is better we look forward to releasing him. Life isnt easy for a koala trying to traverse an ever changing and complex urban matrix. We left with the resident a thick branch to secure against the fence so that when koalas enter their property in the future they will have an easier way to get out again. The resident who had recently moved to the area, was so concerned about koalas in her neighborhood that she would speak to her neighbours to help find simple solutions to make it easier for koalas to move about. #koalasonthegreen #goldcoastkoalas #koalaconsciouscommunities #koalamovement
16.01.2022 Q. When is a sugar glider not a sugar glider? A. When it is a savannah glider or a Kreffts glider. Interesting article. It states: ... When considered as one species, sugar gliders were widespread, abundant and officially classified as least concern. The distinction of these three species has resulted in a substantially smaller distribution for the sugar glider, making the species vulnerable to large scale habitat destruction, such as the recent bushfires. https://www.google.com.au//a-rare-discovery-we-found-the-s
16.01.2022 Spent the afternoon watering the holes for this Sundays Koala Supermarket koala food tree planting group event at Nerang Country Paradise Parklands. Only 4 more sleeps to go! We cant wait to see you all!...
15.01.2022 In case you missed out last time we have scheduled one more free koala-food tree home delivery for River Downs residents this coming Saturday 26th September 2020 from 8am -12.30pm. Ill be able to provide information and planting advice for residents interested in looking after our koalas. ... To book in please contact me, David, on 0412 816 855 or email me: [email protected] - September is national Save the Koala month and we want to show you how you can help our koalas. Koala Connectors project aims to increase food sources, habitat, and provide greater connectivity so that koalas can travel safely throughout River Downs by supplying residents koala food trees to plant in their backyards. As volunteer koala rescuers my wife and I have attended over 100 koala rescued last year alone mainly on the northern Gold Coast. We are but two of a small army of dedicated volunteer wildlife rescuers and carers working tirelessly to help our wildlife and we cant do it all on our own. We need your help. We are doing a second round where we can deliver the trees to your door. You planting small koala-food tree saplings will only take a few minutes but will have a big impact. Every tree counts for our struggling koalas. Want to get involved the please contact me, David, on 0412816855 or email me on [email protected] Want more info then go to: http://www.koalasonthegreen.com/koala-connectors/
14.01.2022 Thank you to the residents of River Downs today. It was great today to meet a bunch of them, and get a lay of the land so to speak, give advice and provide them with koala-food trees. About 90% of the residents I chatted with have koalas that visit or pass through their properties. One resident has been texting me this afternoon excitedly letting me know that she could see from her kitchen window a koala in a tree in her yard. ... It is such a joy to hear their excitement for koalas and to discuss what we can do to ensure their long term survival in the suburb. I always think how extremely blessed we are to have such incredible wildlife when so many countries have lost theirs. With a bit of care we can ensure that this will be the case well into the future. #riverdownskoalas #riverdownskoalaconnectors
13.01.2022 This is the reason why all the volunteers and myself have worked tirelessly at Arundel Hills Country Club planting koala-food trees for these iconic creatures. Met up with Michelle who looks after the welfare of the wildlife at the course to check up on the health of the planted trees. This mum and bub were in a tree close to the clubhouse. This morning there was also another adult in the tree and so the members were treated to experiencing these quiet and rarely seen a...nimals. I pinch myself every time I go to the golf course driving in the buggy past kangaroos and all sorts of birds and occasionally being treated to the sight of a sleeping koala.
13.01.2022 Pink marks the spot- finished marking out the plant holes for Stage 2 of the Koala Supermarket. Not long to go for planting day! The volunteer Koala Crew will be also planting a row of 50 native shrubs for possums and gliders to create a screen along the edge of Stage 1. Thank you Rosalinde Brinkman from Watergum for organising the laying of the mulch and for everything youve done to date with the project. ... Checked out the Stage 1 trees - 95% survival rate, with some koala food trees showing vigorous growth and others just biding their time. As Stage 2 is a smaller area (less trees to plant) we may have time to replace the few trees in Stage 1 that havent survived. #Koalasupermarket
12.01.2022 We were called out to check on a koala that was trapped in a residents back yard in Coombabah this afternoon. According to the resident he was disoriented and distressed as he couldnt make his way out. By the time we arrived the koala had managed to find a way to climb the fence after many failed attempts. This is a serious issue facing our koalas living in our suburbs. ... After leading us on a wild goose chase, we finally located this mature male (a couple of properties over in an early childhood centre). He had calmed down after his little ordeal chewing away in a melalueca tree. The video I took isnt the best as he was up about 8 metres. Todays call-out highlights the importance of providing safe and easy ways for koalas to travel through our increasingly built-up urban environments. Looking at a Google map the property next door had recently been developed into apartments. Most likely it may have formed part of his range. Quite possibly it may have contained some of his favourite trees that are no longer there. Some simple things we can do to help our suburban koalas are: to put yourself in the shoes..I mean paws of a koala: - how difficult is it for a koala that enters your yard to be able to get out again? Colorbond fences are impossible for koalas to scale. A simple fix is to securely place a log up against the fence. Trees planted close to the fence line can also help. - does your yard provide any food or resting trees? - are your pets kept secure? Be a Koala Conscious Community A really good way to keep our koalas safe and ensure the long-term survival in your area is to create a strong koala-conscious community. Create Your Koala Community Action Plan Get together with your neighbours and create a koala community action plan that begins to see your neighbourhood not as a collection of private properties but as an environment that supports and sustains koalas. You can discuss strategies to help the movement of koalas, how you intend to keep them safe from your pets, where you could plant food trees. Coming Together To Save Our Koalas When we come together as a community and begin to see our neighbourhoods as environments that are homes to other creatures and do so in a holistic way we can begin to find solutions that connect us in deeper ways. #koalaconnectors #koalaconsciouscommunities #koalacommunityactionplan
11.01.2022 Congratulations Coomera Conservation Group that is awesome news! You guys are amazing!
11.01.2022 Poor little pumpkin. What an ordeal little Ruby-Grace has been through being thrown off her mums back from a car accident, losing her mum, and having to go through painful recovery. So sorry little girl for the ordeal youve been through. What an amazing community of dedicated people helping her to recover. ... Today is Save the Koala day and little Ruby-Grace reminds us of just how critical each koala is for the species survival and all the work being done to save them.
10.01.2022 Thank you so much Jennifer Hewerdine. You and your family are amazing! With all your awesome effort Wali and his friends will be very comfortable when they come to visit you and your family. ... It really takes individuals in a community who share a common vision to create a positive future for our urban koalas on the Gold Coast.
08.01.2022 Imagine an eternal home amongst the gum trees with lots of koalas? What an innovative way to help our koalas - forest cemeteries.

06.01.2022 Great to see our friend Loretta Taylor in this short film. Rather than have an arborist completely remove a tree she employed the services of Habi-Tec to remove limbs but also create hollows for our precious wildlife. Trees often need to be 100 years or older before they begin to form hollows which means that with human urban development we have a severe housing shortage for our wildlife. So many species rely on hollows and so every tree and hollow in our suburban environm...ent is critical for their survival. https://www.facebook.com/HabiTecGoldCoast/videos/750791785744490/?vh=e&extid=r6w8b6iQYOdUxCEv
06.01.2022 Lucky these koalas are cute! After tidying up at the Koala Supermarket this morning with Rosalinde Brinkman and then setting up a koala humane trap with Heidi Cuschieri for an injured koala at Clagiraba, now its time to start work
04.01.2022 Thank you so much Kate from Environmental Golf Solutions Aust. for writing the article for the Australian Turfgrass Management Journal about our pilot project we are doing at Arundel Hills Country Club to provide enhanced habitat, food sources and koala superhighways for koalas in the golf course. Our volunteer koala crew look forward to working with you in future golf course projects.
03.01.2022 I reiterate everything that Emily from @Watergum has said in the post below. What an amazing effort all the volunteers made this morning! A big big THANK YOU to you all! The Koala Supermarket plantings are complete. Now we just need to add water (and rain) and watch the plants grow! In the coming weeks irrigation will be installed as will be signage. The signage will let the public know the significance of the Koala Supermarket to help volunteer wildlife rescuers and c...arers to feed their koalas and possums. Other signs will include: facts about koalas, information about some of their favourite koala-food trees and ways to help our koalas. facts about possums and gliders, some of the favorite food, and ways to help our unique possum and glider species. The Koala Supermarket is a collaborative project between Country Paradise Parklands , Watergum and Wildcare Australia Inc. with generous funding from Landcare Australia. A big thank you to Emily Vincent for all your hard work this morning and Rosalinde Brinkman for your ongoing support and work towards the project. Also Martin Collis for helping make this project a reality at Nerang Country Paradise Parklands, as well as Julia for the delicious muffins you baked for us afterwards. A big thank you to Mark and Richard from from Nerang Riverkeepers for all the effort in digging the holes for Stage 2 as well as the guys who sprayed and prepped the site with mulch. It really does take a community to help our wildlife and all of you are showing how its done.
02.01.2022 Heidi and I were called out last night to set up a humane koala trap to capture a sick koala and its back young. A wildlife camera was set up so that we would know when the koala was captured. At 3am we went to pick up the koalas and after that we had to go and find leaf to harvest for feeding the koalas until they could be taken to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for assessment when the hospital opened. The Koala Supermarket at Nerang highlights the need for safe and convenien...t facilities where fodder can be harvested for rescued overnight koalas in care by volunteer wildlife rescuers and volunteers. Thank you to those amazing volunteers who attended the first stage group planting. We are excited to have those booked in for 20th September to help plant stage 2 of this important project. A big thank you also goes to Martin Collis and the Country Paradise Parklands, Rosalinde Brinkman and Emily Vincent from Watergum together with along with Shane and a number of Wildcare Australia Inc. volunteers and the generous funding from Landcare Australia. The best time to plant trees is now, especially when planting a Koala Supermarket as we need a few years before wildlife volunteers can utilise this valuable asset.
02.01.2022 Great news for Koalas!
