23.01.2022 The weather was more suitable to pelicans than shearing alpacas today. Always a huge advantage when alpacas can be kept shedded and dry as we can still shear. If rain is forecast for your shearing day(s) and you can shed it always pays to shed them

23.01.2022 Bandit - IAR 229480 - Pedigree http://bit.ly/IAR-229480 - Silver Grey Bandit is a very proud, upstanding male with a look at me head. His fine fleece is pleasingly uniform into the extremities. The consistency of the rich medium grey will delight many grey breeders. Bandit's certification is pending, and he is ready to work. Location Fleurieu Peninsula but can help with transport almost anywhere in Australia.

22.01.2022 I know some people don't like ear tags in their alpacas or don't see the need with small numbers but as we have been heading round the state shearing, particularly around last years devastating Cudlee Creek fire grounds we have seen a great idea. Owners have been writing their mobile number on the ear tags. This doesn't just apply to natural disasters, but could help reunite you with your alpacas if a tree falls on a boundary fence or someone leaves the gate open! So if you find a wandering alpaca and it has a plastic ear tag, try and take a look, it may have the owners phone number on it.

22.01.2022 Well the 2020 alpaca season starts now. This year with all its foibles is the earliest we have started. The van is loaded and we are on route to Alice Springs!

22.01.2022 After the purchase of Voyager at the Breeders Choice Auction, we are starting to see cria on the ground. It looks like he may be an excellent investment if this cria is anything to go by. It's exciting to see those long lustrous staples breaking down into smaller staples. Even the centre of the brisket is silky soft.

19.01.2022 As we unpack and reflect on an amazing 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show, it would be amiss not to recognise Keryn Burns and her team's hard work that made the show such a success. It cannot have been an easy job, particularly this year. All your hard work is truly appreciated, and we look forward to next year. It was great to see the show's live stream and all the amazing photos published by Robert Kennedy-Gane showing the world that Australian Alpacas are back in the show ring.... Being the only alpaca show worldwide that I am aware of where you live on-site for days, a big thank you goes to Tudor Catering Pty Ltd for the great meals at very sensible prices. And for those of you keeping score, no, we did not break down in either direction! Although we did spend an hour at the panel beaters today inspecting the damage from the kangaroo.

17.01.2022 While the trusty Viv has years ahead of her working on the farm and with the alpacas she will soon have an apprentice to keep her on her toes.

17.01.2022 We seem to be spending a huge amount of time in shearing sheds currently. Loved this accident with an image filter on a photo taken today.

17.01.2022 Shearing in the Rain There are no two ways about it while out and about shearing over the last few weeks the weather has been weird. We have seen 43C to single digits raining and most things in between. The heat may be unpleasant, but it is the rain that causes us a major headache. ...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Well this weather is certainly not conducive to working through the shearing backlog. Taken out the back of a shearing shed today. With rain forecast, some very heavy for the next few days, please let your shearers know if you can't keep dry animals. If you are shearing outside and doing more than a couple the ground needs to have dried out as well so your shearer doesn't sink into a mud hole as the ground churns up.

14.01.2022 This farming lark is hard work if you are just a young pup. Just as well there's a 25 minute drive between farms to recuperate. #workingdog #alpacafarm #fleurieupeninsula

13.01.2022 Queensland Shearing Update Firstly thank you all for your patience this is proving to be a very challenging season. To put everyone’s mine at rest yes we are still planning on heading to Queensland to shear. We expect to be leaving the week commencing 17th August. The schedule was finalised on Tuesday to be distributed Wednesday and then Queensland closed its border to NSW. So we are just trying to work out exactly what that means for our travel. When speaking to various Quee...nsland departments yesterday they do not have a complete list of entry requirements yet come the border closure to NSW on Saturday we should know more. Or they are not willing to distribute them yet. Being based in SA we can cross the SA - Queensland border however we would prefer to travel though NSW otherwise it adds at least 2 days drive each way and over 1600km of outback tracks where we are very exposed to the risks of bad weather and adds significant costs to us. Please rest assured though we are not looking at passing those on, everyone is having a tough enough year. We are accepting this may not be much more than a break even only year. We are trying to post regular updates to the Facebook page to keep people informed. https://www.facebook.com/kobleralpacas/ We will also be distributing our covid safe plan shortly which will detail record keeping we need to keep amongst other things. There is nothing ownous in the there. It is worth noting a number of the touring shearing contractors are all talking to each other trying to get the best outcome for everyone and this season. Add to this work being done behind the scenes by AAA on all our behalf there is a huge effort to avoid as much disruption as possible and get the best outcome for everyone. See more

13.01.2022 For the attention of all South Australian shearing clients due to be sheared in the next week. We are on the road shearing for the next few hours and are aware of the state covid lockdown announcement but will not have chance to see what this means for everyone expecting shearing in the next week. As soon as we get some answers we will update everyone. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

11.01.2022 The Wedge Tail Eagle, Australia's largest bird of prey weighing up to 6kg with a wing span up to almost 3m. Typically preys on rabbits, smaller native animals including wallabies and smaller kangaroo, possums, wombats and not opposed to targeting a smaller cria or lamb. There is evidence of these eagles working in pairs to segregate / isolate a prey animal from a group. They may be a majestic bird but not what you want circling above paddocks with expectant mums. I'm not about to become a wildlife videographer.

11.01.2022 Trying to get photos of potential herd guards for an enquiry, ended up with a wonderful photo, probably not the best one from a sales point of view.

11.01.2022 Queensland Shearing Update Due to storm and heavy rain activity as a precaution parts of the Birdsville track have been closed with an assessment on Monday for damage. The outcome of this will obviously control our departure date. We are still aiming to depart week beginning 17th August. If we have to push it back a little we will. We have also been made aware of another route via NT which we can now use as the NT government no longer considers the Brisbane / Logan area a Cov...id hotspot. It is at times like this the amazing alpaca community shines and we are so grateful to be apart of it. We have had many messages of support, offers of help along the way and sharing of knowledge/advice from people who do this journey regularly. This has included the amazingly generous offer of lending a Sat phone to ensure we stay safe if we run into trouble in some of these remote areas. You know who you are, thank you doesn't say enough.

10.01.2022 We regularly have a large number of kangaroos on the farms. While kangaroos hopping across paddocks, particularly at sunset, makes for a uniquely Australian vista, it causes pasture availability and forecasting issues at times. Today, however, helping themselves to the hay runs does take the mick. #alpacafarm #fleurieupeninsula #kangaroo #alpaca

09.01.2022 What do you mean the tray is full! There's no way I'm running, I've been back and forth between that paddock so many times today. #workingdog #alpacafarm #fleurieupeninsula

09.01.2022 South Australian Shearing Clients Update - If you are expecting to have your alpacas sheared by us in the next 14 days please read. As we read the current restrictions https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/response "The following will be permitted to remain OPERATIONAL to maintain critical services only: ....... Essential agriculture services .... " From the department of Agriculture Water and the Environment https://www.agriculture.gov.au/coronavirus/food-agriculture "Essential services To slow the outbreak, Australia has introduced restrictions on non-essential gatherings and businesses. Essential services will continue. This includes: farming forestry fibre production food and beverage production agriculture saleyards and auctions Also exempt are those who support these businesses." Where you have contracted us to come and shear your alpacas we believe we will still be able to operate. We will seek final confirmation in the morning from the relevant department. We are scheduled to be running a number of our trailer days in the next fortnight. Currently we do not believe we will be able to operate these. Regrettably this also means where there may be a visit tucked in on route back from a location regrettably this will require rescheduling. All we can ask is for your patience and understanding as we try and work through these evolving restrictions.

08.01.2022 First day of judging at Sydney Royal Alpaca Show and our only entry today. First place Kobler Prados More Commotion junior black male.

08.01.2022 We love our dogs (even when caught stealing a show fleece to make a nest out of) and love traveling around and meeting a multitude of farm dogs around the country. However, when it comes to shearing time as evidenced by the various cuts and bruises on our bodies from stressed stock we implore you to restrain your dogs from stirring up alpacas in holding pens, snapping at alpacas as they are loaded onto a table for shearing or generally being a trip hazard around shearing. Your alpacas will also thank you for it as well. So please don't take offence if we ask you to remove your dog from a shearing area its not because we don't like your dog or dogs its for everyones safety.

08.01.2022 Don't mind me girls just checking for new babies... Anyone...

07.01.2022 On a very foggy morning a group of new arrivals to the farm very keen to get out of the yards and into their own paddock.

06.01.2022 Well it's 0315 and in 1430km we will arrive at Sydney Royal Alpaca Show our first show in 19 months.

06.01.2022 Clearing all the shearing gear out of the van ready to go to Sydney Royal Alpaca Show . My poor Tilley is showing how long and dirty this shearing season has been. Hard to believe it started way back in the middle of August and still has a few jobs left to do when we get back.

05.01.2022 Shearing Shed Hack After a visit Ikea and making use of their paper tape measures don't throw them away recycle them in the shearing shed instead. With a little bit of heavy duty clear tape to attach them to the skirting table; it helps ensure we should never misclass a fleece on length.

05.01.2022 It might have had something to do with the weather but does anyone else feel they are being watched by the alpacas when they travel round the paddocks?

04.01.2022 Queensland Shearing update Thank you all for your patience. Everyone should have now received an email from us with shearing dates. There have been a couple bounce back and I will follow those up. ... If you have not received an email and are expecting us to shear for you you need to contact us urgently. With 70 stops in 14 days we are going to be very busy. Once again thanks for your patience.

04.01.2022 The weather may not be cooperating but after more than 2 weeks out due to injury sustained while shearing we are back on the road again. Thank you all for your patience as we work through the scheduling backlog.

03.01.2022 Sydney Easter show continued on Saturday with 12 more Alpacas exhibited. 4 firsts, 2 seconds, 4 thirds, a fourth and a highly commended. Very proud of the team with every alpaca placing in some very competitive classes.

02.01.2022 Well this slows down the days mobile shearing

02.01.2022 Sometimes you just have a grotty day, sheared, vaccinated, ear tagged and weaned all on the same day.

01.01.2022 Our Queensland 2020 shearing season is now complete. We saw a lot more of your country than we had planned for. Thank you everyone for your support. I know it was a far tougher season for all with compromises needed. A special thank you to Sarah Williams, who stepped up at the last minute to come and lend a hand. A few statistics for the tour. 20 days on the road ~150 hours drive time... ~13,500km covered (thats almost Darwin to London!) ~1200ltr diesel 3 kangaroo strikes in 90 minutes outside Longreach 14 days of shearing 72 locations sheared ~600 head sheared We look forward to seeing you all again next year. If you are still in need of shearing in Queensland, we may be able to help you find someone still up there. Our SA season commences soon.
