25.01.2022 It's said that in anything there's no secret techniques better than Kihon, and this is the same in Shint Mus-ry J. #shintomusoryu #jodo #jojutsu #kenjutsu #uchikomi #kiriotoshi #gasshiuchi #shintoryu #kobudokaiaustralia #nitojuku

25.01.2022 "This interview was turned into a book, only forty-one pages, first in Japanese and now in English, one I consider to be the single most important work for anyone interested in kory bugei." 24.01.2022 This video clip was publicly available on the late Ishida Sensei's now-defunct Misogi website, under the Speaking on the jo of Nishioka Tsuneo shihan () article. It is about Nukiuchi - to draw and strike in the same motion. We had subtitled it for inclusion on the English translation of the aforementioned article, but have opted to just upload it here instead. The drawing style (nuki-gata) that Nishioka sensei highlights as a little difficult in the beginning is c...learly important for Uchidachi in SMR Jodo. And to give some further context as to why and what it leads to, here's one of Ishida Sensei's 2013 Keiko Journals on the same topic. That style of drawing the sword near horizontal and directly sideways to the right can be found in kata of Omote, Chudan, Kage, Samidare and Okuden. Additionally, if you’re interested, a few other translated Keiko Journals of Ishida Sensei’s can be found on our main page timeline and numerous other video clips are available under the Videos section of our Facebook page too. 120 20th January In today’s keiko again, I explained the battou of Uchidachi, but it seems this is rather difficult. At the time the Kote and Suigetsu is taken by the Jo, it is difficult for them to do the motion that cuts the fingers of Shidachi under the jo while drawing the sword directly sideways to the right. Also, Shijo can't do their part well if Uchidachi is not able to do this Tachisabaki (sword movement) properly. Nishioka sensei always used to say that it was a mistake to draw the sword upwards as Uchidachi was stepping backward. In doing this part, Tachi should not step back but needs to always have the mindset to cut the Shijo. This Tachisabaki is one of the Tachisabaki in Gomuso, and I suppose the one who had mastered Gomuso would not teach this in an odd way, Nishioka sensei used to say. Therefore, I think it is important to have this understanding while doing keiko that to practice the usage of Tachi properly and thoroughly in the way it is being taught is going to lead its way to Gomuso.

22.01.2022 A couple of the late Ishida Senseis 2013 Keiko Journals on the importance to master Shinto-ryu Kenjutsu (both Omote & Ura), and the vital factor to create a good Uchidachi in Shinto Muso-ryu Jo. 127 Training Journal 7th December ...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Aijokai Shinto Muso-ryu Jo embu from 2011 at Atsuta Jingu, featuring Tomita Takashi shihan (shidachi) and the late Ishida Hiroaki shihan (uchidachi).

20.01.2022 When I first met Ishida Sensei I noticed his use of the feet was different to other Shihan that I had been exposed to. In particular, his core posture was subtly different and he pivoted on the heels of both feet as a fundamental of his movement (not in all waza, of course). When I asked him about it, saying that I have never seen anybody do this, he explained why it is so important to put the weight into the heels of both feet and utilise the outside edge of the foot and li...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Below is one of Ishida Senseis 2013 Keiko Journals that gives some additional context to the waza in this video clip, which is from Part 1 of Ishida Senseis Lecture series. The complete version can be found under the videos section of our Facebook page. "maruki o motte suigetsu o shire", the inspiration of the founder, Muso Gonnosuke, is something that practitioners of Shinto Muso-ryu are, no doubt, familiar with. 13.01.2022 A couple of photos from Hamaji senseis home dj Seikan. Undeservingly, yet gratefully, being a little spoilt with two shihan for keiko, sharing their combined insights and knowledge from training in Shint Mus-ry Jjutsu for far longer than I have been alive.

13.01.2022 This is the last thing for the time-being I will share from Ishida Senseis Facebook Keiko Journals in English. It is more philosophical and spiritual in nature and is about the kokoro (also a way of thinking) and seishin of Katageiko, the relationship between Uchidachi and Shidachi, and at the heart of it, Katsujinken (life-giving sword). I have included some of Ishida Senseis own commentary and, after some deliberation, a relevant excerpt from some correspondence between u...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Today it has been 2 years since my mentor passed away. I express my deepest gratitude for the great favour bestowed upon me during his lifetime and the Yoin he has left with me. I sincerely pray for his soul to rest in peace.

12.01.2022 [Also below is one of Ishida senseis keiko journals regarding Kuritsuke] In this video, the late Ishida sensei is illuminating the riai (underlying rationale) of his kuritsuke waza, as well as demonstrating the subtlety of body and jo movements in the application of it on uchidachi. In keiko, Ishida sensei continually taught that the proper execution of the kuritsuke series of waza, like numerous other waza in Jo, involved the utilisation of an essential principle contained...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Juttejutsu, although this video clip is from Ikkaku-ryu, shares some interesting riai (underlying rationale) with Nito-ryu. Apart from the alternate movement o...f the feet in the manner of walking that Musashi admonishes, which is a fundamental of Juttejutsu ashisabaki, theres also the ideal method of moving from the tip area towards the area in front of tsuba of an opponents sword by not immediately applying downward pressure but rather seeking to ride with a more forward intention to in effect slide in. Musashi in the Mirror on the Way of Combat instructs us on this in about closing the distance when facing off. He refers to those points of contact as "past" (kako), "present" (genzai) and "future" (mirai), and when considering the arrow of time, it fits within the natural order and nature of time itself. Ishida Hiroaki sensei, featured in this clip, referred to the past and future areas of the opponents sword, within his teachings, as the "water moon" (suigetsu) and "heavenly moon" (tengetsu). Regardless of terminology, moving from one section towards another when advancing while utilising the abovementioned riai, and then depending on the actual weapon and technique being used to subsequently apply it from the appropriate position is the real importance and ultimate teaching. Anyway, the Kokura Hibun states that Musashi created his art of the two swords on the basis of the art of the Jutte, and it would make sense that theres some commonality and similarity with the riai between it and Nito-ryu. #jutte #juttejutsu #ikkakuryu #nitenichiryu #nitoryu #nitojuku #musashi #miyamotomusashi #kobudokaiaustralia

10.01.2022 Preface: In the comments of a previous post I mentioned I might post separately an English Translation of one of Ishida Senseis past Keiko Journals from Facebook, with some commentary having received the benefit of his personal teachings. These numerous Journals were written over a year for his students, and formed the basis of his last book. There is a wealth of information and numerous insights within this book, and perhaps one day it may be made available in English. I d...Continue reading
