10.01.2022 A bit of a reflection to think about. Over 50 Years in Bob's own business, he has created a Martial Arts for all Australians that grew out of the need for Bob's... security work. A martial arts that protected them on the doors and streets that was met with drunken patronage every night due to the pubs closing early. And as he grew as a martial artists he travelled to educate himself to bring back and incorporate as many new techniques and knowledge as possible. Bob also introduced our Family of Brotherhood and Sisterhood through the presenting of crosses. For many that had come from broken or dysfunctional homes, this Bob Jones Family became their lifeline. The culture, clubs and business progressed and grew. Many more BJMA families grew from those given their crosses that went out and grew clubs across Australia, New Zealand and the world. At a conservative guess using simple maths this means that over 50 years around at least 100,000 BJMA Family. There has also been 50 years of students and a guess, 1/4 of a million people, that have graded if not more. Some to black, some made it a lifetime commitment and have run BJMA Affiliated clubs for decades. All of those Club Operators have trained and graded people in their communities, making real change to people's lives, as Mick Clark has been honoured today (amongst many over the years). I know as someone that stopped training in my teen years, how I have applied this knowledge to every part of my life. Every graded person takes something away from their time training and applies it to their life's progression. Bob has created a movement of life changers and inspires as he leads. Recently an article attached Bob's image to an old story without pointing out his beneficial influence of the era and leaving the narrative tainted. This upset me because the article associated Bob with criminality which is a blatantly untrue (remember the numbers that have passed through the doors, he has cared for them all regardlessly). As I think about all the good that has come to those that have trained and our current culture that has developed and matured over the last 20 years, I felt to not address this would be a disservice. I have had the pleasure of visiting the majority of BJMA Affiliated Clubs prior to Covid after my 40 odd year absence and I am in awe of where the movement is today. BJMA Affiliated Clubs are filled with families, Mum, Dad and the kids on the club floors that train together as Martial Artists participating in a sport that keeps them disciplined and healthy, coached by the best. I have witnessed gradings where older people have given their all with the support of their trainers to achieve. The violence of a gone by era that created this tough system, our ability to mature and grow and keep progressing, were built on an amazing foundation. 'The Best of Everything in Progression' mantra has served BJMA perfectly because that is what BJMA personifies. Training for Strength Together doesn't only apply while on the floor, it became a lifetime commitment. Generations of people have taken these principles and applied them to all aspects of their lives, knowing that they are still part of this huge family we call BJMA created by Bob Jones, 10th Degree, my father. I nominated my father for Senior Australian of the Year this year as I would dearly love to see his contribution to Australia recognised, but nearly everyday someone rings to seek him out to say thank you for changing their lives and I see evidence everywhere of the difference he has made and I thank you all for sharing those stories with me. We collectively already know he is an Australian of the Year, every year. See more
