25.01.2022 The beginning of the Spring Season Rapidly growing pasture during the beginning of Spring can push many sugar sensitive and laminitis prone horses and ponies over the edge. It does not take very large amounts of lush grass, even an overnight ‘binge’ on high ‘sugar’ pastures can trigger laminitis in cresty or overweight horses and ponies. Careful grazing and dietary management are important during high risk periods to avoid repeated episodes of laminitis. In addition, a course of Kohnke’s Own TRIM can help strip off cresty necks and abnormal fat deposits quickly and easily. TRIM has helped horses during the Spring and Summer laminitis season for over 10 years! You can buy TRIM from the Kohnke’s Own online store https://www.kohnkesown.com/trim-2/

24.01.2022 Lower back and sacroiliac pain is common in equestrian horses. Up to 50% of all back injuries are associated with the sacroiliac ligaments and joints. Horses with a well-developed back line and hindquarters are less likely to suffer from sacroiliac pain. Long term sacroiliac weakness, muscle spasms and discomfort can reduce hind limb action, leading to muscle wastage in the lower back region. Simple rehabilitation exercises are effective in helping to re-build and strengthen the croup muscles and sacroiliac ligaments for a quicker and better recovery. A course of Kohnke’s Own Muscle XL can help to accelerate recovery and improve top-line, muscle strength and movement

23.01.2022 "My first encounter was back many, many moons ago, when my parents bought me a beautiful quarter horse mare in foal. I used Kohnke’s Own Cell-Grow with her and then on her foal. Both went very well on it. I currently use TRIM for my two used to be ‘fatties’ with Cell-Vital and my other 5 also get Cell-Vital. Photo collage of my beautiful ponies ranging from 2 years to 15 years. B Douglas.

22.01.2022 Common signs of hindgut problems in horses include poorly digested particles in feed, smelly or ‘cow pat’ manure or struggling to maintain condition or normal weight. Some horses can be sensitive to touch around the flank or when rugging, others may show variable temperament, random ‘spooky behaviour’, have sensitive skin or a rough and dull coat. Horses with more serious hindgut problems often experience scouring or intermittent loose manure, especially after sudden feed, ha...y or grass changes. Kohnke’s Own FABBY is the premium probiotic and prebiotic supplement to support optimum health of the digestive system, particularly digestive efficiency and the function of the hindgut. FABBY is recommended for all horses including those with poor hindgut function and for all other horses as a daily premium probiotic and prebiotic supplement. https://www.kohnkesown.com/fabby/

Thank you for supporting local events.

17.01.2022 Common causes of weight loss or poor health in aged horses 1. Poor teeth condition this reduces its ability to properly chew concentrate feeds, grains and hay 2. Loose or watery manure aged horses may develop a reduced ability to absorb water from their hindgut, or suffer irritable bowel syndrome 3. Arthritic conditions and reduced mobility this may restrict a horse’s ability to walk to graze and harvest its own feed... 4. Heavy worm burdens horses’ natural immunity to worms wanes with increasing age 5. Reduced digestive efficiency this happens with age, horses cannot digest or absorb all nutrients provided by feed. 16.01.2022 We have had some lovely feedback from loyal Kohnke's Own customers who have been using our products for many years, thank you to everyone for sharing. We will be highlighting some of the wonderful stories from customers over the next few weeks. It would be nearly 16 years ago that my parents bought me my first horse and my coach helped me with a diet, including Kohnke’s Own Cell-Vital. My horse looked a million dollars and since then I have always gravitated towards Kohnke’s products because they’re great value for money, scientifically researched and they just WORK. E Wilson.

16.01.2022 Laminitis or Founder? The words laminitis and founder are often used interchangeably, although they are similar, they are not the same thing. The term laminitis refers to the inflammation of the lamellae, compared to the word founder, which describes the rotation of the coffin bone which is caused by laminitis. A prior episode of laminitis increases the likelihood of further episodes as hoof structure and circulation is often compromised. Careful management to minimise recurrence is paramount to maintain a horse’s sound and working lifestyle. For more information on laminitis contact Kohnke’s Own for a free copy of Dr. John’s laminitis factsheet. https://www.kohnkesown.com/trim-2/

15.01.2022 I started Sr. William on Cell-Vital back in 2013, which is actually the best vitamin I have ever given a horse! I put Sr. William on TRIM every spring and summer when the grass is very fattening. I found TRIM actually helped him loose the weight and he felt much better and alert. I often get asked what vitamins and minerals to give and I can not go past Kohnke’s Own! Bibi L, NSW Shop TRIM now: https://www.kohnkesown.com/trim-2/

14.01.2022 Is your horse at risk of bone problems and Big Head? The growth of tropical grasses, such as kikuyu and setaria, in QLD, NT and coastal areas of NSW and VIC can cause bone weakness in grazing horses. Find out more about this increasingly common problem in this helpful blog! www.kohnkesown.com/calcium-deficiency-in-horses-grazing-tro

14.01.2022 Why do joints deteriorate? Overloading, concussion, and repetitive joint stress are key risk factors that commonly affect joint health, function and mobility in performance and working horses. The lower limb joints are subject to high loading forces, compression and wear and tear during exercise. Poor limb conformation and inadequate nutrition as a foal can exacerbate the risk of joint damage. ... Joint cartilage has no blood or nerve supply and relies on joint fluid for its nutrition. It’s often the first structure to degrade because of concussive thinning due to joint wear and tear, resulting in loss of its rebound properties and resilience. Once the highly sensitive bone layer underneath the cartilage is exposed, the horse will develop pain and lameness. Kohnke's Own Redi-Flex ensures maintenance of healthy joints, tendons and ligaments in all horses, helping to improve and maintain overall joint health and function. https://www.kohnkesown.com/redi-flex/

14.01.2022 It’s the type of spring cleaning that never seems to end!

13.01.2022 Our newest launch, Reboot HOOF+ has been extensively tested and field trialled with over 100 Aussie horses over a 4 year period. Horse owners had often used other brands of hoof supplements for their horses’ hoof problems before starting Reboot HOOF+. All horse owners which responded reported that Reboot HOOF+ was Much Better than previous products used. This is because the formulation of Reboot HOOF+ includes a range of nutrients linked to hoof health, growth and improved ...quality. It does not supply only biotin, or other limited nutrients in overload quantities, instead, the formulation uses the power of ‘synergy’ so that the nutrients provided by Reboot HOOF+ work together to achieve a beneficial effect in all types of horses, irrespective of breed, age, exercise level or diet. Supplementing with Reboot HOOF+ quickly showed visible improvements, with first results in the quality and growth of the hooves seen within 7-10 weeks after starting supplementation. All horse owners surveyed were Very Pleased with how Reboot HOOF+ helped their horse’s hooves. Take a look at some more of these results and statistics!

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Alyssa Walsh and her team of horses for their recent show success! Including Runner Up Small Pony and Top 10 Large Pony at the recent SHC Pacific Coast Championships as well as Supreme Ridden Derivative at the annual Hawkesbury Show, just to name a few! 'Mini Legs' and 'Roswell' are always on their best behaviour thanks to Mag-E!

13.01.2022 Control the Spread of Weeds Horses are selective grazers, often eating out palatable species, leaving rough grasses, prickly or ‘unattractive’ plants and weeds. Weed seeds can be spread by wind, water and birds, in hay and by horse manure. Horses will consume the seeds of weeds from a mature plant or in hay and then spread these to other paddocks or areas in the field. Small weed seeds, less than 3mm in diameter, can pass undigested through the equine digestive tract, 80% of... the whole small seeds ingested are eliminated in the droppings in 34 days, but they can take up to 14 days to be completely purged into the droppings. Up to 90% of small weed seeds remain viable and will germinate when passed in the droppings of horses. Ideally, new horses should be ‘quarantined’ for at least 5 7 days to eliminate small weed seeds before introduction to another pasture. Regular clean-up of weeds in manure ‘roughs’, mowing to scatter manure and cutting down weed plants before they seed, as well as spot spraying before the weeds mature, will help to control the spread of common small weed seeds.

13.01.2022 To all the truly special horses out there!

12.01.2022 "My Quarter horse mare suffered a paddock injury where she damaged the top of her hoof and the coronet band. The injury healed well but the new hoof that grew from that area was much weaker and she would regularly suffer a split that went from the ground right to the coronet band and the growth was also very uneven. I started her on Reboot HOOF+ and within 4-6 weeks you could see the improved growth and it looked much healthier. It took around 9 months to fully grow out and see the optimum result. Every trim you could see the strength and structure of her hoof improving. She now has no problems at all." - Nerida S. NSW

10.01.2022 There are 3 main ways to give Gastro-Coat. 1. A daily dose mixed into the feed is preferred for picky or reluctant eaters, or as a supportive supplement for maintaining general gastric health and function, or complementary to omeprazole veterinary medications. 2. Gastro-Coat can be given mixed into a small feed of lucerne chaff (1 Litre of chaff per 100 kg body weight) approximately 30 minutes before exercise. This small ‘snack’ feed of Gastro-Coat is also beneficial before ...travelling. 3. Gastro-Coat can also be given as an oral paste, made with vegetable oil, within 5-10 minutes prior ridden work or travelling. For more information, visit: https://www.kohnkesown.com/gastro-coat/

07.01.2022 I first spoke with the team from Kohnke’s Own last year about my pony Jack’s manure problem he was never really scouring, but he was a bit messy and would dribble, especially on grains, certain hays or spring grass. Within a couple of weeks of commencing the FABBY trial he started to improve with firmer manure and less dribble. He is now fully normal and has consistently good manure, even with the new Spring grass. Jack also used to get tummy aches, especially at competitions. Now he is much happier and doesn’t kick up or show symptoms of gut pain, even when competing often. Kirsty P, VIC

05.01.2022 To celebrate the recent launch of Reboot HOOF+, we would love to share a testimonial from Ashley S in NSW who loves our newest supplement just as much as we do. Preparing my young Clydesdale stallion for the show ring was a challenge during the drought. With the dry conditions we had ongoing problems with feather mites and the lack of good quality feed left the hair growth very slow. I was successful in many shows throughout NSW and was then accepted to enter the Sydney Ro...yal. In the weeks leading up to this we had another outbreak of feather mite and my colt chewed off parts of his feathers. Desperate to find something that would help these regrow in a hurry, I put him on Reboot HOOF+. The difference was amazing, within 3 weeks his feathers had grown better than they had ever looked before, his coat had extra shine, and his mane and tail increased in thickness whilst being very soft and manageable. https://www.kohnkesown.com/reboot-hoof/

04.01.2022 Calcium for Horses Tropical grasses such as kikuyu and setaria are common in QLD and NT, but the warmer weather has allowed the growth of these grasses in NSW and VIC as well. This is a problem for grazing horses due to oxalate chemicals which are present in these types of grasses. Horses grazing tropical, oxalate-containing grasses are at an increased risk of bone weakness, bone fractures and Big Head Syndrome. Signs and symptoms of poor calcium uptake vary and not all hors...es experience early signs of skeletal weakness until serious problems occur. Providing a high quality, specific calcium and bone mineral supplement to horses grazing on tropical, oxalate-containing grasses is essential to prevent osteoporosis, fractures and Big Head Syndrome. Kohnke’s Own Cal-XTRA is a specific calcium and bone mineral supplement which supports calcium absorption and utilisation. Cal-XTRA is trusted by many horse owners across Australia to support horses with poor calcium uptake from grazing tropical grasses. Cal-XTRA can also be used as an economical calcium supplement for horses with increased needs of bone minerals, for example, low lucerne diets. Read more about Cal-XTRA here: https://www.kohnkesown.com/calxtra/

04.01.2022 Getting Back into Training after the Summer Holidays. It is not uncommon for horses and ponies to lose top-line and muscle tone after a few weeks off over the festive season. It can often take some time to re-build muscle tone and strength after time off. There are many training exercises specifically designed to help strengthen your horse’s muscles. You can help to rebuild muscle bulk and top-line through nutrition by providing a supplement of muscle ‘foods’ with Kohnke’s Ow...n Muscle XL. Kohnke’s Own Muscle XL provides a natural source of top quality protein, a special ratio of pure BCAAs, vitamin E and organic sulfur for top-line development plus recovery of tired muscles after training. With a specific, scientifically formulated and research tested combination of high potency muscle foods, Muscle XL can help your horse improve muscle bulk in just 10 21 days. Muscle XL can be used as a targeted muscle builder in all horses, including lightly worked pleasure horses, those in regular training and competition as well as those recovering from muscle injuries.

03.01.2022 Feeding Young Horses for Future Success The developmental stage of a young horse from 3 - 9 months of age, corresponding to the change between weaning and yearling, is one of the most critical periods of their first formative years. A steady growth rate, fuelled by balanced nutrition, will help to set the foundation for soundness and long term athletic potential of the adult sporting horse. A large percentage of breakdown and unsoundness in working horses can be traced back... to skeletal growth disorders occurring in their first year of life. Developmental disorders include osteochondrosis, physitis and other limb deformities, which can severely impact the health, movement and future soundness of a horse. Common symptoms include apple-like joints, bent legs, big knees, hocks or fetlocks and juvenile arthritis. To avoid these poor growth issues, it is essential to carefully control and not exceed the energy requirements of a young horse as well as ensure adequate intake of good quality protein, calcium and trace-minerals to aim at a steady, moderate rate of growth. Rapid growth rates, fuelled by overfeeding young horses with concentrated feeds, increases the risk of developmental disorders. Kohnke’s Own Cell-Grow is the perfect supplement for growing horses. The concentrated, carefully balanced formula includes a full range of bone minerals, trace-minerals and vitamins which are scientifically proven to reduce the risk of bone and joint abnormalities or other growth disorders in young horses. Cell-Grow has two different supplementation rates for weanlings and yearlings based on the growth rate and expected mature size of the horse. This allows a more careful control of nutrition in rapidly growing horses of any breed. From hobby breeders to commercial studs, Cell-Grow has been used successfully for many years. Cell-Grow is a fundamental support to the preparation of strong and sound young horses to help ensure a long career in their chosen field. If you would like advice on feeding your young horse, contact the Kohnke’s Own team by Freecall 1800 112 227, email [email protected] or message our Facebook page.
