24.01.2022 It takes great courage and determination when taking on challenges such as deciding to walk the Kokoda Trail. Call it cliche but we’d be doing ourselves a great deal of disservice if we’re not reminding ourselves that Kokoda is arduously challenging physically, mentally and emotionally. Therefore, you need to train hard, prepare well, be of the right mindset and have a competent support network to help you succeed. ... Also, having a zest for adventure, getting off the beaten trek and being thrown out of your comfort zone will be advantageous. 24.01.2022 Gripping as it may seem, Kokoda is everything you’d hoped for on a wartime jungle pilgrimage-breathtaking, desolate, picturesque and precipitous, weathered by constant monsoonal downpours, high humidity and soaring and freezing temperatures. Soldiers in the war battled with the environmental conditions which resulted in significant non-battle casualties through natural causes. You can just see our trek negotiating a ridgeline, swamped and dwarfed by the overwhelmingly thick ...and towering jungle. 21.01.2022 This is Menari along the Kokoda Trail, where we love to camp. The village is a perpetual blanket of greenery, bordered by the towering and dark turquoise mountains of the Owen Stanley Range, where fierce battles raged between Australian and Japanese armies. Today, the village is a peaceful plethora of lovely villagers living in their beautifully built hamlet communities, a far cry from the bloody struggles of WW2. 17.01.2022 Can you figure out where everyone is? You can because no one’s camouflaged. During the Kokoda campaign in the Second World War, the art of camouflage and concealment was used extensively by troops in a lot of instances. ... And the jungle effectively aided the need to defeat enemy observation by concealing personnel, equipment and activities to say the least. On the trail, opposing forces mainly invested a great deal of their resources, time and effort in personal camouflage and in the concealment of their defences and fortifications, to decrease the danger of being easily targeted or to enable the element of surprise. At the start of the campaign, the Australians didn’t have the luxury of camouflage jungle greens which arrived later. The story goes that they were ordered to strip out of their light khaki desert uniforms and dip them into coppers of green dye, then off they went into the jungle still dripping from the novelty, whilst blending in as much as possible with their surroundings. On the other hand, the Japanese were more adept and showed their mastery of camouflage in Malaya and parts of the Pacific. In many of the battles along the trail, advancing forces were unaware of the presence of their adversary until they were literally right on top of them. This was largely due to the effective use of camouflage and concealment techniques by the defender. Apart from inflicting casualties, it aided forces to conserve their strength for that decisive blow on the enemy on the ground of their own choosing and at a time when it was most needed. 17.01.2022 Trekking Kokoda can be a daunting experience. Daunting in the sense that you’re unsure what to expect about the place, people and Kokoda in general. You’ve probably heard stories that it’s risky and not a trek for the fainthearted and the average Joe. And this also gives you goosebumps and puts you into a state of panic to be honest. But it’s like jumping out of an aircraft on your first skydiving experience.... Despite the unknowns, the good news is that the anxiety will slowly start to dissipate and eventually disappear. Adrenaline will set in which will help the nerves to begin to settle back into normality which will help you appreciate and enjoy the challenge. And a big part of this which helps tremendously is knowing you’re part of a fantastic team and a great bunch of blokes who’ll be taking care of you every step of the way. 13.01.2022 Kokoda teaches us resilience and toughness. It exposes our strengths and weaknesses, and brings out the best in us. But more importantly, it gives us our identity, thanks to our war heroes. Of who we are, and where we’ve come from. Of purpose, oneness and belonging.... This we tell in our tales to our children and grandchildren. And to the generations to come so to keep the legacy alive. 11.01.2022 Kokoda plateau today: 03-11-2020 On 03-11-1942, the Australian flag was raised on the Kokoda plateau after Kokoda was recaptured. The flag raising ceremony was officiated by GEN G. Vasey, commander of the Australian forces on the Kokoda Trail. Kokoda was important because it had the only airstrip between Port Moresby and the Japanese base at Buna. Much to their surprise, the Australians discovered that the strip hadn’t been occupied by the Japanese and had fallen into disrepa...ir. Work parties were immediately organised to get the strip up and running so aircrafts could fly in more supplies, ammo and necessities required for fighting further north at Oivi and Gorari. 10.01.2022 Over the years, we’ve had so many kids accompany their parents and families on the Kokoda Trail, like young Caitlin from Newcastle, NSW, seen here strapping on her hiking boots. 10.01.2022 Believe it or not, Kokoda is a name that’s been synonymous with people for many centuries. People was what made the Kokoda Trail so significant, and still does to this day. Before the arrival of colonial powers in Papua, the place was heavily inhabited by fearsome local tribes.... Then came along white men like surveyor Henry Hamilton Stuart-Russell, whose job it was to try and find a path from Port Moresby to the north coast of Papua in 1899. Stuart-Russell’s expedition would discover gold in the process, paving the way for the arrival of British and Anglo-Australian prospectors into the area in what would later become the Yodda Kokoda goldfields. Then the Second World War got to its doorsteps. The jungle along the Kokoda Trail was suddenly being swarmed by hundreds of Australian and Japanese troops. Between July - November 1942, the Australians were entangled in a series of fierce battles to try to prevent the Japanese from capturing Port Moresby and isolating Australia from the United States. And fast forward to today, and the Kokoda Trail hasn’t lost its mojo with people. With the exception of 2020, every year, thousands of trekkers take to the trek to experience first hand the challenge troops put themselves into when fighting during the Kokoda campaign, some even paying their respects at the graves of the hundreds who never made it home to their loved ones. 10.01.2022 We think your plans to travel to PNG to walk the infamous Kokoda Track is more becoming a reality with the announcement by Qantas to begin selling international tickets from 01 July 2021. Qantas’s announcement comes amidst the ongoing uncertainty surrounding international travel. The federal government continues to warn Australians to rethink their overseas travel plans whilst the country’s borders continues to remain shut. ... Nevertheless, this shouldn’t prevent you from beginning to work on your travel plans to do Kokoda. Doing so will help you deal with its materialisation, or otherwise, any in-contingencies if they do occur. Qantas said its decision is based on its best projection of a vaccine rollout. The airline also plans to provide avenues for refunds, rebookings or travel credits if flights are cancelled. Its international ticket sales will include countries such as the USA and the UK including Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. We highly anticipate this will also include countries in the Indo-Pacific and in our neighbourhood such as PNG with return flights into Port Moresby centred around an established travel bubble and strict covid-19 protocols. Currently, New Zealand is the only country that Qantas is flying to. In a more promising development, Scott Morrison announced today a vaccine could be rolled out in a matter of weeks, with high priority groups to be the first to receive the jab. As far as international travel is concerned, Qantas boss Allan Joyce said last year that for quarantine-free travel to resume, a wide distribution of a covid vaccine is required. We’ll continue to keep you updated with any related travel news to help you plan your travel. 07.01.2022 On this day... in 1942, the last of three hard-fought battles finally stopped the Japanese advance along the Kokoda Trail at Ioribaiwa. The three days of fighti...ng centred on a high feature known as Ioribaiwa Ridge, south of Ofi Creek on the Kokoda Trail, in the Territory of Papua. Although the Japanese were successful in pushing the Australians back in the centre of their defensive position on the trail, heavy fighting on the flanks of the position brought the Japanese attack to a standstill. Following the battle, the Australian commander, Brigadier Kenneth Eather, commanding perceiving that the attack could not be held any further and that Ioribaiwa Ridge was unsuited to launching a counter-attack, withdrew his force back to Imita Ridge. The Japanese, however, had reached the limit of their supply line, and strategic factors and reverses elsewhere forced the Japanese commander, Major General Tomitaro Horii, to pursue a more defensive approach in Papua and New Guinea. As a result, in October the Japanese began to withdraw towards their beachheads at BunaGona, with the Australians in pursuit. During the Battle of Ioribaiwa, 49 Australians were killed and 121 were wounded. Lest we forget. 01.01.2022 On this day... in 1939, a fortnight after the outbreak of World War II, the Australian government announced the mobilisation of the part-time Militia, along wit...h the formation of the Second Australian Imperial Force for overseas service. As with the original AIF in World War I, the Second AIF was raised for overseas service because the Militia were only allowed to be deployed on Australian territory. Of course, this included the Australian territories of Papua and New Guinea, and after the Japanese entered the war, Militia units fought with distinction in those areas. The Militia was initially called up in two drafts of 40,000 men for one month's training, and was a mix of volunteers and conscripts. By the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, there were over a quarter of a million men in the Militia in seven divisions. Soon after, the term "Militia" went out of vogue and it became better known as the the "Citizens Military Force" (CMF). In 1943, a law was passed that meant that if 65% or more of a given CMF unit had volunteered for overseas service, the unit could be transferred to the Second AIF. It was also decreed that CMF units could serve anywhere south of the Equator within the South West Pacific Area, which saw CMF units fight in the Dutch East Indies (modern Indonesia). More than 200,000 CMF members transferred to the Second AIF during the war, but 32 CMF battalions served in three divisions in several major campaigns. Lest we forget.
