25.01.2022 HeliScope PNG and partners TE PNG have been delivering Communication Hubs positioned along 23 sites along the Kokoda Track as a joint initiative between the Gov...t of PNG and Australian Govt. They will be used by the Kokoda Track Authority for communications along the track, including their bases at both Owers Corners and Kokoda. They will also be used by the local villagers for communications between themselves. As there is no mobile phone coverage along the track, this is the only communications system (other than satellite phone or HF radio for the Health System) available to both rangers, villagers and trekkers. The system is solar powered, with backup battery. It also includes 10 USB ports for charging of mobile phones and cameras. One side of the hub is currently a whiteboard/message board for the villagers. This will be updated in the future with information about the village, both its history and also the part the village or local villagers played in the war. This will provide information to trekkers that is not currently available, adding to the experience.
