21.01.2022 Late Milton Lay - time of reflection for me. In 2008 we welcomed to PNG a group of 38 who were all there because of one man, Milton Lay. I can recall when booking the group he asked for a group discount. A discount was offered and agreed, but Milton turned around and asked me what I felt Kokoda needed. I suggested a community hall. Immediately Milton contacted PNG Forest Products and with the discount he ordered a hall but not before he asked me how I suggested he go abo...ut the donation. Russell Eroro got involved and together they flew over to Kokoda to meet with landowners as a decision had to be made as to where to put the hall. It was decided it should be built at Koko Village. Later the Kokoda Track Memorial guys who built the archways at both ends of the track got involved as Milton Lay was their friend. They agreed to help build the hall and so the journey began. That was the start of the Kokoda College built by the Kokoda Track Authority - KTF. A big thank you to Milton Lay for his initiative and for laying the foundation of his idea. In 2008, Milton did not walk with the group but he flew to PNG and with his friends arranged everything with us and was in PNG to send them off and welcome them back off the track. 20.01.2022 I was advised this week of the passing of Milton Lay who was A PASSIONATE advocate for the Shoalhaven community, who drove a number of major local projects. This is how the late Milton Lay is being remembered. Mr Lay passed away recently after suffering a massive stroke after undergoing heart valve surgery. 04.01.2022 This day in history, Christmas Day 1942. George Silk's image of Dick Whittington and Raphael Oimbari, taken on Christmas Day, 1942. It was mid-afternoon, and N...ew Zealand photographer George Silk was walking along the track towards the beachhead battles when he saw the column of wounded men coming towards him. He stepped to the side, quietly took the photograph of Whittington and Oimbari, and the procession moved along. Silk wasn't going to disturb them, but at the last minute ran back to get the wounded soldier's name. The photograph would become one of the most iconic images of Australians in the Second World War. Although Silk documented the soldier's name, Raphael Oimbari wasn't identified until after the war. "His identity was unknown until the 1970s when 'Dick' Whittington's widow put a call out in the media," he said. "Whittington had recovered from his wound and returned to his unit, but he died from scrub typhus just seven weeks later. "His widow wanted to identify who the Papuan was in the photograph so that she could give her thanks. "Through her work, they were able to find out the identity of the carrier, and Raphael Oimbari went on to become quite a strong advocate for remembering the Papuan contribution to the war effort through the 1980s and into the 1990s." After he was identified in the 1970s, Oimbari was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire within the Papua and New Guinea honours system and became a figurehead for the carriers.
