20.01.2022 We all know about the healing and rejuvenating benefits of massage on the body’s Muscular System but did you know about the positive physiological effects of massage on other Systems of the body? You may be surprised to know that massage: - Aids the Circulatory System by improving general circulation as blood passes more rapidly through tissue being massaged. Massage dilates blood vessels which can assist in decreasing blood pressure. - Aids the Digestive System by stimulatin...g digestive organs and peristalsis which improves digestion and can increase the absorption of fat by the small intestines. - Aids the Endocrine System by increasing general circulation and transportation of hormones. - Aids the Integumentary System by sending messages to the brain through sensory receptors in the skin to relax the entire body. Through this system trust is established if healing is to take place both physically and psychologically. - Aids the Lymphatic System by assisting the flow of lymph throughout the body, thereby assisting the immune system to prevent disease. In chronic inflammatory conditions in which fibrosis (scar tissue) is sure to advance if tissue fluid and lymph remain stagnant, massage is important in moving lymph and fluid. - Aids the Nervous System by relaxing or stimulating nerves depending upon the type of treatment. It has a biofeedback effect, giving the mind more information as to where tension is being held in the body. Massage releases spasms of tissue surrounding the spinal cord which can take the strain off nerves. - Aids the Respiratory System by loosening the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) and freeing the rib cage to allow greater chest expansion, thereby deeper breathing and thus increased oxygen to all cells. Massage encourages deeper breathing and a more complete breath through relaxation. - Aids the Skeletal System by improving muscular balance and thus skeleton alignment (contracted muscles can pull bones out of alignment). Massage can prevent adhesions from forming and can break down adhesions. These adhesions can form between ligaments and bones, can alter a joint and limit range of motion. Adhesions can form reparative tissue, but not flexible, and massage can create a mobile scar.
14.01.2022 Pain in your lower back and hips? Feeling anxious or like you are always in survival mode? I had a client visit a few days ago who is a powerlifter. He was experiencing pain in his lower back, hips and knees. The tips of his knees were particularly tender. He explained that he had recently started a new program at the gym and that he thought he had injured his back whilst training however, he could not pinpoint any one event that could have resulted in this extreme pain. The... pain that this client was experiencing is very common, particularly in powerlifters/ crossfitters and those who practice yoga. It can however, be caused by a number of movements, even by seemingly benign activities such as driving or being sedentary for long periods of time. It is often due to muscular tightness that originates in the psoas muscle, a small muscle that attaches to the anterior of the lower lumbar spine, extending through the pelvis. From there the muscle that runs vertically down the centre of the thigh the rectus femoris can also be affected. This pain can continue further down the leg, to the patella tendon on the tip of the knee cap. Other muscles in this region of the body which are often also tight as a result of these types of activities, are the glutes, QL and ITB. In terms of the mind/ body connection, the psoas muscle, where this pain and tension originates, when released, is believed to assist in reducing feelings of anxiety and helps to counter the often over-active sympathetic nervous system. At Kokua Massage, we have developed a signature treatment which targets the release of these areas and more through a combination of Remedial and Traditional Hawaiian Lomi techniques. Some of these techniques have been practiced for many hundreds of years in the Mid Pacific. You don’t have to be an athlete or a Yogi to require regular maintenance of your body. Come and experience the Kokua difference! Aloha

05.01.2022 Massage to treat the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis- May 30, World MS Day 2019. Often people think of massage as an indulgent activity reserved for special occasions however, for those with a diagnosis of MS it can be part of an essential therapy plan. MS is a condition that affects the myelin sheath, the fatty tissue that protects nerve cells. In cases of MS, attacks by the body’s immune system on the myelin sheath are commonly referred to as flare-ups. Flare-ups damage the... body and result in scarring as the body attempts to repair. This scarring may cause muscles to ‘freeze up’, feel tired without use and it can block electrical impulses which tell the muscle to move in a smooth motion. Simple daily tasks such as walking, eating and sitting at a desk can become problematic for those with MS. Massage offers significant benefits to MS patients and has been reported to reduce pain, improve muscle and joint flexibility/ range of motion and increase circulation. In my career as a Remedial Massage and Lomi Therapist I have been fortunate enough to have worked with many people living with a diagnosis of MS. I have conducted my own research and have employed a system of trial and error always requesting honest feedback from my clients and adjusting my treatments accordingly to develop a custom massage for each individual. Come and see us at Kokua Massage for a treatment tailored to your personal needs. With our current special continuing at just $60/hr, massage need not be an indulgence reserved for special occasions. Call now to book 0416 882 268. Mahalo
04.01.2022 Quick Reminder - Nerve Locks can suddenly develop in you OR re-ignite your pains after being pain free for a while commonly due to .... 1. Your muscles being TO...O tight, you're not stretching enough 2. Your muscles being TOO fatigued & you pushed through it without adequate recovery 3. Your body is very stressed emotionally & physically then you did a silly thing or a massive workout 4. You lifted something that you shouldn't have 5. You did an activity that you either haven't done in a LONG time, or NEVER BEFORE eg. I moved house lifting heavy boxes or I fell over or I was asked to play cricket for my mates team and I haven't played since I was 20 6. You worked out hard whilst your body was under duress ie. sickness, fatigue, infections, alcohol, sleep deprivation, post long flight or car drive, emotional stress See more
