25.01.2022 Always was, always will be.

25.01.2022 It's that time of year again and after the year we have had, we definitely deserve a wine or 2......(or 10?)! If you are a panadol popper after a night out, this tip is for you! Paracetamol (Panadol) and alcohol (especially when in larger amounts) can significantly affect the liver when taken together. ... To avoid any damage to your liver and to mitigate the effects of a boozy night, supplementing with B vitamins is a much safer and more effective way of reducing the side effects of alcohol overconsumption. Alcohol significantly depletes B vitamins due to its diuretic effect which leads to those dreaded hangover symptoms. Studies have shown that supplementing with a B complex before and after drinking alcohol can significantly reduce hangover symptoms by replenishing B vitamin stores. Hit the link in my bio to purchase my fave B complex! You can thank me later See more

25.01.2022 Stressed? Having trouble sleeping? It may be time to start taking some magnesium! Stress (both mental & physical) quickly depletes our body of magnesium. Magnesium is also a vital nutrient for a healthy stress response. Talk about a vicious cycle! Low levels of magnesium can contribute to conditions such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. Supplementing with a good quality magnesium can help reduce anxiety symptoms and help improve your quality of sleep.... When choosing a magnesium supplement I recommend looking for a product that contains magnesium bisglycinate as low quality forms of magnesium such as magnesium oxide can cause unwanted symptoms of digestive upset and diarrhoea. Need some magnesium in your life? Head on over to my online dispensary or book an appointment to find out what magnesium supplement would be best for you (link in bio).

25.01.2022 FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTING When our gut isn't happy, oftentimes it can be our body reacting to foods we are feeding it, leading to symptoms such as bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. When talking about food intolerances it is important to note the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance. ... A food allergy is an IgE mediated immune reaction to a certain food (eg peanuts). Think E for emergency as this reaction occurs within seconds to minutes and can often be life threatening. A food intolerance on the other hand is an IgG mediated immune reaction and a reaction to a particular food can occur up to 72 hours after ingestion, making food intolerances very difficult to pinpoint. This type of reaction is not life threatening and the signs can vary from digestive upset, skin issues, fatigue, pain, brain fog & weight gain (but the list goes on!). To make it easier for you to get to the bottom for your digestive issues, food intolerance testing is now available to purchase in my online store! This super easy at-home IgG Food Map Kit tests for 190 different foods and includes a complimentary 15-minute online consultation with me to discuss your results and a plan moving forward. 24.01.2022 HYPOTHYROID AND CONSTIPATION // As you have learnt from my previous posts, constipation can be caused by a variety of different reasons but can often be a symptom of a larger issue. Constipation is a common symptom seen in hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism occurs when our thyroid gland is under-functioning and causes many of the body's functions to slow down. Hypothyroidism can slow down and weaken the force of the muscle contractions in the bowel which are needed to keep you r...egular. For people with constipation caused by under-functioning thyroids, no amount of fibre, water or laxatives are going to improve or get to the root cause of what is causing your constipation. Often people go years with these symptoms without every getting their thyroid tested or when they do, they often get told the thyroid function is normal. WHY? The way I look at your blood tests is very different from the way a doctor would look at your blood test. There is nothing wrong with this, doctors are trained to look for disease whilst naturopaths are trained to look for optimal wellness and both are very valid and necessary for our patients care. Because I am looking for optimal levels, my ranges for testing are much more narrow to take into account those with suboptimal functioning thyroids, not just those who already have the disease. This is because I don't want to wait until you have the disease to try and turn back the clock, I want to prevent you from getting to that end of the range in the first place! With thyroid conditions especially, symptoms often show way before your levels go off the charts so it is important to address it before it gets to that point. If you are suffering with constipation and just can't seem to get the bottom of why this is happening, I encourage you to make an appointment with your GP to get some thyroid testing done. If your levels are between 1 and 2 then your constipation may be caused by other underlying factors, however, if you fall outside this narrow range, it may be worth making an appointment to get this addressed ASAP! #thyroid #hypothyroid #thyroidtesting #constipation #guthealth #vegannaturopath #digestivehealth #bloating #gut

24.01.2022 THE LIVER & CONSTIPATION // Do normal people have a favourite organ or is that just a naturopath thing? I'm sure a lot of naturopaths would agree with me when I say my favourite organ would definitely be the liver! What can't the liver do?! ... In terms of digestion, the liver plays a role in various different process. One of the many jobs of the liver is the production of bile. Bile, in particular, plays a major role in keeping everything 'running smoothly'. Bile is a digestive fluid that is made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder and its main role is aiding the digestion and absorption of fats. We also think of bile as 'nature's laxative' as bile can also help improve motility in the bowel and therefore help to get things moving along and improve symptoms of constipation. Coming up: Foods that help improve liver function and the production of bile! #detox #liverdetox #livercleanse #cleanse #digestion #digestivehealth #guthealth #naturopath #naturopathy #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist #glutenfree #nutrition #bloating #foodintolernace #gutbacteria #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #guthealing #guthealingdiet #holisticnutritionist #clinicalnutritionist #veganholisticnutritionist See more

23.01.2022 Everything is super important. Until you are sick. Then you realise that there was only ever one thing that was important. Your health. But nonetheless we borrow from the bank of our health, taking loans on stress and sleepless nights to pay for something that doesn’t really matter.

22.01.2022 THE MAGIC OF PROBIOTICS // Having a healthy & thriving gut microbiome is essential for human health. When your gut microbiome is poor in richness and diversity (explained in my previous post) this can give rise to the development of chronic illness. Probiotics (as defined by the WHO) are defined as ‘living microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits on the host’. ... Along with the right amounts, the right strain is just as, if not more important. The three main genus types of probiotics found in supplements are Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces. Each strain within those genus have been shown to have different effects on not only the gut by other systems within the body as well, including the immune system, the respiratory system, the skin and the brain. Put simply, when the right type of probiotic strain is given to the right person in the right amount, they can have a profound impact on the state of their health. Supplementation with any old probiotic off the shelf would not be advised as this can, in some cases, throw off the balance of the gut microbiome even more. Probiotics are not cheap so when it comes to manipulating the balance of the gut bacteria I 100% recommend getting specific and individualised advice from someone who is trained in the area (aka naturopaths!). #digestivehealth #guthealth #digestion #naturopath #naturopathy #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist #glutenfree #nutrition #bloating #foodintolernace #gutbacteria #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #kollectivewellness #guthealing #guthealingdiet #holisticnutritionist #clinicalnutritionist #veganholisticnutritionist #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria

22.01.2022 FIBRE... MY SECOND FAVOURITE F WORD // Alright, so you've found out what the perfect poop is (see my previous posts) and you've realised that your's aren't exactly ideal... now what? I'd like to introduce you to my second favourite f word... FIBRE.... Fibre is so underrated in my opinion so by the end of this post, I hope that you will start to love fibre as much as I do Fibre is more than just that weird, bland powder found at the chemist... (not sexy). Fibre is found abundantly and only in bright, colourful, whole plant foods (much more sexy ). Although by definition, fibre is indigestible as it can't be absorbed into the body, the role it plays in not only the functioning of our digestive system but our overall health, makes this nutrient essential for optimal wellness. As so beautifully said by Dr Greger himself 'Fibre is like comfort food for your colon' (so sexy! ). Fibre is essential for not only bulking our stools and making them easier to pass, but it also feeds the trillions on bacteria that reside in our gut. Feeding these critters and making sure that they are happy and healthy is the key to a healthy life! The daily MINIMUM amount of fibre that is needed to keep your gut bugs happy is about 25g however aiming for about 45g is optimal. If your gut isn't used to that much fibre my advice is to take it sloooooooooow and work up to that over a few weeks to avoid any digestive discomfort. I've got plenty more posts about my love for fibre coming up so if you arent quite convinced just yet, stay tuned x #fibre #highfibrediet #plantbaseddiet #plantbased #plantbasednutrition #plantbasednaturopath #guthealth #guthealing #vegandiet #vegannutrition #vegannutritionist #vegannaturopath #plantbasednaturopath #digestion #digestivehealth #bloating #bloatingremedies #drgreger #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria #naturopath #naturopathy #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre #guthealingdiet #holisticnutritionist #clinicalnutritionist See more

22.01.2022 FERRITIN IS NOT THE ONLY MARKER OF IRON STATUS// When it comes to analysing iron blood tests, there are a few markers in your blood that I look at. You may be surprised to know that ferritin is not the first one on my list. As iron stores (ferritin) are the last place for our iron to go when we are deficient, there are a few markers that I look at first to see what your iron status really is. Hemoglobin (Hb) ... Haemoglobin is found in red blood cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen around the body. If your haemoglobin levels are low this is called anaemia and can be caused a deficiency of iron. Transferrin This marker tells me how hungry your body is for iron. It also tells me how many 'iron taxis' are being made to help improve the transportation of iron. Is your transferrin high indicating you are making lots of taxis and are hungry for iron or is it low indicating that you are full and don't need any more? Transferrin Saturation % (TSat%) TSat% tells me how full (saturated) your taxis are with iron. How much iron is being transported around your body to where it needs to go? Too high levels and too low levels are just as concerning so I am looking for you to be right in the middle of my optimal range. I got into depth on all of these markers plus many more in my soon to be released ebook on how to Optimise Your Iron! To be one of the first to know when this ebook will be release head on over to the link in my bio! If you have had blood tests done recently and want them to be assessed by someone trained in looking for optimal levels, check out my new Vegan Blood Test Analysis Package! See more

21.01.2022 PERIORAL DERMATITIS // You may not have heard of it before but I can guarantee a lot of you have most likely experienced it at some point. Perioral (around the mouth) dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) is characterised by redness, papules, pustules and sometimes dry scaly skin around the mouth and nasolabial folds and is very commonly seen in women in their 20's and 30's. ... CAUSES Hypersensitivity to sodium laurel sulphate (SLS) found in skincare Fragrance (including essential oils) in skincare Fluoride containing oral hygiene products Impaired skin barrier function Activation of the innate immune system Altered microflora Intestinal hyperpermeability (aka leaky gut) Food Intolerances (gluten & dairy) Steroid creams and steroid nasal sprays Hormonal fluctuations Stress (coz what doesn't stress aggravate!) 21.01.2022 NUTRITION HACK // Chickpeas are a skin superfood! They are high in folate (B9) which is essential for healthy skin cell production and optimal skin cell turnover. Folate also works as an antioxidant to help fight free radical damage and slows the aging process. ... When it comes to chickpeas think hummus, curries (I posted a delicious pumpkin & chickpea curry not too long ago so go check it out!) and homemade falafels! Other sources of folate include dark leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, citrus, beans and legumes, nuts, seeds and beets! Are you a chickpea fan? 20.01.2022 LETS TALK ABOUT POO! Yep, a naturopaths favourite topic! I often forget that talking openly about bowel motions isn't exactly normal for the everyday person... oops, soz! But our bowel motions are one of the most important clues into the state of our gut and our overall health so I can't help but talk about it! First off, let's chat about the 'perfect' bowel motion. Often times, people don't know what their bowel motions are supposed to be like and constipation (or di...arrhea) can feel like your 'normal'. The perfect poo should: - Be medium brown in colour (variations can indicate bacterial imbalances, liver and gallbladder issues and digestive dysfunction that needs to be investigated) - Be a long, soft log, the same consistency as soft-serve ice-cream, (sorry to put you off ice-cream for life!) - Be smooth, easy to pass and quick (sitting on the toilet for more than a few minutes isn't normal! ) -Feel complete and like you have nothing else left in the tank! - Leave you feeling amazing once passed (ever seen your dog to the happy poo dance? Yep, that's how you should be feeling too ) If you are having 1-2 of these types of bowel motions per day then, congratulations! You have perfect poo, so keep doing what you're doing! If not, stay tuned for some common reasons why your poops may not be ideal and ways to improve your bowel motions so you too can experience the perfect poo (I want you all doing the happy poo dance! ) #digestivehealth #guthealth #digestion #naturopath #naturopathy #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist #glutenfree #nutrition #bloating #foodintolernace #gutbacteria #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #kollectivewellness #guthealing #guthealingdiet #holisticnutritionist #clinicalnutritionist #veganholisticnutritionist See more

15.01.2022 THE ULTIMATE BREAKFAST TO COMBAT CONSTIPATION // When it comes to relieving constipation, ensuring you are getting in enough fibre is key. Here is my favourite breakfast recipe for keeping everything running smoothly.... I have to be honest and tell you I never cook with measurements so if these don't work, I encourage you to play around to find what works for you and your taste buds You will need (roughly): 1/2 cup rolled oats 1 cup plant-based milk a dash of cinnamon 1 ripe banana a sprinkle of coconut sugar 1 tsp of coconut oil a sprinkle of hemp seeds a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds a few blueberries To make: Put oats, milk and cinnamon into a saucepan and cook on medium-low heat until your desired texture (about 5-10 mins) While that's cooking, chop up your banana and put into a frying pan along with some coconut oil and some cinnamon and cook until the banana is soft. Once the oats are ready, pop into a bowl and top with the cooked banana, a sprinkle of coconut sugar, some hemp and pumpkin seeds and a few blueberries to add some colour and extra fibre. Done! Super easy, delicious, gut-loving breakfast! Don't forget to tag me @kollectivewellness in your recreations See more

14.01.2022 4 WAYS TO INCORPORATE MINDFULNESS INTO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE // 1. SET THE SCENE Dim the lights, turn on your essential oil diffuser and light some candles. Starting your routine with this ritual lets your brain know that it is time to slow down and makes it easier over time for your body to relax. ... 2. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CHOICES Mindfulness incorporates being aware of your choices of what we put in and on our bodies. Choose skincare that is natural, gentle and nourishing and take the time to appreciate what these ingredients are doing to your skin. 3. SLOW DOWN Make every movement slow and intentional and if the mind starts to drift bring it back to the present moment. Slow down your breathing and notice the sensations and textures of your oils and lotions. Take the time to massage each product into the skin and notice the texture and appearance of your skin underneath your fingertips. Give thanks to your skin, tell it how much you appreciate it and treat your routine as an act of self-love. 4. MASKING x MEDITATION Once per week, pop on a face mask (go check out my DIY hydrating face mask) and instead of scrolling through insta, pop on a guided meditation (I like Headspace or Calm) for the ultimate relaxation treat. How's that for multi-tasking! 14.01.2022 HOW TO GET THE MOST ACCURATE BLOOD TEST RESULTS // The components of our blood are constantly changing and can vary depending on a multitude of different factors. Here are some factors that can distort your blood results and ways to make sure your tests are as accurate as possible.... 1. Fasting Whether your GP has specified that you fast or not, bloods are always more accurate whilst fasting. The ideal fasting time is between 5-12 hours (ideally overnight) but no longer. 2. Exercise As exercise is a form of transient stress on the body, this can temporarily distort blood levels. Avoiding exercise 48 hours before your test is best for accurate readings. 3. Supplements It is best to avoid (if possible) nutritional supplements (eg. iron) 3 days prior to your blood test to avoid falsely elevated results. 4. Alcohol & Dehydration Large volumes of alcohol in the 48 hours leading up to your test can impact your blood levels. Ensuring you are adequately hydrated for your test is also important for accurate readings. For more info on how to get the most accurate blood results, sign up for my Vegan Blood Test Analysis Package for your complimentary ebook!

13.01.2022 THE ULTIMATE FOODS FOR DETOXIFICATION // 'Detox' is definitely a trendy buzz word right now. Forget detox teas that clean out your entire insides ... If you really want to improve your detoxification you have to turn to foods that nourish your liver, the ultimate detoxifier! When it comes to foods that are nourishing to the liver, think bitter foods like lemon juice and bitter greens such as broccoli and rocket as well as foods high in antioxidants to help protect the... liver from oxidative stress (berries, garlic, turmeric). A really simple way of nourishing your liver is by adding 1 tsp of lemon juice and/or 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drinking before meals or adding a side of lightly steamed greens with a drizzle of lemon juice to your main meals. Consuming 1 serve of berries daily can help up your antioxidant intake and keep your liver happy! #liverhealth #livercleanse #detox #detoxification #detoxfoods #foodasmedicine #guthealing #guthealingdiet #holisticnutritionist #clinicalnutritionist #veganholisticnutritionist #naturopath #vegannaturopath #vegannutrition #vegannutritionist #shoppingtip #foodhack #nutritionhack #healthyhack #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #digestivehealth #guthealth #digestion #guthealing

13.01.2022 Just like the earth, we too have internal an internal day and night. This biorhythm is dictated by two hormones; cortisol & melatonin. Cortsiol is the hormone that (when balanced) helps us to feel refreshed and ready to take on our day. It is highest in the morning and naturally declines throughout the day. Things that can dysregulate cortisol include stress and caffeine. If you are feeling sluggish in the morning, before your reach for your morning coffee, sit in direct sunl...ight with your face towards the sun. This signals to your brain to release cortisol to help you to feel more energised. Melatonin is our sleep hormone. It is on an opposite rhythm to cortisol and is naturally highest at night. Things that can disrupt melatonin secretion at night include stress and blue light exposure on our phones. I recommend to turn on 'night mode' on your devices around sunset so we don't disrupt this delicate hormonal balance and to wind down from your day with some yoga or a sleep meditation. If you feel like your sleep/wake cycle is a little out of whack feel free to get in touch to see how I can help!

11.01.2022 VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE // It's also the key to optimal gut health! If you are one of those people who eats the same thing day in day out for weeks on end, this one is for you! ... When it comes to our diet and our gut microbiome, variety and diversity are key! A healthy and resilient gut microbiome relies on high richness and biodiversity and the way to promote this is through a varied & predominantly plant-based diet. Gut microbiome richness and diversity are two important concepts worth taking a second to fully understand and both are equally as important as the other. Richness is the total number of bacterial species in your gut microbiome. Diversity is the amount of individual bacteria from each of the bacterial species present in your gut microbiome. To diversify your microbes you need to feed them diverse food. Eating a wide variety of different plant foods each week can help improve the diversity of your gut. Pro tip: Include 1 new fruit or vegetable into your diet each week and aim to include a minimum of 30 different fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, beans and legumes into your diet each week! An easy way to track this is to write down every food you eat daily throughout the week without doubling up any foods that you consume twice during the week. Can you reach 30 by the end of next week? #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria #healthtip #nutritiontip #nutritionhack #foodhack #veganhack #healthyvegan #vegandiet #vegannutrition #vegannutritionist #vegannaturopath #naturopathy #guthealth #guthealing #digestivehealth #plantbaseddiet #healthyhack #plantfoods #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre

09.01.2022 SOLUBLE vs INSOLUBLE FIBRE // There are two types of fibre found in plant-based foods: soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre is the jelly type fibre that turns into a gel when mixed with water. Think of soluble fibre as a mop for your digestive system, as it attracts and binds to things like cholesterol making it great for those wanting to manage their cholesterol levels naturally. The mucilages found in soluble fibre are also great for soothing an irritated and in...flamed gastric lining seen in conditions such as gastritis, reflux and IBD. Soluble fibre is found in foods such as psyllium, oats, apples, citrus fruits and potatoes. This type of fibre has prebiotic qualities and is needed to feed the bugs in our gut to keep them happy. Insoluble fibre is the roughage part of fruit and vegetables (think peels and seeds). Think of insoluble fibre like a scrub for your digestive system. It helps to add bulk to stools and helps to regulate our bowel motions to avoid blockages. *Pro tip: Avoid peeling your veggies as much as you can, that peel is the good shit (literally). #fibre #highfibrediet #plantbaseddiet #plantbased #plantbasednutrition #plantbasednaturopath #guthealth #guthealing #vegandiet #vegannutrition #vegannutritionist #vegannaturopath #plantbasednaturopath #digestion #digestivehealth #bloating #bloatingremedies #drgreger #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria #solublefibre #insolublefibre #healthfood #nutritionhack #foodhack #nutritiontip #healthyfoodideas #IBD #bloating #refluxremedies See more

09.01.2022 TOPICAL SKINCARE ROUTINE // Looking after my skin is one of my most loved 'daily non-negotiables'. When it comes to topical skincare, I am a huge advocate for keeping it simple and using gentle products with minimal ingredients.... The staple routine looks like: Cleanse - Skin B5 Acne Botanical Cleansing Mousse (now available to purchase in my online store!) Hydrate - I use my all-time favourite oil, Jojoba Oil! (also available in my online store ) Moisturise - Currently obsessed with The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA Protect - I then top it off with an SPF every morning. I am still on the hunt for a good yet affordable SPF so if you have any recommendations hit me up! I have also recently started experimenting with active skincare ingredients and seen a huge improvement in my skin! Adding actives into your routine can help address specific issues in your skin such as acne, anti-ageing and hydration. Currently, I am using: Niacinamide - A topical form of B3 to help balance sebum production and reduce skin congestion. Lactic Acid - A gentle chemical exfoliant that loosens the bonds between dead skin cells to even skin tone and improve the appearance of large pores. Hyaluronic Acid - Offers intense hydration to help promote skin regeneration and reduce fine lines. When treating the skin, it is so important to address the causes both internally and externally. I love working along side dermal clinicians and corneotherapists and often find that clients get the best results when working with a multi-disciplinary team to address their skin health from all aspects. - pinterest. #dermalscience #dermalclinician #corneotherapist #skincareroutine #theordinary #skinoils #holisticskincare #postpillacne #isoacne #isobreakouts #thepillforacne #pimpleadvice #vegannaturopath #skinnaturopath #plantbased #naturopathy #naturalskincare #veganskincare #organicskincare #naturalskinremedies #healingacne #clearskindiet #dietforacne #herbsforacne #naturalskinhealth #hormonalacne #acnetreatment #adultacne #cysticacne #oilyskin See more

08.01.2022 TIPS FOR SILENCING THE 'MUSICAL FRUIT // Here are my go-to tips for making beans and legumes a little easier to digest. 1. WASH THEM THOROUGHLY ... When using canned beans and legumes, choose BPA-free cans and ensure you wash them thoroughly under cold running water to help remove some of the sugars that can lead to digestive upset. 2. SOAK THEM WITH A SLICE OF LEMON Soak uncooked, dried beans or lentils for about 36 hours in filtered water with a wedge of lemon. Leave soaking until you start to see a few bubbly patches on top of the water. The lemon juice helps to accelerate the breakdown of phytic acid which allows the nutrients to be more bioavailable. Strain the beans and cook in fresh filtered water with a teaspoon of baking soda. Bring to the boil and simmer on low for 1 hour. Strain them and enjoy any way you wish. 3. COOK THEM WELL Cook beans and legumes thoroughly until soft to allow the proper breakdown of the oligosaccharides (the sugars that can cause bloating). Cooking beans and legumes in a pressure cooker is a great way of speeding up this process. 4. ADD A BAY LEAF Cooking your beans with a bay leaf can help reduce bloating due to its carminative action in the digestive system. 5. SPROUT THEM Sprouted beans & legumes are even easier to digest. Sprouting tends to enhance the nutritional value by breaking down certain anti-nutrients including phytic acid which locks up important minerals and inhibits our digestive enzymes leading to indigestion and intestinal gas. #beans #veganprotein #digestiveproblems #bloating #bloatingremedy #veganbloating #veganproblems #sproutedbeans #digestivehealth #guthealth #digestion #naturopath #naturopathy #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist foodintolernace #gutbacteria #constipation #naturalremedies #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #highfibre #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #foodhack #nutritionhack #healthyhack #foodasmedicine

08.01.2022 SKIN & SUPPLEMENTS // When it comes to holistic skincare, I am a huge advocate for using food as medicine. The food we eat can literally make or break our skin. When working with me you will learn exactly what foods to avoid and which foods can help to heal acne from the inside out. However, sometimes we need to bring in the big guns. After periods of improper nourishment from our diet, nutritional deficiencies can occur and often get to the stage where no amount of skin hea...ling foods can help bring your skin back to life. This is when I reach for supplementation. However, I don't just use any old supplement. I make sure that the supplements I use are of the highest quality for maximum results. Over the counter vitamins you find at the chemist often contain low quality and poorly absorbed forms of nutrients in low doses that barely scratch the surface in terms of rebuilding nutrient stores. That is why I exclusively use practitioner-only supplements that require you to have extensive training to be able to prescribe. Practitioner-only supplements contain nutrients in their most absorbable form and in high strength therapeutic doses, allowing us to get the most out of them. When working with me in clinic, you would know that supplementation is only for a limited amount of time. You will never hear me say that you will need to stay on these supplements for the rest of your life. These supplements are used purely to assist your body's natural healing ability and to encourage it back into a state of balance. After we have built your stores back up that's when we rely on the amazing powers of food as medicine to maintain all the work we have done to give you long term and sustainable results with your skin and overall health. If you are interested to know more about practitioner-only supplements or would like some advice on whether the supplements you are currently taking are right for you, please feel free to get in touch! #supplements #nutritionalsupplements #nutritionalmedicine #skinsupplement #skinvitamins #holisticskincare #postpillacne #stressacne #isoacne #isobreakouts #thepillforacne #vegannaturopath #naturalskincare #veganskincare

08.01.2022 HORMONE TESTING 101 // Before we can delve into rebalancing your hormones, we first must find out which hormones are imbalanced. This is where hormonal testing comes into play. Each of the following tests offers us a different perspective depending on what you are looking for. The best days to test are either day 3 or day 21 depending on what hormones you are looking at. Serum/Blood Testing ... This testing is often done through a GP as it is covered by Medicare and won't cost you anything out of pocket. This often just includes the basics - oestrogen, progesterone, LH, FSH and sometimes testosterone. This tests the TOTAL amount of the hormones present in your blood and provides a 'snapshot' of what your hormones were like at the time of the test. As hormones fluctuate throughout the day, this is not always an accurate representation. Saliva Testing As inactive hormones are large molecules that cannot enter our saliva, saliva testing is mostly used to test for the levels of our active hormones. Unlike blood tests, this can tell us a lot about how your body is actually utilising the hormones that are present in the body and not just how much is there. The ease of saliva testing also allows for multiple tests to be completed to take into account the fluctuations of hormones over the course of the day. Urine/DUTCH Testing This is the method I use most in clinic. Urine samples are collected over a 24 hour period to give us the best overview of your hormones. It tests not only the amounts of our hormones but all the different types of oestrogens and androgens which can give us A LOT of information about how your body is utilising and metabolising your hormones. DUTCH testing also measures the stress hormone cortisol which can have a major impact on sex hormones and gives us some vital clues. If hormone testing is something that you may be interested in but are unsure where to start, please feel free to get in touch for a chat about which option would be best for you #hormones #hormonetesting #DUTCHtest #naturopathictesting #vegannaturopath #naturopath #naturopathy #vegannutritionist #hormonehealth #happyhormones #acnecauses #holisticskincare #postpillacne #stressacne #isoacne #isobreakouts #plantbased #naturopathy #naturalskincare #naturalskinexpert #veganskincare #organicskincare #naturalskinremedies #healingacne #clearskindiet #dietforacne #herbsforacne #naturalskinhealth #teenageacne #hormonalacne

07.01.2022 MINDFUL EATING 101 // The connection between our gut and our mind is some powerful sh*t! When this connection is strong, it can allow our digestion to function at its best and reduce unwanted digestive symptoms such as bloating, nausea, burping, constipation... you name it! Our digestive tract and our brain are connected by a network of nerve cells called the enteric nervous system, which is the largest division of our autonomic nervous system. ... The gut and the brain are in constant communication with one another to give each other cues as to what is happening in the environment both inside and outside of us, to allow us to respond appropriately. When your nervous system is stressed it tells our brain that digestion is not important right now and to focus energy elsewhere... So when we try to eat in this state, our body is not prepared to be able to fully digest what we are eating (bring on all those nasty digestive symptoms!). Below are some tips you can use to help strengthen the connection between your gut and brain for optimal digestion: - Take 5 deep breaths before eating to stimulate the vagus nerve and prepare your body to receive food - Avoid eating standing up or walking around - Don't ignore hunger signs and eat when your body is telling you (low energy, dizziness, stomach growling) - Focus on the food you are eating and not on screens/work - Put your fork down every few bites - Finish what is in your mouth before taking another bite See more

06.01.2022 CONSTIPATION AND ACNE // I could go on for days about the connection between our gut and our skin but one of the ways our skin is affected by our gut is through poor elimination (aka constipation). Our gut and our skin are two of our major eliminatory systems, meaning they are responsible for the elimination of metabolic waste products (commonly known as 'toxins') from our body, be through our poop or sweat. ... When our digestive system is not eliminating waste products from the body effectively and your bowel motions are less than ideal (see my previous posts on 'the perfect poo!') our body relies more heavily on other eliminatory systems such as the skin. When we begin to eliminate waste products through our skin, that's when follicles can become blocked and inflamed leading to acne breakouts I see it so often in clinic, girls coming to see me with troubled skin and when I ask about their digestion, 90% suffer from constipation to some degree! When treating acne, It is nearly impossible to clear your acne long term if you are not detoxifying and eliminating waste products from your body effectively. I have found amazing results with my clients by improving their elimination of waste products through the digestive system to take the pressure off their skin, to allow it to function optimally and stop the recurrence of breakouts! Does this scenario sound a little too familiar? If you have tried increasing your fibre already with no improvements to your bowels or acne, it might be time to bring in the big guns and get some individualised advice from a trained naturopath (aka yours truly ) #holisticskincare #postpillacne #isoacne #isobreakouts #skinnaturopath #clearskindiet #dietforacne #naturalskinhealth #hormonalacne #guthealth #acnetreatment #digestion #digestivehealth #guthealing #constipation #bloating #bloated #bloatingremedies #naturopath #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist #nutrition #gutbacteria #constipation #naturopathmelbourne #probiotics #veganfriendly #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednaturopath #guthealingdiet See more

05.01.2022 Recently made the switch to a vegan diet only to find that your digestion has freaked out?!?! Vegans, and particularly those who are newly transitioning to a vegan diet, can often experience digestive troubles such as bloating and general digestive upset. This can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you have transitioned to a vegan diet for the health benefits! So what causes this? ... 1. Eating too fast Take small bites and chew your food slowly to allow your body time to release digestive enzymes and stomach acid that are necessary for proper digestion. Chewing slowly also allows your brain to catch up with your stomach to receive the 'full' signal to stop you from overeating. 2. Drinking water at the wrong time Plant-based diets are high in fibre (when done right) & water is essential to move all this extra fiber through your gut, but drinking too much water too close to meals can dilute your stomach acid and digestive enzymes and prevent proper digestion. Avoid drinking water 30 mins before and after meals but make sure to get your 2-3L in between meals. 3. Limit vegan junk As tempting as it is to 'support' vegan products, doing it with your mouth is not the way to go! Processed vegan food is often high in sugar, fat and salt and low in fibre which can cause symptoms such as nausea and bloating. Coming up: Why your gut bugs are essential for healthy digestion How to include beans and legumes in your diet minus the digestive symptoms they can cause! #vegandiet #vegannutrition #veganhacks #vegantips #vegandiethacks #vegantroubles #veganhelp #vegannaturopath #vegandietician #vegannutritionist #veganism #veganise #guthealth #guthealing #digestion #digestivehealth #constipation #bloating #bloatingremedies #veganfriendly #holisticmedicine #naturalmedicine #naturalremedies #plantbaseddiet #plantbasednutrition #wfpb

04.01.2022 COULD SIBO BE CAUSING MY CONSTIPATION? // Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, aka SIBO, is like the name suggests, an overgrowth of too much or the wrong type of bacteria in the small intestine that can cause symptoms such as bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, nutrient deficiencies, fatigue, brain fog and constipation. The small intestine, unlike the large intestine, is home to only a few species of bacteria. Due to the larger amounts of bacteria in the small in...testine found in SIBO, the fermentation process happens a lot sooner and a lot higher up in the digestive system leading to the above symptoms. SIBO can be caused by a number of different reasons including poor dietary choices, poor digestive secretions and poor functioning MMC that helps sweep the small intestine of food and bacteria after meals. Breath Testing is the most common way of diagnosing SIBO and is used to measure the amount of gases produced in the digestive system to diagnose the presence of bacteria. When treating SIBO is is important to not only correct the bacterial imbalance but also the underlying causes to ensure the SIBO does not return. If you would like some more information on SIBO and how I can best support your digestive health please feel free to get in touch or book in for a FREE 10-minute Exploration Session to find out if I am the right practitioner for you! #fibre #highfibrediet #plantbaseddiet #plantbased #plantbasednutrition #plantbasednaturopath #guthealth #guthealing #vegandiet #vegannutrition #vegannutritionist #vegannaturopath #plantbasednaturopath #digestion #digestivehealth #bloating #bloatingremedies #drgreger #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria #SIBO #healthfood #nutritionhack #foodhack #nutritiontip #healthyfoodideas #IBD #refluxremedies See more

04.01.2022 FIBRE & OUR GUT BUGS // There are many different reasons you can get a flare up of digestive problem when transitioning to a vegan diet but one of the main ones is that your gut just isn't used to all that gut-loving fibre. Fibre is essential for gut health and one of the MANY reason eating a plant-based diet is beneficial for our health. But if your gut and in particular your gut bugs are not used to that much fibre, it can lead to some pretty nasty gut symptoms. ... To put it simply, your gut is home to trillions (100 trillion to be exact) bugs that are essential for our health. These bugs are classified as 'good' and 'bad' (although we do need some 'bad' bacteria in there to keep everything balanced). When our gut bugs are imbalanced and there is an overgrowth of the 'bad' bacteria, this can cause digestive issues. Our gut bugs feed on fibre and when the wrongs ones get to it first, they can produce gases that can cause bloating. This does usually get better as your bacterial community changes and in my experience, this may take a few weeks, though this is highly variable. If you are currently struggling with bloating, constipation or diarrhoea on a plant-based diet and nothing seems to be working, it may be time to get some professional help. Book yourself in for a FREE 10-minute Exploration Session and let's chat about how I can best help you! #guthealth #guthealing #fibre #highfibre #wfpb #gut #gutmicrobiome #gutbacteria #digestiontroubles #digestiveissues #digestivehealth #digestion #guthealingdiet #naturopath #vegannaturopath #vegannutritionist #vegannutritionist #plantbaseddiet #poweredbyplants #veganfriendly #vegannutrition #veganhacks #veganproblems #naturopath #naturopathy #foodasmedicine #vegandiet

03.01.2022 BENEFITS OF INDOOR PLANTS // 1. THEY PURIFY THE AIR NASA found that some plants such as the spider plant (Chlorophytun comosum) and the rubber plant (Ficus elastica) were able to remove toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene (common toxins emitted by furniture, carpet and household appliances) from the air thereby reducing our exposure. ... 2. THEY IMPROVE SLEEP QUALITY Mother in Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) is known to be one of the few plants that release oxygen into the air at night. Having this baby in your bedroom can help improve sleep quality making you feel more refreshed in the morning. 3. THEY REDUCE STRESS Studies have shown that increasing the greenery in your home and workspace can have a positive effect on stress levels and enhance productivity. 4. 03.01.2022 DEHYDRATION CONSTIPATION // Dehydration is the most common reason people experience constipation. An adequate amount of water is essential for almost all processes in our body but esspecially our bowel motions, to ensure they are soft enough to pass through our digestive system with ease. So, how much water should you be drinking? ... To be super technical... Ideal water intake (in litres) = (your weight in kg) 30. So if you weight 60kg your ideal amount of water daily is about 2L. This does not account for caffeine or alcohol intake or exercise, all of which dehydrate you so you need to account for this in your daily target. For every caffeine or alcoholic drink you consume throughout the day, it is best to replace it with about the same amount in water (roughly 1 cup or 250ml per drink). In terms of exercise, depending on how much you are sweating, roughly increase your water by about 350 ml for every half an hour that you exercise. So, if you exercise for an hour every day, add roughly 700 ml of water to your daily requirement. Water also comes in our food (about 25%) so consuming adequate amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables with a high water content will also contribute to your overall water total. To be super general, aiming for about 2-3L per day is usually enough for most people. From this calculation, my ideal consumption is around 2.6L per day. 01.01.2022 WINTER GOT YOU FEELING DRIER THAN A DESERT?! // Omega 7 (aka palmitoleic acid) is a lesser-known fatty acid that provides key building blocks for the skin and helps keep it plump and hydrated. It can banish symptoms of dryness, loss of elasticity and wrinkles by boosting collagen production, protecting against oxidative stress and enhancing the skins ability to retain moisture (essential when stuck indoors with heating and wearing a mask all day!)... Omega 7 can be found in macadamia nuts, avocado and olive oil however it is found in high quantities in Sea Buckthorn oil. This a beautiful oil that can be used internally in supplement form or topically to help protect the skin from a harsh dry climate or irritation from your mask. This oil has powerful anti-inflammatory actions to help soothe skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. I gently mix a few drops in with my jojoba oil and massage into my skin morning and night after cleansing and before moisturiser. If you would like to get your hands in this luscious oil, I am now stocking it in my online shop! 01.01.2022 HOW OUR GUT IMPACTS OUR SKIN // The gut microbiome and the integrity of the gut barrier is closely linked and regulated by specialised pathways that control inflammation. When the gut is inflamed, the immune system can release specialised pro-inflammatory cells that can travel around the body causing systemic inflammation. Due to the connection to these inflammatory pathways, the state of our gut directly impacts and influences inflammation in our skin contributing to ...the development of conditions such as acne. When our gut microbiome is imbalanced, waste products from the overgrowth of particular species of bacteria can accumulate in the skin which can impair the skin's ability to function optimally leading to acne breakouts. Addressing underlying microbiome imbalances and reducing chronic and systemic inflammation is the key to reducing acne both short and long term.
