06.01.2022 What can we do about roadside litter when #dotherightthing & #dontbeatosser isn't working? Today the Holden Rally Team - Lids4Kids boys and I stopped on the side of the Newell Highway between Coonabarabran and Moree in Lids4Kids - Central West NSW. This stretch of road was noticeably the worst we'd seen since leaving home with thousands of recyclable materials littering the roadside for nearly 100km. (It was sad enough for my birth state to give me the #nswblues ) ... Within 15 minutes, the boys had collected over 100 plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans. It barely made a dent in the 50m stretch we covered. Still, at 10c per recycled item, the boys were excited about the prospect of earning $10 from the NSW Return and Earn scheme. This cash-back incentive for people to help pick-up roadside litter soon backfired though. Once we got to Narrabri, we found out that the brand new recycling machines don't accept damaged and dirty items like the bulk collection centres do. What makes some people just throw a bottle or can out their car window? What will it take for people to voluntarily stop to help pick some of it up? Does 'Adopt a Highway' still exist? Maybe we should start "Stop, Revive, Pickup Five" (items of litter) every time you need a break on one of our beautiful outback highways? #stoprevivepickup5 #dontrubbishaustralia #dontshitinyourownnest #sanctimonioushypocrite #virtuesignaller #hippiegreenieleftard
