23.01.2022 In a 2018 poll, nearly half of Americans supported the idea of a Universal Basic Income program where did this idea come from and what would it mean for us? Universal Basic Income is the idea that all citizens are entitled to a livable income. Universal Basic Income has been gaining popularity over time. In 1516, Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ philosophizes on the benefits of a minimum income. ... In 1796, Thomas Paine wrote of providing a basic endowment for all adults over the age of 21. In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. named guaranteed income as the counter to poverty. Universal Basic Income essential ideas include aid given in real money rather than vouchers or services, no income level or income requirement, provided to individuals rather than households, and distributed in frequent intervals and not in one big lump. The ideal outcome is freedom of choice in work, lifestyle, and education, and creation of an egalitarian society with equality among citizens. The ultimate goal of Universal Basic Income is to reduce the effects of poverty, such as crime, depression, and addiction. The idea might seem utopian, but testing the reality of a Universal Basic Income has just begun. A possible way to pay for this idea is Value-Added Tax. 17.01.2022 Outback Australia is one of the great remaining intact natural places on Earth and we don't often think of that in that way . . . that's something that's now rare and special in the world," he said. "There are millions of people that are very keen on bird watching in Australia and just having some species like the grey grasswren is a magnet for people to go out to the landscape and spend some local dollars and help the community through tourism," said Dr Traill.

16.01.2022 Economic development professionals and mayors are working in partnership with foundations, anchor institutions, unions, community organisations, progressive business networks, workers, and community residents. What’s emerging is a systems approach to creating an inclusive, sustainable economy where all can thrive. The work is place-based, fed by the power of anchor institutions, and built on locally rooted and broadly held ownership.... It’s about building Community Wealth powered by Economically Sustainable Social Enterprises and Co-operatives. A social enterprise is a descriptive term for a range of businesses prioritising social goals, rather than a legal form in itself. In the Australian context, social enterprises take on a range of organisational legal structures, making it difficult to distinguish them from other organisations. 1. The enterprise has a defined primary social purpose, environmental or other public benefits. 2. The enterprise derives a substantial portion of its income from trade. 3. The enterprise reinvests 50% or more of annual profits towards achieving the social purpose. Want to find out more? 15.01.2022 To ensure firms remain locally owned and in the public interest, these public holding companies could mandate that their full or partial ownership interest be turned over to workers at the company (in the form of a cooperative or Employee Stock Ownership Plan), to long-term state or local public ownership, or to community-based non-profits (where they could be run as social enterprises). #Kommuniti #BuildKommunitiWealth

01.01.2022 The Smart Community Podcast - Zoe Eather In this episode of the Smart Community podcast, I have a brilliant chat with Sabrina Chakori, the founder of the Brisbane Tool Library. Sabrina tells us about her background in environmental economics and her passion for creating a sustainable society, as well as what sparked her interest in Smart Community concepts. We discuss why democratising the economy is so important and the need for other economic models and using metrics other than just GDP. Sabrina tells us about the Brisbane Tool Library and how it fits in the sharing economy, as well as what she's learned through the process. We explore the concepts of access versus ownership, abundance versus scarcity and the balance between localisation and globalisation. #Kommuniti #BuildKommunitiWealth #NewEconomy #NENAPerthHub
