25.01.2022 Listen to the birdlife after a recent thundery down pour this morning! How many different species can you ID by sound? Today with the help of my 11 year old son, we recorded a new bird to add to our Aussie Backyard Bird Count. ‘The beautiful Diamond Firetail Finch.’ When he explained what he’d seen, A little bird with a red beak, a red tail and black & white spots on it’s chest, I thought he was making up an interesting new bird species!...until he googled it and I used ...my bird App and the smart search to help to ID it! Perfect detailed description! I’ve seen these finches on our bush property before but not for a few years. 24.01.2022 Who could believe this is all hidden away just 20mins down the road from Kookaburra Creek! Today we hiked the amazing Ring Route at Alligator Gorge. A 10km hike will take a good 4hrs. We managed it in 3. We tried it clockwise, starting at Bluegum Flat at the fire track, which was (for the kids) a tedious 3.5km uphill stretch, then we were rewarded with an absolutely incredible trail winding its way back down along the full length of Alligator Gorge, including the Terraces and the Narrows. #alligatorgorge #mtremarkablenationalpark #nationalparkssa #theterraces #southernflindersranges #flindersranges #thingsthatcaughtmyeye #naturelovers #seesouthaustralia #southaustralia #hikesinsa #hiking #hikingadventures #familytime

21.01.2022 Wow! Whos fogged in!? Sounds like its widespread! Nature sure is full of surprises. A wise old bushman once said after a thick inland sea fog youll receive good rains in 40 days time. Weve marked it on our calendar! A couple years back we had a thick blanketing sea fog lasting most of the day and received really good rain 41 days later! Was pretty much spot on! Every year when they migrate here we have a pair who nest in a large gumtree near our house. 15.01.2022 Well that wraps up another fun week of counting birds for The Aussie Backyard Bird Count! Sound on! Today I walked our secluded Sheoak Loop Trail counting many different species of birds, one being the beautiful Rufous Whistler who I was privileged enough to see close up! I sighted 27 different bird species in total over the last week. What a wonderful, healthy and thriving eco system we have here. Ive never seen such a large plant before, and Ive not seen it in flower form, only seed form, when its gone all fluffy! Willowie is part of the Mt Remarkable National Park. We have an access gate into the park from our Retreat. We go in regularly to enjoy the shared use hiking and mountain biking trails.
