22.01.2022 REPOST FROM Slumber & Sprout We talk about awake windows A LOT because they really are important when it comes to making or breaking sleep. BUT they aren’t the only thing that you need to focus on when judging the best time to put your little one down. You’ll notice the awake windows are based on a range so how do you know where your baby sits within the awake range & when is the right time to get them off to bed? 1 Check your baby’s age appropriate awake window for their... age (corrected age if prem) & apply this to their awake time as a starting point. 2 Consider how active or inactive your little one has been during their awake time. If they have been on the go non-stop they might be ready for bed at the lower end of their awake time but if they have had a pram walk or a car ride for example they might handle being up until the max end of their awake time. The drive to sleep will always be stronger the more active your baby has been. 3 Keep in tune with your baby’s sleep cues within their awake time to determine their individual readiness to sleep. 4 Take into account how long the last sleep was. Did your baby have a nice long nap previously? If yes, they might not be ready to sleep until their max awake time. If they had a short nap previously they will likely need to go down at the lower to mid end of their awake time. 5 Most importantly do what you know works. There will always be the exceptions to the rules. Some little ones aren’t able to stay awake for as long as their age appropriate awake time & others need a little more awake time than the average dictates. If you know your baby sleeps well when you apply an awake time different to the above then you stick to that. At the end of the day we are looking for happy, thriving & well rested bubs & sometimes this is achieved left or right of centre. Do you need help with awake windows & how to structure your day? Get yourself a copy of the guide that has been saving the sanity of many Mama’s - The Complete Guide to Baby’s Day - link in bio. You are doing a great job Mama. Tag a friend who would find this post helpful. X x x

21.01.2022 This week in our Hearts of Koorana rubrique we will feature our Board President - Rodney. Rodney works together with our CEO and the Board of Directors in setting the future direction for Koorana and ensure that it has the governance and financial sustainability. Rodney loves hearing the stories of the positive outcomes and the differences that the team has made to the lives of children and their families. "It is particularly rewarding when I get a chance to visit one of our... programs, be that in preschool or a playgroup and seeing the young children from all different backgrounds playing together and creating stuff." - Rodney says. In his free time, he likes to explore the outdoors by bushwalking and kayaking. He enjoys seeing the different communities from different cultural backgrounds enjoying Sydney's great outdoors. His favourite colour is blue! If you see Rodney at one of our programs or services, please feel free to say hello! #Koorana #allchildren #allabilities #allpossibilities #heartsofkoorana #children #community #inclusion
21.01.2022 The roots of Koorana began in late 1976, when a group of local women identified the need for a formal centre as a place to focus on playgroup activities. This group of inspired women approached the federal government for funding to set up a preschool and community centre. Koorana Child & Family Services has been devoted to fulfilling the dreams of our children in the community for over 43 years. 03.12.2021 The simple act of reading aloud to your child can have a significant impact on their early language and literacy development as well as providing a great opportunity to bond and connect. Here are a few tips to help you and your child get the most benefit and enjoyment out of your story time activities. 1. Start early and incorporate reading into your daily routine. Reading to babies is important for healthy brain development and lays the foundation for language and writing ...skills. Creating a special time for reading, such as bedtime, provides an opportunity for special times that both of you can look forward to. Establishing a routine also helps ensure that reading doesn’t get lost in the busyness of your day. 2. Use board and cloth books. Board and cloth books are great options for babies who like to touch things and put everything in their mouths. 3. Take turns. Let your toddler turn the pages of a board book and respond to her when she points or reacts to the story. 4. Ask questions. As you are reading, increase the interaction by asking questions, such as What do you think will happen next? What was your favourite part of the story? Why? 5. Reread favourite books. Read your child’s favourite books over to help learning through repetition. 6. Point out similar words. Point out words in a book that begin with the same letter to help your pre-schooler become familiar with the letter and begin to associate certain words with that letter. 7. Count objects on the page. As you read to your child, count objects on the page together to help develop those early maths skills. 8. Read with passion and expression! Using inflection and maintaining the same highs and lows in your voice at the same point in a story helps your child begin to remember the words. 9. Set an example. Show your love of reading - let your child see you enjoying reading your own books. This will help them develop a love of their own. See more

02.11.2021 A language delay is when a child has difficulties understanding and/or using spoken language. These difficulties are unusual for the child’s age. The difficulties might be with: - saying first words or learning words - putting words together to make sentences... - building vocabulary - understanding words or sentences. When to get help for language delay: Children develop language at different rates. So comparing your child to other children of the same age might not help you to know whether your child has a language delay. If your child is not hitting their language milestones you may want to seek a professional opinion. Where to get help for language delay: If you think your child is having trouble with language, talk to a professional. - a GP or paediatrician - a child and family health nurse - a speech pathologist - teachers or educators at your child care centre, preschool or school - an audiologist - a psychologist. #EarlyChildhood #BestStartInLife #familyservices #earlyinterventionprogram #earlyinterventiontherapy #earlyinterventionservices #parentingsuccess #allabilities #developmentalmilestones #earlydevelopment #earlyintervention #parentingisfun #parentingadvice #kooranasupports

29.08.2021 Children’s Week this year highlights the theme of friendship: Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others. Friendships give all children a sense of belonging. They help children develop self-esteem, social skills and life skills, like getting along with others and sorting out conflicts. Here’s how parents can support children’s friendships:... - Get to know children’s friends and peers. - Organise playdates and sleepovers. - Give children some ‘social reminders’. - Explain social rules to children. And if children have additional needs, practising play and friendship skills can be good. It’s also OK for parents to give people ideas for including their child with additional needs. #ChildrensWeek #EarlyChildhood #BestStartInLife #familyservices #earlyinterventionprogram #earlyinterventiontherapy #earlyinterventionservices #parentingsuccess #allabilities #developmentalmilestones #earlydevelopment #earlyintervention #parentingisfun #earlydevelopment #parentingadvice #kooranasupports
