13.01.2022 KHT’s Rob Hyatt on Urban Aboriginal Experiences. Watch this beautiful film made by Visit Melbourne http://ow.ly/WqYM50EcU9J You don't have to travel too far to connect with and experience Aboriginal culture in Melbourne.... Meet Rob Hyatt from the Koorie Heritage Trust. Located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people in Melbourne's Federation Square, the Koorie Heritage Trust is an organisation dedicated to creating experiences that connect the broader public to Aboriginal culture and providing spaces for local Aboriginal communities to engage with history and culture in their own way. Through the city's natural surrounds, its art, food, fashion and stories, you've only to look around while you're in Melbourne to see the influence of Aboriginal Culture on the city. One incredible example is Melbourne's largest piece of artwork, a 32-story tall portrait of William Barak that hides in plain sight on the Barak Building, looking out across Melbourne and capturing the story in the city's landscape. For a 'taste' of Aboriginal culture, the Royal Botanic Gardens Aboriginal Bush Food Tour offers a hands on tasting experience or, for a modern twist on Aboriginal food, Charcoal Lane offers a bush to table fine dining experience that can only be described as a celebration and expression of Aboriginal culture ...

07.01.2022 Entries are coming in for our next KOORIE ART SHOW! This work is a digital print by Laila Thaker (Meriam, Badulaig) titled Young Moss". She explains the artwork beautifully - 'Young Moss' is part of a series I created called the 'Moss Series'. It began from photos I took of my homelands. Capturing the moss on sands, rocks, muds, bark - every unique part of the land that took care of me growing up. Using acrylic and water, I would mix and create the colours captured then use... the "fluid technique" to paint on canvas. I'm fascinated with the variables of this technique an medium where the final product is mostly never contrived. Each piece can take 3 - 7 days to create, and is dedicated to the stories and strength of my ancestors. If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander living in Victoria, you can enter your artwork too! See our website for the online entry form and more information. http://ow.ly/EbqG50Bs1k1 Complete the form by 18 October. Deliver your artwork between 26 October 15 November.

05.01.2022 This week in KHT Voices we hear from another Mori writer, Rangimarie (Waikato-Tainui) on her experience of Covid19 isolation, reflections on identity and hope. This terrible disease has affected humanity in ways that none of us could have imagined. Our Indigenous communities have thrived in ways that the coloniser certainly couldn’t have anticipated. Many are sharing, talking and whispering about the changes to come, following our collective incubation, which is exciting. I... only hope that a whole new wave of invisible kids becomes liberated by this change, so that these manifested intentions are the final cure for the infected muskets and blankets of our rangatahi. As we say: he waka eke noa. We’re all in this together. - Rangimarie (Waikato-Tainui) Click through to our website to First Nations International Voices - where you can read this piece in full. http://ow.ly/9lLu50BucPV Rangimarie is a writer, poet and storyteller based in Porirua, Wellington. She is a founding member of the Hine Pae Kura and Toi Whine Mori female artist collectives. In 2015 she published a collection of short stories for children alongside Robyn Kahukiwa, and has since been involved in numerous storytelling workshops and poetry readings. Her poetry has been included in exhibitions in Porirua, Wellington, Auckland, Tneatua, Melbourne and New York. She has also contributed poetry to the Wellington Museum, and magazines throughout Aotearoa. Her work focuses on exploring the perspectives of Mori Women.

03.01.2022 This week in #KHTVoices we hear from artist Kait James (Wadawurrung, Wathaurong) in an interview titled "A Butterfly Flaps Its Wings reflecting on the times of COVID-19 with Monique Grbec. "Colonial Virus is one of many Aboriginal-centric cloth patches James made especially for the #ournameamongstothers project guest-edited by Raquel Ormella. Curated by Ormella, the project involved artists posting small artworks to each other. Given this wonderful opportunity to share s...pace with some of Australia’s creative greats, James addressed all of her artworks with the Aboriginal name of the Country the recipient works on. She relished the experience and privilege of looking up maps to re-learn traditional Country names, and plans on continuing this practice throughout her life." Read the full interview via KHT Voices on our website: http://ow.ly/u88V50CeXll Kait James is a proud Wadawurrung woman and visual artist based in Melbourne. Kait obtained a Bachelor of Media Arts (Photography) from RMIT University in 2001, but only recently returned to making art, through her love of culture, textiles and colour.
