07.01.2022 MEEANJIN MARKETS ARE ONLINE TOMORROW - FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER at 9AM-9PM Please follow Meeanjin Markets Facebook and YouTube to get involved. Charlie Jia from the South-East Queensland Indigenous Chamber of Commerce (SEQICC), who host the event, says a face-to-face market was still not viable, so are going virtual again. Just in time for Christmas shopping!... First Nations’ peoples are skilled adapters. SEQICC was one of the first in the country to produce a virtual market in May. We were filming amid strict COVID conditions, and produced a high-quality free event under tight timeframes and stressful environment. It pushed many stallholders outside their comfort zone. To be able to sell online. To be more active on social media. It extended their skills and helped them reach new customers and audiences. We’ve had more time to gather the stories of 18 Indigenous businesses. You will feel like you’re chatting to them. Hearing about them, their products, their creativity, how they connect and continue culture through their businesses. What’s also exciting is that 16 of the 18 First Nations’ businesses featuring at Meeanjin Online are run by Indigenous women. Our project manager, Matrisse, Communications and Media person Kerry and presenter Mikki are Murri women, and filmmaker Merryn is a Koori woman. Many are juggling other jobs, children, families and life. Meeanjin Online on November 27, is showcasing First Nations’ culture, creativity and diversity, providing consumers a place to purchase authentically Indigenous products and gifts. To listen and learn about the oldest living culture in the world. You will see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, products, dancers, cooking demonstrations and a range of Indigenous musicians. Troy Cassar-Daley will be our headline act. Plus a few duets with his daughter Jem, an artist in her own right. Nadine from Culture Weave (Image supplied by Kerry Klimm) #meeanjinonline #meeanjinmarkets

06.01.2022 In our latest edition, on sale today, we report on the historic step for justice for First Nations people in the fight to stop deaths in custody. THE staunch ...and proud First Nations of central Australia came together in solidarity at the Alice Springs Law Courts barely a week after the burial of Kumanjayi Walker. They waited patiently as the landmark decision to commit the Northern Territory police officer charged with murder for the shooting death of the Yuendumu teen was made. A FIGHT between the protection of a Djab Wurrung Aboriginal cultural site and the duplication of a highway in western Victoria is becoming a growing battle. Last week lawyers for Djab Wurrung Elder Marjorie Thorpe were successful in an injunction bid to stop all work on the Western Highway near Ararat. THE family of Wiradjuri man Dwayne Johnstone, who died after being shot in the back while trying to escape custody last year, has welcomed a decision by the coroner to refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Mr Johnstone, 43, was handcuffed, shackled and shot in the back while running away from two NSW Corrections officers outside Lismore Base Hospital in northern NSW on March 15 last year. EDITION 738 is on sale now! To subscribe - and never miss any of the news from the Voice of Indigenous Australia - go to our website www.koorimail.com and follow the prompts.

02.01.2022 30 years of the Royal Commission - 30 years of headlines. Today marks the 30 Year Anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. The Koori Mail is acutely aware that we are here today because of the ongoing injustices, incarceration, racial violence and deaths of Aboriginal people prior to, and after 1991. ... The Koori Mail was born out of the 1991 #RCIADIC Report and has since been dedicated to covering Black Deaths in Custody to advocate for families and to hold those responsible to account. Today our thoughts are with the many families and communities who have lost their loved ones, and are still grieving. What does a front page headline tell? Our front pages since 1991 have been a window into the harsh realities for Blak Australia. This year we acknowledge 30 years of the Koori Mail newspaper - that's 30 years of truth telling about the injustices of our people. Take a look. #RCIADIC30years
