21.01.2022 This is New South Wales before and after the Black Summer bushfires. For the first time, satellites have revealed the scale of the destruction and the entirety ...of the aftermath in one image. Australian aerial analysis company Geospatial Intelligence captured the before-and-after images of the bushfire season, which burnt more than 5.5 million hectares across the state. The NSW Government is using the photos to help prepare for the upcoming bushfire season. Read more: https://ab.co/3lsqSYw

21.01.2022 When supporting an adult with diabetes, it is incredibly hard to know where to draw the line between being helpful and letting your loved one take responsibility for managing their diabetes. You may, however, find you have an unexpected ally in your local community pharmacist. With a third of women between the ages of 25-54 who are caring for someone, visiting a pharmacy at least fortnightly, your community pharmacy is an easily accessible source of advice and support. No one... likes to be told that "it's not good for you", so you may have to pick your battles when it comes to discussing food choices. However, you can stress to your loved one that there is a team of people there to support them, from health professionals like their doctor and pharmacist, to family and friends. Diabetes affects the entire family, not just the person diagnosed, so make sure you look after yourself as well. Having a supportive network that can provide advice and practical help when you need it is a very important part of living well with diabetes. Let your pharmacist know if you’re caring for someone because they’re here to help you too.

21.01.2022 Warm weather = creepy crawlies The best way to stay safe from bites and stings is to use insect repellant, stay out of long grass and wear long pants if you will be around bushy areas. Remember to give furniture, camping equipment and luggage a shake before using it. Find out more about bites and stings, and what to do when they happen at https://buff.ly/30VZhGB?

16.01.2022 Cannabis over the counter in Australian pharmacies The News has been full of articles about the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s decision to make cannabis available over-the- counter in Australian pharmacies from June 2021. While the headline is largely true, there is a bit more to it. TGA will permit the sale of cannabis products that are purely cannabidiol (CBD). This is the ingredient in cannabis that has actions in the treatment of pain, insomnia and anxiety. It i...s also used (as a prescription medicine) for the treatment of epilepsy. There are other ingredients in some types of cannabis; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the ingredient responsible for the high that is associated with recreational use of marijuana. THC products have medicinal uses in multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, chronic severe pain and more. There are NO plans to make THC products available over-the-counter. There are other restrictions on the new CBD listings. Supply will be limited to 30 days per package; a maximum daily dosage of 60mg will be enforced; it will not be available for children, and must be packaged in a child-resistant container. And importantly, the products available under this listing must be registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Currently there are no CBD products registered for sale in Australia, although with this newly-announced listing manufacturers may be prompted to apply for registration and listing. None of this is designed to interfere with patients needing access to medicinal cannabis today. The supply of medicinal cannabis is complex, requiring permits from state/territory and federal authorities and the clerical requirements are challenging to say the least. At Kooringal Pharmacy we are able to order and supply medicinal cannabis to patients with appropriate prescriptions and paperwork and can assist patients and prescribers with the clerical requirements. 15.01.2022 For people to feel confident in medical cannabis, and that it's an accessible option (if they want it), we need to reduce the complexity around accessing medici...nal cannabis in Australia. For patients and doctors alike, there are four steps you can take to simplify the process: 1. Learn the basics of cannabis understanding the difference between THC vs CBD 2. Know the requirements for eligibility. Are you eligible? 3. Choose an access pathway 4. Prepare to talk to your doctor Once you’ve covered off all four steps, getting a prescription for medical cannabis can transform from what seems like a daunting process, to quite a straightforward task. In a best-case scenario, you can have your first consultation to receiving your product within a week. In our article on pathways to access with Clare Baker from @Entoura, we cover what many find to be the most complicated aspect of the process access pathways and how to get a prescription from a doctor. 15.01.2022 Are you one of the estimated 3% of Australians suffering from psoriasis? In addition to the uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms of the disease, psoriasis can significantly affect a sufferer’s quality of life. Some studies of people with psoriasis show that up to 70% will avoid swimming, and 40% will avoid playing sport. 12% will even avoid leaving their house, with many people experiencing anxiety and/or depression. While there’s no known cure for psoriasis yet, ther...e are treatments which can help to control the symptoms. These include topical creams or ointments, pills or injections, and UV or light therapy administered by a dermatologist. Ask your pharmacist about the pros and cons of different treatment options, and which may work best for you.

08.01.2022 Is it a cold, or is it allergies? This can be especially challenging during late winter and early spring, when cold and flu season, as well as allergy season, are in full swing. Fortunately, there are a few typical telltale signs that tend to differentiate the two. Once you figure out whether you’re suffering from allergies or a cold, you can seek the appropriate treatment, manage your symptoms, and get on with the business of living your life. 07.01.2022 Meet the trusted clinics we’re partnering with to investigate the potential benefits of our high-quality medicinal cannabis for a range of treatment-resistant c...onditions - including anxiety, autism and insomnia. We are proud to have CA Clinics Australia joining us for this trial, with Dr Crosby Rechtin as a co-investigator. CA Clinics are a nationwide clinic focused on helping patients with chronic conditions and have many GPs and specialists that can prescribe medicinal cannabis. In this time of Covid-19, they provide care through their Telehealth services to even the remotest parts of Australia. Dr Mark Hardy, Medical Director at CA Clinics commented, "We help Australians access affordable, convenient and quality ongoing medicinal cannabis care. We can also partner with treating doctors and specialists to provide medicinal cannabis treatment alternatives that they might include in their patients' overall health treatment plan." Together, we aim to gather the evidence needed to better understand the role of medicinal cannabis in treating many different health conditions and improve patient accessibility. Patients who are prescribed Bod medicinal cannabis and meet the eligibility criteria will be invited to participate in this study, which will monitor health-outcomes for the duration of the study using the study app or website. If you are interested in the study, please click here: https://caclinics.com.au/bod-australia-cannabis-therapy/ or call CA Clinics on 1300 991 477.
