The 10 videos were developed and presented by Noongar artists and contain language and culture, taught through song. They were made during the technologically trying times of Covid-19 lockdown and kept our Koorlong presenters creative. If you are interested in purchasing a package please pm Kylie or contact [email protected]

20.01.2022 Keira and Cez are practising their tech skills and adding some new songs and moves to the Koorlong repertoire for 2020. Contact Kylie at [email protected] to have some Moorditj (deadly) young Aboriginal presenters teach your students Noongar language through song.

20.01.2022 Today the Koorlong team and the Magic Shadow Groovers (Pre-Primary)class from Bold Park Community School went on part of the Yaakin Bidi (turtle trail) in search of animals that we could include in our song project about booyi/yaakin (turtle) that lives in Galup. Uncle Neville Collard led the way and told us the story of how the maali (black swan)got its black feathers, he also pointed out kooyar (frog)and goolal (swamp hen.) We found out the painful way that ants are called... bidit On our return we sang In the Bush together, which is a song all the things we can see when we are walking through the Bush. We might draw some inspiration from this song for our turtle song.

19.01.2022 The Koorlong team are ready for bookings in 2020! Spread the word so that we can share Noongar music, language and culture in schools! We're available in all 4 terms.

17.01.2022 Today was a very special day for Koorlong, as we joined Hillarys Primary School on their Reconcilation Journey. Kobi and Cez conducted 3 Early Childhood workshops followed by a whole school performance with Madjitil Moorna Choir volunteers. The Upper Primary has been working through the Video Resource Package and were noticeably well versed in Noongar language and Auslan signs. Ancient Sands was a particular favourite and was sung with great gusto. Thanks to Michelle Kalma for supporting our programme. We enjoyed working with your students.

16.01.2022 It’s been a busy couple of days for the Koorlong team. Today we celebrated NAIDOC with Bayswater Primary School by performing at their closing ceremony. Thanks to all our Moorditj volunteers who came to support us.

15.01.2022 Was so lovely having Cezera Critti-Schnaars and Keira Gentle as our special guests last night at WK, giving us a taster of their Koorlong: Noongar Songs in Scho...ols program that they present along with Kobi. Was lovely to hear about their personal journeys too. Growing up not knowing about their Noongar culture but coming to learn about it in their later years, as well as learning the Noongar language and then passing it on, for Keira to her daughter and Cezera to her brothers. It was sweet to hear how Madjitil Moorna Choir and Koondarm has and continues to be an important part of their lives Big woolah to Kylie Bishop for organising their visit! Kobi also made a special dedication to Uncle Sealin Garlett, a moortidj birdiya in the local community, who sadly passed this last week See more

13.01.2022 Today Cez, Keira and our newest presenter, Sara, worked with Della-Rae Morrison to flesh out the 6 verses of the 6 Noongar Seasons Song. We used some artwork by Aurora Abraham found on City of Kalamunda flyers, as a colourful provocation. We are now laying down some beats and will soon choreograph the song. We are hoping that music teachers and general teachers will enjoy using our song to help connect their students to boodja, by observing the changes in the environment. Madjitil Moorna is in the process of creating a new edition of their Songbook and this will be one of the songs included in the offerings.

13.01.2022 Koorlong headed off on the Yaakin Bidi (turtle trail) once again this week. Kobi has written a song by the same name with the help of the Magic Shadow Groovers. This week it was time to unveil it and begin creating some choreography to go with it for our performance in two weeks time. Kambarang is definitely here, with insects everywhere, turtles laying eggs out the front of Bold Park School and Djiddee-djidee (Willy Wagtails) dive-bombing us as we are trying to sing!

12.01.2022 Mundaring Primary School had the Koorlong team for a full day of workshops on Monday. Moorditj music teacher, Karina Reif-Eaves, has taught all her classes some of our songs and prepared actions and percussion to go with them. What a treat! At the end of the day the Choir treated us to their version of Djidee-Djidee, which was absolutely kwobidak (beautiful).

11.01.2022 This week Koorlong was delighted to be invited to join Lance Holt Community School in celebrating their Community Day at kwobidak (beautiful) McFaull Park in Spearwood. Kobi, Keira and Cez were joined by some moorditj (deadly) members of Madjitil Moorna Choir in leading all the students from Kindy to Year 12 to sing some old favourites. We were honoured to listen to the school’s rendition of Paul Kelly’s From Little Things Big Things Grow. Thanks also for the sausage sizzle afterwards where we all got to know one another!

10.01.2022 Today at Bold Park Community School, Kobi conducted our warm ups outside with the tapping sticks. It wasn’t long before the rain drove us indoors to sing and explore some words for our Booyi/yaakin song. Kobi talked to the Magic Shadow Groovers about the process of song writing, and how songs can tell stories or describe feelings. We used the share book to look at sentences that the children had already written about the lake and the turtles. In small groups we then started finding some rhyming words to match. The beginnings of a Booyi song are beginning to emerge...

10.01.2022 Bold Park Community School is situated on Galup. This is the Noongar name for Lake Monger. The students spend a lot of time visiting this boodja and feel a special affinity with the animals here. One such creature is the Booyi or Yaakin (Western Swamp turtle.) Over the next seven weeks Kobi, Sara and Cez are working as artists in residence at the school to help the students develop their understandings about Booyi into a song. Today we began with the students sharing their knowledge of Galup by taking us on a walk to the lake. We saw djidee-djidee(Willie wagtail),yerderap (duck)and a place where koomal (possum) likes to hang out... but unfortunately no Booyi. Hopefully Uncle Neville Collard will help us out by sharing some special Booyi stories next week!

10.01.2022 Koorlong team just received their first lot of fan mail from the Year 2s at Hope Christian College. There were lots of great pics of Kobi and Cez. The favourite songs seemed to be Ancient Sands and Hop Hop, which we believe is George Walley’s I’m a Yongka. The kids said: I loved the actions and I experienced something new Are you a rock star? Yes or No?... I love the actions and movements and hopping I loved your songs because I love to learn new languages Nawww thanks guys... we had fun too See more

08.01.2022 The Magic Shadow Groovers and the Koorlong team shared their new song, "The Yaakin Bidi" (Turtle Trail) with their teachers and friends in a final concert this week. The Koorlong team have worked with the students over a period of 7 weeks to research the plants and animals that share the space with the booyi/yaakin (turtle) at Galup (Lake Monger.) Kobi wrote the childrens' ideas into a moorditj (deadly) song that contains all these concepts. Teachers, Kellie and Trish had used "Talk for Writing" as a method of using words and symbols to embed the song in the children's minds and we were so impressed with how well they had memorised the words! Congratulations to the Pre-Primary students and teachers of Bold Park Community School on a wonderful performance.

08.01.2022 Kobi and Cez were delighted to share songs and language with Sheoak Grove PS this week. Koomba (big) thanks to Madjitil Moorna member, Deb, for supporting them. Kobi was particularly impressed with how well the students could speak Noongar. Big shout out to Moorditj (deadly) teacher, Rosie Paine, for her work at this school, which only opened at the beginning of 2020

07.01.2022 Lots of people have been asking about our virtual workshops. Here's a teaser that will demonstrate a little of what you will find in our Video Resource Package. It's a great way to help your school address the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework. Contact us at [email protected] if you would like to know more.

06.01.2022 The Six Noongar Seasons Song is almost complete! Today Sara, Cezera , Keira and Kobi worked with Della Rae Morrison and Charley Caruso to produce 5 out of six seasons. Each season has its own flavour musically and is linked to the next by a chorus. The lyrics are catchy ear worms and will guide young people to remember the features of each season, helping to connect them more closely to the boodja on which they grow and learn. The Koorlong team is hoping to share the song with students and teachers in Terms 3 and 4, when we finally get back into schools for post-Covid workshops. Please pm Kylie if you are interested in having a Koorlong workshop at your school or email [email protected]

05.01.2022 Any teachers out there who want to join us in Fremantle. These yorga are so inspiring. Come and hear about the great work they’ve been doing in schools this year

04.01.2022 All welcome! Phil Bartlett is contributing a song to our next Noongar song book.

03.01.2022 Yay!!!! Our first workshop for 2020. Thanks to Tobi Galley and the drama students at Woodbridge Primary School for having Kobi and Sara in to their school yesterday to help them complete a song about The Six Noongar Seasons. The students are writing a musical about the seasons and this song will be a highlight, with all 300 students at the school learning it. It’s a great way for the students to sing about the environment they see around them and connect with Noongar language and culture. We are proud to have been part of such a Moorditj project

03.01.2022 We are keen to share our new video resource package with schools wanting to address the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework during the pandemic and beyond. Koorlong has been granted permission by many First Nations artists, to share their songs using online videos. It's been a steep learning curve, but the Koorlong mob have been busy during isolation, recording virtual Koorlong workshops particularly aimed at Early Childhood and Early Primary classes. The first video gives special consideration to how we might break down an Acknowledgement of Country for children. Facebook PM Kylie at Koorlong for more details or email [email protected]!

02.01.2022 This week we have been lucky enough to go to four out of six Schools of Early Learning (Como, North Fremantle, North Perth and Nedlands). We got to work with the children on many songs including the new six seasons song, Bibbulmun Bonar. In fact they are the first kids to hear it! The song will be found in the new songbook that will be released shortly. We look forward to going to the last two schools (West Leederville and Subiaco) next week! The six schools are taking a Nyoongar season each and creating a joint presentation together about the six Nyoongar seasons for the end of the year. How cool!
