21.01.2022 Thanks to all the Guides and families that came to plant a shrub at Kooyalee on Tuesday afternoon. Our goal is to put 300 new plants at the campsite during 2019... to celebrate 100 years of Guiding in Qld. Habitat Stepping Stones is an initiative that encourages us to provide food, water and shelter for all the animals and birds that come for a visit at Kooyalee. The girls enjoyed placing a new bird and possum box in our trees. See more
20.01.2022 Girl Guides Queensland has chosen to support the initiatives of Habitat Stepping Stones for the State Good Turn in 2020. Koiranah Ranger Meg Lanson from the Kep...pel Coast District has added three habitat elements in her own backyard to create a valuable stepping stone between existing wildlife corridors. Meg has established wildlife friendly plants for food in the new garden, including a native tree (protea) to attract birds and native bees (there is a hive nearby). The installation of a bird bath in the centre of the new garden provides water for bird life. The garden has rock edging which provide shelter for insects and small reptiles. Visit www.habitatsteppingstones.org.au to see how you can create a habitat to help your local wildlife.
20.01.2022 Second maintenance day at Kooyalee in a row saw the cottage door get a much needed paint, more lawn mowed and the fence posts and gate sign all got a treatment of sump oil to preserve them.
14.01.2022 It's World Turtle Day! Did you know there are 23 species of freshwater turtle here in Australia? Australia is also home to six species of marine turtle includin...g the Green Turtle, the Loggerhead Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle. Unfortunately our turtles are under threat from foxes, habitat loss and pollution such as plastic bags (which the turtles mistake for jellyfish), fishing lines and hooks, poor water quality and seagrass depletion. Freshwater turtles are timid and build their nests near the water. Land clearing around water courses leaves these beauties vulnerable to attack from foxes. Pictured is the Eastern long neck turtle.
