21.01.2022 Sunday Classic Photo 3 James Dodge and his dog, Dodge’s Boxer, were a winning pair at the Moyston Sheep Dog Trial. James 21, a farm had on the Dunneworthy... property and Boxer 2, won the open section and ran a close second in the improver. The pair are not newcomers to the trials. They made the finals at Ballarat and Lancefield this year and won the National Maiden Dog Trials in Canberra in 1979. (Taken from local paper supplied by Susie Goodyear)

19.01.2022 A little sneak peak of the skill that you can expect to see at this years Trials! A GUIDE TO HOW THE TRIALS WORK: Each competitor starts with 100 points, and ha...s 15 minutes to complete the trial. The handler must walk continuously between obstacles, ideally carrying the sheep on their right within the marked corridor. Points are deducted along the way for imperfect work. 1. Starting Peg, The handler waits for the bell at the post, in the delivery area, with dog. 2. Sheep are let out at the other end of the field, and on the judges signal, the dog is sent (cast) to bring the sheep to the handler in the delivery area. 3. Winding Peg, when sheep are delivered, all proceed to the first winding peg, sheep must go on the right of the peg. 4. 2nd Winding Peg, sheep must go on the right of the second peg. 5. Race, handler waits in the set (ring) until all sheep have negotiated and cleared the Race (7 points). 6. Bridge all proceed to the Bridge were handler waits in the set while all sheep negotiate and clear the obstacle (8 points). 7. All proceed to the Pen were handler waits in the set. All sheep must be placed in the pen, before the gate is closed, finishing the trial (10 points). See it all for yourself at this years National Sheepdog Trial Championships between 11-15th March at the Hall Showground. Video captured from our media launch last week at Regatta Point.

13.01.2022 Goldie and Lad haven’t been able to get to many trials this year. So they have been spending their time being patients for the Vet students at CSU in Wagga. Working dogs are great for ultrasound as they are lean and it’s great for students to visualise different organs. Hope everyone is keeping safe and we hope to see you at some trials soon .

12.01.2022 Sometimes handlers find it challenging to get their dogs to stop at the top of the outrun, and while not every dog needs to stop at the top, every handler needs... the ability to stop their dog at the top, to account for dog leg fetches, breaking sheep, pressure at set out, etc. The difficulty of a stop at the top may be the lack of consistency in enforcing the lie down or stand, but sometimes even dogs that are compliant with the lie down else where on the field, aren’t consistent at the top. The closer your dog is to the sheep at the end of the outrun, the more likely he is to get an adrenaline rush, especially if the sheep are quite reactive. When your dog has a rush of adrenaline or excitement, this can greatly increase the difficulty of getting him to lie down. The further the distance your dog is from the sheep at the top of the outrun, the less effect he'll have on the sheep hence the less buzz he'll get from their reaction and the more chance you’re likely to have of stopping him before the sheep move. Many times at the trials, you’ll see the dogs that are tight at the top (hence, too close), often don’t have a good lift. Sometimes it's because the dog is feeling the adrenaline rush and the anticipation of getting a reaction from the sheep, resulting in them coming on too hard. In fact, some dogs that are allowed to be too tight at the top will often seek the buzz they get from the sheep reacting to their tightness, rather than seek balance point. This is one of the many reasons it is very important not to extend the outrun too quickly. If you are struggling with the lie down at the top of the outrun, we recommend evaluating if your dog is tight or flat. If you determine your dog is too close to the sheep at the top, this may be the reason you are struggling there. It is often helpful to shorten the outrun until the shape is correct. You can learn when and how we extend the Outrun in the Academy and our Courses. macraeway.com Patricia Alasdair MacRae

09.01.2022 Many people get caught up in doing the same thing and expecting more results. They don't set high enough expectations for themselves or their dog, and while mos...t every dog plateaus for a while, it is important to differentiate between this, and becoming complacent. To keep improving you have to put yourself in a position to be uncomfortable and possibly, even embarrassed. Those inspired by learning and developing a partnership with their dog, rather than what others think, will have more success. If you are trying, you are already more of a champion than anyone sitting on the fence criticizing. Don’t be afraid to shoot for your dreams #macraeway If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time" Patricia Alasdair MacRae
