15.01.2022 Some lovely Australian native timber going out today.... these pieces will be turned into beer pulls for a pub in Victoria. From top to bottom we have blackheart sassafrass, river sheoak, Tassi myrtle burl, hairy oak, coolibah burl, mallee burl and huon pine.
15.01.2022 A bit about Korora Specialist Timbers.... We are a new small business operating out of Anstead in Brisbane's western suburbs. The business started in the suburb of Korora in 2018 (hence the name) but relocated to Brisbane at Christmas. Our niche is supplying timbers not available from most sawmills or hardware stores, and also offering mobile sawmilling, timber dressing and joinery services. We specialise in salvaging storm-blown and otherwise cleared trees We stock a wi...de variety of slabs and boards of species such as red cedar, rosewood, blackwood, silky oak, hoop pine, prickly ash, camphor laurel, silver and red ash, white cedar, coachwood, white beech, sassafrass, redgum, bloodwood, cadagi, jacaranda and smaller amounts of many others (huon pine, myrtle, hairy oak, red forest oak, macadamia, blackheart sassafrass etc etc). Got a big slab that needs to be flattened and dressed? No problem, we have a 'slab master' machine to do the job. We also have a mobile Lucas sawmill which can either slab or dimension cut your logs, or we can buy them from you. We also have a full wood workshop and can make custom furniture, specialising in whole slab dining and coffee tables as well as benchtops. If its anything timber, please contact Korora Specialist Timbers! See more
14.01.2022 Loving this fiddleback blackbutt..... This is the first coat on the vanity from last post.
13.01.2022 This large stack of silky oak (Grevillea robusta) and Kilarney ash (Eucalyptus dunnii) boards is nearly dry. All has been quarter sawn, the silky oak to show the beautiful rays in the timber, the Kilarney ash for stability as it has a high shrinkage in drying. The Kilarney ash is a bit like Tassi oak in general properties - lower density and very easy to work compared with most eucalypts. The silky oak has legendary status as a cabinet timber. The ash is $20/m for 200 x 38mm, and $26/m for 200 x 50mm roughsawn. 150mm is also available. The silky is $15/m for 150 x 28mm, but 180mm wide is also available.
12.01.2022 For lovers of Tassi blackheart sassafrass, these flawless boards are for sale on eBay: Look at this on eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264658713717... This timber is exquisite although rare and expensive in this quality.
10.01.2022 This week l am milling a giant rose gum (aka flooded gum, E. grandis). This tree fell down "slowly" one night, nobody heard it fall, it just came down gently as the roots gave way in wet ground. At 1.1m diameter at ground level it's a beauty which should produce 1m wide slabs at 2.5m. Some of the timber is purple with extremely narrow sapwood - see photos.
05.01.2022 Just finished this "covid" desk for someone now working from home. It is made from river sheoak (Casuarina cunninghamiana). A lovely timber, now protected and difficult to get. I got it at an auction many years ago, and have enough to make another desk the same if anyone is interested....
04.01.2022 I've been milling a large rose gum (flooded gum, E. grandis) this week. One crotch grain section produced some lovely slabs which will be spectacular once dried, dressed and finished (18 months to wait!). The last photo is of another tree I slabbed recently, a sally wattle (blackwood, A. melanoxylon) which grew in the hinterland of Byron bay, and shows a wide range of colours. Again will be gorgeous.
03.01.2022 Macadamia is fast becomming a best seller for small ornate uses, like knife handles and turned pens. Just look at this grain on a quarter sawn piece!
02.01.2022 Some of my cagaghi (Corymbia torelliana) slabs are now dry, so had to dress one to see what it is like. I think you would agree they are rather lovely with streaks of pink, brown, orange and black. These slabs are 2.2m long and up to 800mm wide if anyone is interested. Bigger ones are still air drying.
