03.01.2022 Thanks to Trainer JB at Fairbridge College and his Conservation & Land Management students, A LOT of work has been done in Korribinjal! Having surveyed the degradation and formulated a plan with Friends of Korribinjal, JB has brought his students out fortnightly during July, and ongoing in August. As you saw, we started with planting native seedlings in Autumn. Their survival rate has been astonishing compared to previous plantings. We think Kristy of Landcare SJ got her se...lection of hardy species just right! Late July we started weeding for fire risk management this coming summer. The terrain is difficult, neither vehicles nor machines can get into Korribinjal, so on foot the volunteers have carried pruning tools down into the rocky valley and everything we need to remove is done by hand and hulk! You can see the area being cleared of invasive and flammable olives, and how a neighbour's bonfire has grown as a result! This month we requested Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale assist our enormous feat by collecting the green waste. They have agreed, and for now the pile of olive and assorted weeds (hand-pulled cotton bush etc.) awaits removal from the roadside in Millbrook Close. These students are learning much about the environment as well as helping to restore Korribinjal. We've now spent several mornings there, clearing tons of weed and wire, starpickets and rubbish. We plan on continuing these fortnightly efforts as long as we can. We estimate so far we've beautified an acre. Still MANY more acres of even more challenging topography to tackle. Perhaps you'd like to get on board with this restoration work? Much of the work is physically demanding, however some tasks are satisfying and simple, like pulling sapling olives or other weeds out of soft soil. We appreciate any help, or perhaps you already care for a piece of Korribinjal and we're unaware? Please let us know. Ultimately the restoration of Korribinjal will benefit not just the neighbouring properties in Millbrook Estate, but Jarrahdale, bush walkers, wildlife and residents downhill from the brook, as far as Mundijong. So thank you volunteers and carers.
