25.01.2022 Today is #WorldChildrensDay: a day to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights, to participate in dialogue and to take action to build a better world f...or children in a year that has been marked by uncertainty and challenges which threaten the rights of children. On November 20th 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. On this special day, we are delighted to share a new initiative to highlight Corner of Hope, which has touched the lives of so many children and adults: The first Corner of Hope school was established by AMI in 2010 in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in New Canaan, Nakuru, Kenya, starting out with two mentor teachers, eight teachers in training (members of the camp community) and 200 children who were being taught in tents. Now, 10 years later, the school is the heart of the community, a second school is established, 102 teachers have been trained, at no cost to themselves at either 3-6 or 6-12 levels, and well over 1000 children have received a free high-quality Montessori education and many others have taken inspiration from the transformative nature of this community-led initiative. As this year marks the 10th anniversary of Corner of Hope, we would like to take the opportunity to look back and highlight the incredible work and dedication of everyone who has contributed to Corner of Hope. We have launched a special page where we will share stories from Corner of Hope, based on the experiences of the teachers, children, community leaders and other key people. It shows the evolution of the initiative and highlights the extraordinary achievements of the Corner of Hope community. Learn more here: https://cornerofhope-esf.org
24.01.2022 Lots of fun yesterday in the Yindyamarra Room... we spent the morning baking Gingerbread biscuits! It was the perfect opportunity to practice Grace and Courtesy. One child handed out each child a tissue and another served the cookies. We practiced ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Everyone waited patiently until everyone was served, before asking May we eat? After eating, the tissue was folded up to keep the crumbs in! Luckily we made so many we could share with our friends n...ext door in Jarjum and we treated ourselves with a second one! Grace and Courtesy is about helping children to understand polite social norms.

23.01.2022 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Yesterday the children made a gorgeous Christmas Wreath using flowers found in our Educator’s gardens. Sustainability is embedded into our daily practice at Kotara Montessori, with the goal this year to minimise the paper used for Christmas craft and instead utilise natural resources. ... The children are developing a love of nature and a keen desire to care for our planet. It is a beautiful thing to see! Our waste increases by around 30% at Christmas! Australians use more than 150,000km of wrapping paper during Christmas enough to wrap around Earth’s equator nearly 4 times! There’s some great tips here to help reduce our waste over the Christmas period https://nationalstorage.com.au/b/christmas-waste-australia/
22.01.2022 The face of one proud kid! Drawing is a such beautiful activity for a child’s development! It allows for expression! Some times we can’t say what we are feeling but we are able to communicate through our art. Being able to express ownself through drawings also supports emotional intelligence. ... Motor Skills! From a scribble to a work of art taking pride of place on the fridge at home - drawing helps to develop hand-eye coordination, and finger muscles. Problem Solving! What colour should I choose? What should I draw? How do I create this animal? Children ask themselves these questions helping them develop problem solving skills and come up with solutions. Imagination! Free drawing gives children the opportunity for their imagination to run wild! School Readiness! Drawing is an early foundation for logical thinking and abstract thought, and it gives children practice with understanding more difficult concepts.
22.01.2022 S N A K E G A M E The Snake Game is a fun way for children to learn about addition. The goal is to turn the colourful snake into a golden snake! There are three components:... The black and white box contains the Black and White Bead Stair. The red box contains the Multicoloured Beads. The golden box contained the Golden Beads. From other work the child will be familiar with colours associated with a certain quantity - e.g. one is red, four is yellow. Through the game children build on this knowledge and begin to memorise addiction facts The Snake Game is a lot of fun and provides a wonderful opportunity for accomplishment and pride as children begin to solidify knowledge like both 7+3 and 6+4 equal 10. You can read more about the snake game here: https://montessorium.com/encyclopedia/snake-game

16.01.2022 These words from Lelia Schott of Synergy: gentle parenting resources. Kids get dysregulated easily. So do parents. It’s not intentional. It's how the undeveloped brain and the triggered brain works. Big feelings, needs, and beliefs can feel alarming, sending the nervous system into threat mode. ... The safer we feel with all emotions and needs in ourselves and children, the braver we feel about truly connecting and setting boundaries. These are the C’s that help prevent disconnection and/or encourage reconnection. Choose a C when you're feeling stressed to help you feel safe again. Connection: feeling seen, heard, understood, and appreciated. Feeling a safe sense of belonging to self and others. Compassion: noticing the pain or discomfort in another and moving to express kindness and support. Self-compassion is the gift of doing this for oneself. Curiosity: is another C I love. Becoming curious about what the cause of our child’s or our own dysregulation is. What are we needing, feeling, or believing? Care: attention, protection, affection, or solution necessary for the welfare of someone or something. Conscious: choosing awareness of sensations, emotions, thoughts, and behavior and practicing responding with our highest intention. Communication: expressing and empathizing with feelings, needs, beliefs, and respectful requests as we honor one another’s rights and lives. Cooperation: working together for the same end.

10.01.2022 This week we were so lucky to have a very special visitor, one of our mums, as part of our study on Community Helpers! Lauren is an Occupational Therapist. All the kids were glued, listening intently, with respect, and showed beautiful manners towards our visitor. We particularly enjoyed seeing the walking stick Lauren brought in and learning about why they are needed. ... 10.01.2022 N A I D O C W E E K Listening to stories Playing clapping sticks ... Singing Inanay "Inanay" is believed to be from the Torres Strait Islands. It's sung there and in Australia. This is a song in Yorta Yorta. It cannot be translated word for word, however, research shows it a song about a goanna, the 'choo' is shooing the goanna away. The word 'goanna' is the English name for the animal, it was their closest approximation of the name Aboriginals used for the animal. https://youtu.be/1xGWMFBfKi8

05.01.2022 Swinging into the week!! Happy Monday!!
05.01.2022 Outside children are free to run, jump, swing, climb and expend their energy. Large and small motor skills are developed and cardiovascular endurance improves. ... Whether it’s running, balancing, throwing, catching - physical activity is a valuable form of stimulation contributing to healthy mental and physical growth. Even the smallest of our friends benefit! Children engage muscles, ‘hold on’, coordinate their body with rhythm, and gain valuable insights into cause and effect and spatial awareness. There is more to playing outside than purely the physical benefits. It helps improve cognitive and social development as children rely on their senses. There is a variety of exciting stimuli - differently textured, coloured and fragranced plants and flowers, a bird’s song, the wind in the air - providing multiple opportunities for children to explore and play using their greatest tools, their curiousity and senses! Children delve into their imaginations, creating games, individually and in groups. They learn about the world, feeling a sense of control and accomplishment as they make decisions, while cooperating, inventing and following rules, and having fun! Communication skills improve while indirectly relationships between numbers are explored as games often require keeping score or counting. Children explore their own physical and emotional capabilities as they experiment with the environment - how high can I swing? - can I climb this on my own? - does it hurt to fall on the grass? The Kotara Montessori outdoor space provides children with a safe place to explore these questions and many more. The outdoor space at Kotara Montessori provides children with beautiful sounds, sights, textures and life, exposing them to and supporting our innate appreciation of the beauty in the world. When playing outside, children learn about the natural elements, weather, seasonal changes, and a variety of plants and animals. Through this exploration children gain an understanding about their relationship with nature, while enhancing their imagination and curiousity about the world around them.
05.01.2022 Everyday, but especially today, we would like to pay our respects and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the land of the Awabakal people. The land of which Kotara Montessori calls home. The land on which we play on, learn through and enjoy each day. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Pictured - @Matt Chun and James Taylor’s incredible drawing, for @un_monumental post - depicting the 250 Aboriginal Nations across Australia, each nation defined by its own unique territory..., language and culture. Aboriginal Nations are the oldest continuing culture in the world, with the oldest oral histories. 01.01.2022 & We’re getting back into the swing of things! Pictured across the first three images you can see The Pink Tower - such an iconic Montessori material, designed by Maria Montessori herself! ... The Pink Tower is from the Sensorial area of the Montessori curriculum. Sensorial materials enable children to refine their senses, and have a clearer understanding of what they are seeing, feeling, touching, hearing or smelling. Importantly, the cubes in the Pink Tower are all the same colour, shape and texture. This helps the child to focus on one important quality of the material - size! The cubes in the Pink Tower are all the same colour, shape and texture - allowing the child to focus on one key characteristic - size! The aim is to refine a child’s visual sense by discriminating differences in dimension. Children are able to feel the weight change in the blocks as the progress in size from smallest to largest. As they build the tower, movement is refined. Self-control improves as they practice the activity. The control of error is the child’s own visual perception - they can see themselves if the tower is in order - the child grows in confidence and independence as they can identify any errors and make changes. The Pink Tower indirectly prepares children for Language and Maths. Children practice the pincer-grip required for writing as they manipulate the smaller pieces. New language is introduced such as cube, large, small, bigger and biggest and children explore their environment looking for items smaller than and bigger than. In preparation for mathematics, the Pink Tower indirectly introduces the Decimal System, as children work with 10 cubes representing numbers 1-10. Geometry is also alluded to, as the child explores different cubes and their dimensions. ! ...and check out the concentration and precision in the last three photographs!
01.01.2022 Afternoons like this at Kotara Montessori Friedrich Froebel, a German educator said that Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul. Play supports development and learning through - ... Physical Development - active play using large and small muscles such as climbing, running, ball games, digging, jumping, and dancing.
