11.01.2022 Girish Karnad talks about the various aspects of the form and structure of plays. He talks about the multiple purposes served by dialogues - from characterisati...on, establishing action to multiple levels of persuasion implicit in them - persuasion between two characters and persuading the audience about the relevance of the dialogues. He identifies certain limitations of the form of plays - time duration (max 2.5 hrs) and audience size (~500) also affect the narrative structure of the play. Karnad identifies playwriting as similar to construction of a house - a step by step evolution of various inter-dependent blocks, each with a specific and unavoidable purpose. For a robust construction, its important for the playwright and the actors to continuously question the reasons for every dialogue. Then he points out the careful structuring in some classic plays - Hamlet, King Lear, Abhijan-Shakuntalam - through which he establishes the importance of reading such well-structured plays for a playwright in order to master this craft. Finally he differentiates between truly great plays from mediocre plays - based on their ability to convince you by the experiential truth contained in them.
