22.01.2022 Ladders are an essential silo feature allowing growers to inspect grain in the 'headspace’ (between the top of the grain stack and the roof of the silo) where many grain storage problems are likely to first appear Ben White, Grains Research and Development Corporation grain storage specialist. According to Mr. White, many growers were tempted to save a few dollars by omitting the ladder from the order, but this could impact the functionality of the silo and make maintenan...ce and monitoring more difficult. At Kotzur, we can provide a number of different safety-compliant options for growers who wish to access the top of their silos: Caged ladders Spiral staircases Cross-over walkways Read the full GRDC article https://bit.ly/2Qk7DFm #KotzurSilos #AustralianMade #AustralianOwned

21.01.2022 Recently completed These eight GPE10-6-35 Drying Silos (290T) were built near Narrabri, NSW. The Kotzur drying silo uses a specially developed drying cone/plenum. The air is forced into this plenum and then passes through the grain mass, ensuring that all of the stored grain is evenly dried.... In this instance, the grower is planning to harvest corn at 18% and dry down to 14% using ambient air. 19.01.2022 Preserving value and quality after harvest is a key for pulses. Often pulses are harvested at higher moisture to avoid shattering and losses. According to Grains Research and Development Corporation, well-managed on-farm storage facilities utilising aeration cooling and effective hygiene will overcome the majority of grain quality and insect pest problems that might occur with chickpeas, mungbeans and faba beans.... When choosing the right storage for pulses, it is crucial to go for aerated and sealable silos. Elevated silos tend to be the preferred choice for hygiene reasons, as they are easier to clean. Aeration cooling is also a critical part of ensuring pulse quality is maintained and an important aid to reducing insect pest problems during storage. #KotzurSilos #KotzurBulkSolidsHandling #AustralianFamilyBusiness #AustralianMade #AustralianAgriculture

15.01.2022 A piece of Kotzur silo-making history Fifteen years after a young Ray Kotzur helped his father build a concrete silo on the family property, grain silos were again on the agenda. By this time, Ray had established his steel fabrication business in Walla Walla and John Lysaght Australia (forerunner of todays BlueScope Steel) had started making continuous coils of galvanized steel. Ray thought that it would be good to roll the silos walls from coil steel. Ray met with his fri...end David Muller and told him that he was planning to start making silos out of steel. David said, sounds good, Ill be your first customer, they shook hands and the deal was made. On 8th December 1962, the first Kotzur Transportable silo was on its way to its new home on David Mullers farm at Henty, NSW. Fifty eight years later and one silo ring less, the silo is still standing at the Mullers property in Henty. We loaded it with lupins one year and the top ring busted" says Neil Muller, David's youngest son who now lives in the property with his family. Silo number 10,000 is also at the Mullers property. Andrew Kotzur personally delivered it in 1987 to keep on with the tradition. Weve got a bit of a Kotzur silo museum going on here said Neil. #KotzurSilos #KotzurSiloHistory #GrainStorageHistoryAustralia
14.01.2022 Did you know that Kotzur first silo was not made of steel? During the second World War, the Kotzur farm at Alma Park (NSW) was a busy place, producing grain, wool and pork (important to supply the US troops in the Pacific). Ben Kotzur (Andrew Kotzurs grandfather) decided that he needed a silo to store grain in bulk. So he set about, with the help of his boys, building a concrete silo. Completed in July 1945 this silo is still standing strong 75 years on at The Pines, Alma ...Park (NSW). #KotzurSilos #KotzurSiloHistory #GrainStorageHistoryAustralia

03.01.2022 Sheltering Silos to maintain grain quality To assist in maintaining grain quality, it is desirable to shelter the silos from the sun as much as possible. Shading silos helps to passively reduce the grain temperature in the silo. Therefore, where possible, make use of trees, hills and other silos to shelter a silo. It is best to arrange them in rows East to West, as only the end silos receive morning and afternoon sun. Trees on the western side protect silos from the hot afte...rnoon sun in summer. #KotzurSilos #KotzurBulkSolidsHandling #AustralianFamilyBusiness #FamilyOwnedandOperated #AustralianMade #AustralianOwned #AustralianDesign #AustralianAgriculture
