10.01.2022 VIDEO UPDATE 9 | LEG 2 "Search for Solutions" Super excited today as the Legacy team recorded the first coral spawning for the expedition! ... At 9:54 this morning Professor Peter Vize recorded the first hard coral (Goniopora lobata) spawning! We’ve also been seeing lots of fish spawning including hundreds of surgeonfish gathering at dusk to do their thing. The mass coral spawning event we've all been waiting for is getting closer... it may even be tonight! Spawning is a funny thing, and although we have extremely good data on the predicted time and cues, these may or may not be correct for the Far North. That is why we have Professor Peter Vize with us as it's his job to really nail down the spawning of specific species and see how they compare to other places. Along with Dr Charlie Veron who jumped in on the first dive on his Legacy Super Site and descended on the coral species he discovered here last year. Charlie surfaced to tell us in no uncertain terms after 3000 dives on the Great Barrier Reef, this is without a doubt the most beautiful site he has ever seen. All of us here at Great Barrier Reef Legacy have to agree! The footage from this video showcases just how spectacular this area is. Professor Justin Marshall from the The University of Queensland is out here to see how the corals rate on the CoralWatch bleaching scale and he will be sending data back every day. Coral Watch is incredible in that can give us a rapid health check of corals all around the world. After diving the "Legacy Super Site" today he has reported that the corals here are extremely healthy which is great news. This should translate into a readiness to spawn. Our expert media teams are also prepping all the cameras and equipment to try and capture the spawn in all its glory. This is no mean feat as it all takes place at night, so plenty of extremely powerful light sources are needed. Pete West from BioQuest Studios has a lifetime of experience working and shooting underwater and he and his team are by far the best at showing the secret life of corals in a unique and powerful way. Dr Dean Miller and Mark Steven have been delivering the images of the expedition to you each and every day and they are about to step it up a level as they prepare for extra night dives on top of a full day of shooting. On their target list of topside, drone, underwater and of course 360 virtual reality coverage!! Wowsers when will they sleep?? The team’s in super high spirits. It’s incredible to be part of a group of skilled professional and passionate scientists, educators and communicators. Everyone’s just so excited to be here to document the single most important event in a coral's life history. The team is now gearing up for our evening and night dives. Stay tuned tomorrow to find out how it went!
