25.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Hope you've all been well Just a throwback pic and some updates to share today, photo is from this time in 2017! . First of all - who thinks Poke looks sporty in the jumping gear and should do a few SJ rounds next year? ... . Lots happening here as usual - the urge to renovate is synonymous with pregnancy I think We're awaiting our fence man still; mother nature decided to dump a week and a bit of heavy rain on us, so the ground went back to slop for a little while there! We have a gorgeous few days coming up, so here's hoping that familiar big tractor rolls up the driveway soon . We have 2 new HUGE day yards going in, along with a few improvements on existing fencelines, which means stronger, safer fences, and of course more trees. Very excited to be able to take on more off the track horses, and client horses next year in our lovely new private paddocks . Down the driveway we've installed some more lighting - including a beautiful big lamp post by our new front gate, and some flower bushes to pretty it all up. It's starting to look quite professional I think! . Inside the house we're just as busy knocking out walls and renovating bathrooms as we speak, too! Our house is a bit of a construction site at the moment, but it's going to come up beautiful - looking forward to sharing some before and after shots with you all soon! . 25.01.2022 Thank you so, SO much to everyone for your ongoing support <3 Ive wanted to get back into riding, training, and competing for so long, but have been held back by injuries, or outside responsibilities, or whatever else was going on in life... Because of a few very big and unexpected life changes, Ive been given a now or never opportunity to go for it - so I am! I often think back to one of the most recent conversations I had with Dad, and how encouraging he was for me to ...get my butt into gear and get back into it. Im sure hes looking down and thinking about bloody time! Keep your eyes out, will be updating you all as I go with services offered and horses coming up for sale, as well as everyday life on the job type stuff. 24.01.2022 Geoffrey update! . I think were at day 3 post - injury, and so far hes doing great . We took his bandages off today to have a look at his cut, and Im super happy with how its healing. So far theres no infection, and it looks like itll heal nice and flat with minimal scarring if any at all ... . We smothered it with manuka honey, re-gaused and re-wrapped it, and it will be due to come off in 2-3 days. . Hes been the perfect patient for everything, really impressed with him for a big baby horse in a new place with new people. Weve got two more days of antibiotics, and then hopefully were home free pending careful management of the wound. . Ill keep you updated as always . 24.01.2022 Hey everyone! Meet Ella's new pony, Barney . Every time a float or truck rolls up the driveway to drop a thoroughbred off, she asks me if it's a little horse for her, and she's always a little bit disappointed when a 17hh athlete comes down the ramp . So today we went and picked one up that's a little shorter than the usual suspect, and the huge smile on her face is something that will sit with me forever ... . Barney's an unbroken pony who needs a bit of work put in, but as you all know he's come to the right place for that He loaded and travelled beautifully considering how little handling he's had, but he was quick to trust me - probably due to all the love and kindness he'd had from the lady we bought him off. . Huge thank you to Yvette from Horse Play for entrusting us with this lovely little guy, looking forward to working with him and giving him many years of love here with us . 24.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Omg we had a sunny day today! Kid free, hubby at home, and decent weather meant we could get outside and get a few jobs done. Im definitely happiest when Im being productive . 2 fences repaired, a very grateful Bonsey rotated into a fresh paddock and out of the mud, fresh cottons on the TBs, two sets of rugs washed and hung out, a new water filter on the house, and another chuck out sesh to make room for our new little family member ... . Weve started Bonsey on @poseidonequine Digestive Eq to help get some weight back on again after a virus kicked his butt a few weeks ago. Hes on a good diet, fed morning and night, unlimited hay, and rugged up but hes just not bouncing back as well as he should. Im thinking its a gut issue as hes never really been a good do-er, so fingers crossed this helps him . Nothing else super exciting to report - on Monday Ill have hit the big 4 month mark of my pregnancy (woohoo!), and as of today its only 39 days till Spring. Yes, Im still counting down! So much mud outside that we cant even mow, so the place is looking like an overgrown swamp, bring on that warmer weather so we can get the place looking pretty again! . 24.01.2022 I absolutely love teaching these two . Its so cool to watch someone so dedicated grow and develop their skills! The weather hasnt been kind to us this week - but come wind or rain, Dakota has kept showing up .... Although Polka had an education to start with, hes not the easiest horse to bring into work. Dakotas had to push him through a bit of silliness, learn how to rev up a lazy horse, and learn to do less with her aids and let him do more... In other words - dont touch him unless you mean it, and leave him alone when hes going forward. . Riding a lazy horse really is a skill of its own! In just a few weeks shes got the hang of him, and hes travelling beautifully for her with nice rhythm Now that hes getting fitter and we have a working go button, we can start suppling him up a but more and sharpening up his transitions - and a few other fun bits and pieces, too! . The COVID-19 lockdown hasnt slowed down their progress one bit. Our plans for them to go competing are on hold, but with more prep at home theyll only be a more solid team when their time comes! . 23.01.2022 "Wondering why shes taking a photo of the sunset, when she could be filling that feed bowl..." . Hey everyone, hope youre all safe and well! . Its been absolutely bucketing rain here for the last 24 hours, we even have MUD on our property which is mind blowing for our spot on the hill ... . Yesterday was a huge one while the sun was out; what I call the morning shift - rugs off, waters checked, hay given, and any odd jobs done... . - Setting up a bridle for Geoff - Finding a lead for every halter - Clipping a halter & lead to every gate - Poo picking - And more tack room cleaning . I lunged both otts on the arena paddock as I didnt have a spotter here to ride - and as it was the lunge did them both good! Both were washed and put away, then after lunch it was the afternoon shift; feeds made, rugs back on, more hay out, waters checked again, any drying gear away, and sheds locked up . By the end of the day Id clocked over 18,000 steps on my @fitbitanz and definitely earned the ridiculous amount of chocolate I inhaled when I got back indoors! . Today was much quieter with all the rain, rugs came off for all of an hour or two when the sun came out, and after her ride Dakota was kind enough to help me rug them back up before the rain came back with thunder to boot! . Another few crappy days ahead, hopefully that means we get a few dry ones to make up for it In the meantime, I have tack to oil, the quarry man to call back, a bit of planning for our next few bits of tack room reno, and more tree placement planning to do . 23.01.2022 Were back! . What a huge week weve had here on the farm - tree branch lopping, splitting and stacking firewood, tree planting, fence repairs, and even more saddle racking installed in the tack room . Horses had the whole shebang seen to this week - farrier, dentist, saddles measured up, and physio, which is why theyve had so much time off. ... Both thoroughbreds had a bit of work done on their mouths and backs, but theyre fighting fit again and its full steam ahead for both! . I had a sit on Bonesy today, and all the while I was thinking "dont fall in love, dont fall in love..." Hes sooo nice to ride, quite good off the leg, starting to soften a little, and is proving to be pretty quiet. Hes a bit overbent at the moment while hes figuring it all out, but once hes nice and strong and I can ride him forward, I think hell be ace! Looking forward to having a ride in the arena paddock with him where its not so slippery so we can push him out a bit more . We got onto our fence man today who can hopefully come out soon to do the bottom rail on our round yard, then all we have to do is source some sand and well be all set for winter... 23.01.2022 Bonsey . Back into it with this superstar today! We kept it short and sweet - something that cant be helped with how boggy the ground is at the moment, but had a super positive ride . Hes really starting to get the hang of travelling in the contact, still loads to improve on but a great start for him! ... Hes getting better off the leg, and proving to be a sweet, honest, and reliable horse . Dakota had a ride on him after her lesson on Polka this morning - a massive effort having two lessons back to back, and both on young horses! Bonsey looked after her, and she rode well and learned heaps - super proud of them both! . Watching the weather channel like a hawk for the next decent day - crap weather doesnt bother me much but the slippery ground isnt ideal to ride on! 23.01.2022 When people ask me why my horses aren't bothered by much... This would be why! . Poor little Barney has copped all sorts of torture this week; flags, ropes, cracking whips, and I even put a roller on him today and he didn't bat an eye. Such a cool little pony . I'm now on the lookout for a saddle and a pony roller for him, I've got loads of big horse gear but nothing for the little ones - looks like I need to go shopping!... . This week I'll measure him up for a set of rugs, and book him in for appointments with our physio, farrier, and dentist before he does any real work. It'll be good to see where he's at, and give him a nice clean slate to start off with before his journey as a ridden horse begins . This week he also had a big brush, and I picked up all four of his feet as well. He wasn't thrilled about either initially, but I took my time and we got there with a bit of gentle persuasion. It was so nice to give him a good pamper, I'm dying to get that mane and tail tidied up when he'll let me! . He's come so far in such a short time and tries so hard. I'm so proud of my little buddy so far, and excited to see how he comes up! . 22.01.2022 Painting the round yard - plus a little paint gun show and tell
22.01.2022 Yesterday my little orange mate went back home to her owner . What an awesome journey we had while she was here; going from a shy little girlie who wasnt very sure of me, to a brave little superstar who became my best little buddy . I can confidently swallow my pride and say she changed my mind on lots of things - my opinions on mares, chestnuts, Arabs, and even Arab chestnut mares! ... . Even though she wasnt too sure of me to begin with, she genuinely tried every step of the way, and I felt like she worked with me to cross everything off the list; groundwork, getting caught better, dealing with a fly mask better, sensitising and desensitising, accepting tack, learning to lunge, and eventually accepting a rider . When the ridden education started, I found that her work ethic made her such a genuine joy to ride. The harder I worked, the harder she worked, and she progressed quite quickly as a result. Wind, rain, thunder in the background - not much bothered her! Walk, trot and canter was established early on, leg yields in all three gaits, transitions within the gait, starting to soften in contact, sharing the arena with another horse, and she even looked after a young rider in a lesson. Whats more, she did it all without any naughtiness or sillies whatsoever at any point . 22.01.2022 #appreciationpost . Jay taking Nedgie for a spin back in 2012 . When Jay and I got together back in 2008, he hadn't had much to do with horses - well, compared to now!... He liked being around them, having had an uncle who was a race trainer, and as far as riding went, he'd done a bit of trail riding as a kid/teen on their annual family trip. . I'd been out of riding for a couple of years when we started going out, and it was his encouragement that started my equestrian journey back up again. Little did we know at the time how far I'd go with it from living in the suburbs and taking a weekly lesson to eventually becoming a trainer! . Jay has been an enormous support, and without his love, help, and encouragement - there's no way I'd be where I am today. He even took lessons himself! . Over the years he's become an incredibly capable horse handler; he does everything from catching, feeding, rugging, float loading, transporting, right through to dealing with veterinary things like administering medications and vaccinations and dressing wounds. . He's my ground crew when breaking young horses in, or doing those first rides off the track, and an awesome strapper at comps. He's taken over most of the horse jobs while I've been pregnant without being asked, and is just an all-round legend . Thank you so much Jay! . 22.01.2022 The lovely Bones . Today was my first proper play with Bonesy, and Ive gotta say I genuinely really like him! I think hes quite smart and seems to be the sort of horse whos always looking for the right answer. Changes of direction came good pretty quickly, and hes getting the hang of turning in rather than out which is exactly what were after ... . He seems like a quiet boy, every time he turned in and the pressure came off there was lots of licking and chewing, the poll came down, and he showed us what a chill dude he really is! . Hes proving to be great to handle, catch, rug, and do everything with - really looking forward to bringing this boy on! . 22.01.2022 A little bit of sun peeking through after a very cold afternoon the other day, brrrr On the bright side, its only 61 days till Spring, or 152 till summer! . This is the wettest year weve had on our little farm, and the first year that weve had actual mud - and LOTS of it. .... There hasnt been much going on with the horses, Bonseys had some time off due to our riding surface being a mud bog, and then a couple of weeks ago he dropped some weight and went off his food! A change in feed and a watchful eye on our boy has him picking up again - the joys of winter! . Polkas working well, @dakotawilden.equestrian has been doing a lovely job with him both on and off property, and Im super proud of them both . The tack room had another big clean up the other day, rugs washed and folded, stacked up, and sizes labled. A few were sent for repairs, and last night we ordered a heap of leg straps and fittings to stock our emergency fix-it stash back up. Nothing worse than a horse trashing a rug on a wet day and your spares are ripped or missing leg straps Always be prepared! . Jay fitted bright new lights for me in the shed, and hung my stereo speakers up on the wall so we have music outside again, yay! Still sucking up for outdoor lighting for the round yard (and a surface installed), but we will get there - theres always Christmas! . 21.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Finally - a few decent days where we could get outside and get some work done! . Weve had a couple of big days working out the front to get our driveway tidied up, starting with the removal of half a tonne of ground cover! Next step was cutting the trees right back, getting everything off the fence, some old mulch removal, and a big burn off. This was a huge job for poor Jay who had to do all the heavy lifting ... . Weve got a new gate coming next week, a paint gun, (the first of many) big tins of paint, grass seed, and weed spray. The next week and a half will have us cutting back more trees and shrubs, edging the driveway, removing more mulch and ground cover, painting fences, and digging a trench to make way for our next surprise! . Earlier in the week we were busy giving two of our gardens a big clean out, washing rugs, fixing another fence, and another tip run. The work never stops on acres! . The horses are all well, Bonsey is VERY slowly picking back up again, and Polka is still enjoying his holiday until he comes back into work - something thats been tricky with the winter rain and covid restrictions. We will get there though - only 20 days until spring now! . This week marked 16 weeks into my pregnancy, which means Im not far from that half way point now A couple of weeks ago we got brand new carpets installed in the house, and were planning our bathroom renos as we speak. 21.01.2022 The ups and downs of owning horses! . Well, I promised to be transparent with you guys so here it is - Geoffies first vet visit . Poor Geoff had a bit of an oops moment yesterday afternoon with a fence. He wasnt hooning, had been in and walked the perimeter, was in one of our new private paddocks, and had already said hi to his neighbours.... . Just a freak accident that was just as weird as it was scary to watch! He was prancing around showing off, not looking where he was going, and he trotted straight into a wire fence, panicked, and cut himself. . Our wonderful vet was out within the hour to clean him up, check him over and dress his cut. Thankfully it was fairly superficial, but Im glad I had him checked over properly . This is exactly why its important to have just in case funds sitting there, and also why they say theres no such thing as a cheap horse! . This morning hes walking really well, surprisingly isnt swollen anywhere, and is bright and alert. He tucked into his breakky happily, stood while I checked him over, and was even up for a cuddle. . 21.01.2022 It was a quiet day here today - we all needed a break! . The last few days in a row I feel like I havent stopped - Ive been cracking the 20,000 step mark on my @fitbitanz, and this morning I woke up and was just absolutely exhausted! . The horses had earned a break as well being in work (well, groundwork) most of the week, and both off the track boys will have a physio sesh tomorrow ... . I still got most of my mowing done, a bit of housework, and the usual Mum duties, but other than that it was just a good old self care day Tomorrow well be back into it - more mowing, moving our bargain cupboards into the tack room, going through rugs, and getting a few bits of gear out for Geoffrey. Ill have a few calls to make - booking our equine dentist, our rug repair lady, and getting in touch with our fence man to put one more rail on the round yard so we can get our base done before winter. This will mean well have a safe place to work when the ground gets too slippery . Its crazy how flat out life is, even on days where Im not riding, teaching, or doing a shift at work... 19.01.2022 Barney . Today was day 2 of bootcamp with Mr Barney Rubble, and once again the improvement in him from start to finish of this session was like night and day. I'm honestly SO proud of him . He's quite a sensitive little bloke and always watching and waiting for that next cue. These smart, sensitive types are my favourite kinds of horses to work with ... . We did some more point and send, draw in to change direction, and I was able to get him to disengage the hind, crossing over from the inside hind from the other side of the round yard. He is so clever! . The one thing I'm noticing is that he's not thrilled about being close to me, even changing direction he'd rather pivot on the hind like a western horse than draw right in, so I started working on that relationship as well. . We started with approach and retreat, he was happy for me to pat him on the face, but would run if I touched the neck, so I sent him off to work, and then drew him back in to try again - we did this about 4 times before he'd let me touch him, and from there we made fast progress. I'd rub on him, and when he relaxed - a slow blink, a drop of the head, a sigh etc - I backed off . By the end of our session I was able to approach him and rub him on the neck with both hands, on both sides with him standing relaxed. I'll have to do quite a bit of this sort of stuff with him, but it was a really positive start and I think he genuinely tried hard to overcome his worries . 18.01.2022 Beautiful Bonesy . What more can I say about this horse - hes such a cool customer! Today was my first ride on him out on the arena paddock, and he went beautifully for me! .... Hes got such a great brain, and hes that kind of horse whos always looking for a job to do. . Today he was a bit on the energetic side when I first got on, so we started off with some suppling to help him focus. (AKA to bring his attention to the arena, and off the cows a couple of properties over!) . I find thats the best thing to with green or distracted horses - send them forward but give them tasks. Transitions, changes of direction, and forward. Flex them in and out, yield them in and out, and forward. Soften the neck, stretch them down, and forward, etc. Rinse and repeat . We did lots of that today with Bonesy boy, and I was so impressed with how hard he tried and how quickly he picked it all up! . Looking forward to getting this superstar out for round 2 tomorrow! . 18.01.2022 Hey everyone! . I had to do a post to celebrate having Polka for seven years today! . Time goes way too quick, I still look at him and see that scruffy 13hh yearling that was absolutely swimming in a 53 rug!... . Weve had so many ups and downs together, and although hes not everyones cup of tea - I think hes pretty spesh Hes still a fairly blank canvas all these years later due to me having babies or being injured on and off, but Ive got big plans to put some miles on the clock next year and get him going once and for all . Our lease rider has finished up with him earlier than planned due to some life changes and opportunities - were sad to see her go, but at the same time excited for her and wish her all the best of luck in her next journey! . Polka has been turned out where hell stay until Im able to ride again in 6 or 7 months, but Im sure he wont mind! . Im hoping hell play a big part in our plans for next year, which Im super excited to unveil once we get everything set up and locked in! 18.01.2022 Beautiful sleepy Bonesy . What a gorgeous spring day it is today! Horses are all out enjoying some nudie time, and the thoroughbreds are looking sleek and summery Poor Polka is still a hairy bear - the joys of being part Clydie! .... We've had our first bit of new fencing put up over the weekend - a nice tidy up for our private paddocks and protection for our willow trees from the horses . The spring grass has gone mental here, so after worming we rotated the paddocks and Bonsey was happy to oblige mowing the day yard site, arena paddock and laneway for us Our yards are set to be installed between silage and hay cutting season, so hopefully in a months time - so we're super excited! . The house is set to have its next lot of love next week with more work done on our bathroom reno, so looking forward to that being all ready to go for when bubs arrives in 14 weeks or so! . In the meantime I've gone on early leave from work, so I'm using that time to do a bit of research and put a few things in place to step up our work with the horses next year - including more off the trackers . 2020 has been so crazy for us all, but the extra time at home is a great opportunity to get some goal setting done for next year! 18.01.2022 Bonsey . This horse is just mega - for a green ott I honestly cant fault him! Another fantastic ride today, and a foot perfect gentleman as always. He was a little more energetic - totally expected with a feed re-jig and increase, but no sillies whatsoever .... Today we did lots of changes of direction and suppling work. Hes not the bendiest horse, but he certainly tries, and the improvement in him from first ride to sixth has been phenomenal . As a rider Im always trying to be better - which is another reason I get Jay to tape my rides - Ive always been my toughest critic! Lately Ive been working really hard on my contact, and this horse has been the perfect teacher for me, being so green. I know Im stronger riding counter-clockwise as Im right handed, which means my outside rein is stiller, so the changes of direction are to get used to having a new outside rein and a new inside leg. Repeating this makes my two hands and two legs work more independently of one and other - its a bit like patting your head while rubbing your stomach! . Its too easy to avoid the things that are hard, so Ive set myself a goal to fix all the things I struggle with! . I was happy to see an improvement in both myself and Bonesy today, I might have to start looking up some local venues to take him out to soon! . 17.01.2022 Barney . Day 4 of bootcamp for this little fella today, and a massive breakthrough for him... I think we officially became mates . Building on the work we did yesterday, it was time to catch him and get some desensitising happening. He was fairly good to be caught, backing away but not running - win number 1 of the day.... . I started it off easy for him, rubbing him on the neck with my hands like yesterday, and then with the rope. Aside from his head being up like a giraffe there wasn't really a huge reaction - win number 2. . I swung the rope over his back and was expecting an explosion, but he just stood still. Now this is usually a sign that they're okay with it, but watching his expression and body language, he was just trying to shut me out rather than processing what was happening with the rope. His head was up and his neck was like a rock . Sure enough he got to the point where he couldn't cope any more and buggered off - so I buggered off along with him while still rhythmicly swinging that rope! . When he stood still, I backed off and then started again. . From there it didn't take long to get the reaction I was after - the head dropping, sleepy eyes, and licking and chewing. Good pony! . From there he let me rub him all over without tension, and I could march up and noisily swing the rope over him, without much reaction whenever I felt like it . I've gotta say, this pony is so bloody smart and tries so hard. He will make a brilliant kids pony, and I don't think much will phase him. . 16.01.2022 Bonsey . What a little diamond this guy turned out to be! He really is one of those horses you can drag in out of the paddock, jump on, and just ride. Yet to see any silliness whatsoever, and he really does look after whoevers on board Im so excited to see how he goes off property, Id love to get him out to a few shows in the summertime - if the covid situation settles by then of course ... . Hes had a bit of a break these last couple of weeks as the weathers been rubbish, and I havent had my spotter here during daylight hours - Im still sucking up for an arena with lights, but I have a feeling that may be a while away! Hopefully well have the round yard surfaced and lit for next winter . In the meantime, Polka has come back into work this week, and Dakota has done a brilliant job riding through a fair bit of naughtiness! Dealing with green horses is such a huge learning curve and test of wit, but I couldnt be prouder of her for how gutsy and dedicated shes been . 14.01.2022 I so genuinely love this horse! Hes really come out of his shell in the last couple of days, and started to show us what hes really like . Today was groundwork session number two with beautiful Bonesy. He stood like a gentleman to be caught, was MUCH better to lead (no excitement or acrobatics today! ) and as always, he was great to unrug and brush. .... We did more hooking on in the roundpen, and he remembered everything we did the day before - Im really impressed with him! Hes turning in most of the time now, drawing in to rest, and his transitions are getting really snappy . Hes always got one ear on me and is always waiting for the next request, sometimes jumping the gun and guessing for himself, haha! 14.01.2022 Geoffrey . Hey everyone, hope youre all going great! These last few weeks have been mental - so sorry for my absence from the socials .... Weve been doing a bit of a big clean-up around our place, harrowing, mowing, edging, fence repairs, tip runs, and planting more trees. Theres always so much to do on acres when winter rolls around! . When Tazzie went home we found ourselves with a spare private paddock to rotate, but then Polka came up with an injury and had to be brought in. We had the physio out to him, the poor boy was very sore - self inflicted from running around and going ass-up most likely! . With so many horses on our property, private paddocks full again, and an extremely wet, muddy few weeks, we made the sad decision to find Geoffrey a home earlier rather than in the spring/summer as originally intended . Really sad to see our big smoochy boy go, but super happy to see him go to a wonderful competition home. Looking forward to cheering him and his Mum on when theyre out eventing, and will definitely be keeping in touch! . 14.01.2022 My beautiful boys . Only 52 days till Spring - yes, Im still counting down! Im sooo not a winter person - bring on longer, warmer days, sunshine, horse time, and MUCH less mud! . Not much has been happening with the horses lately due to how wet its been, but they seem to be enjoying their winter breaks.... Farrier is coming on Tuesday to do everyones mani/pedis, but with another week of rain ahead it looks like itll be another indoor week for us. Well make it a positive though - at least we can get some home improvements and (pre) spring cleaning done! . 14.01.2022 Surprise, its OTTB number 2! . Meet Geoffrey AKA Mypo Time. Geoffrey raced in South Australia, retiring 4 months ago with earnings of $1600 . 13.01.2022 Guess who's back?! . Bonsey boy came in today for a bit of groundwork to see where his head was at - I'd forgotten how much fun this horse was to work with We ran through the hooking on process, and he'd remembered everything I'd taught him this time last year. I didn't even have to run! .... Point and go cue Drawing in Change of direction Disengaging the hind And we even had a play with some sensitising and desensitising! . Such a gentleman to handle, great to catch, and respectful of my space as always, it was like he hadn't had a single day off . Physio is booked for next week, teeth, deworming, and feet are all up to date, so now we can start building him back up to bring him into work again - including a big clean up! 13.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Hope you're all keeping safe and well We had another huge week here, working through our long to-do list - it's amazing what can be done with a few sunny days! .... We finished the mammoth job of gardening the driveway, which included digging a trench to the house for our big project of the weekend... That's right, we finally have an electric gate - no more getting in and out of the car, yay! . We gave the front post and rail fence a facelift with a good lick of paint, and started the process of pressure washing, sanding, and painting the accents on the house to match. Everything needs a second coat, but the weather wasn't on our side yesterday afternoon to get that done unfortunately! Next sunny day we can hopefully get cracking on that, and get my signage back up . Guttering, garage doors and downpipes are on the list as well for when the weather allows, along with more fence painting, replacing doors, replacing indoor blinds, replacing the carriage lights, installing outdoor blinds, and a bathroom reno . We pulled up the front garden, which will be getting replaced soon, and then hopefully the place dries up enough to start prettying up the horse area of our property - the most important part! . Week 19 of my pregnancy this week - almost half way, and our spring count down ends with the first day of spring tomorrow, woohoo! Then then count down to summer begins (92 days) . 12.01.2022 Bonesy . Hands up who'd like to come do Bonesy's first ride after a year off? Hahaha! . I'm counting down to when I'm clear to excersise and ride again, and definitely looking forward to getting this lovely boy back into work.... . This series of photos was from the day we let him go in the hay paddock to tidy up around the edges - he was very happy to go for a run around and have a good play! These last few weeks has been great for him, and he's definitely enjoyed stuffing his face for the last part of his holiday . Soon we'll start prepping him for work, which means being seen by our physio and dentist, and getting a clean bill of health to get cracking with some strength training and work on the ground. That way once I'm fit to ride, he'll be ready too . Polka will be brought in for the royal treatment too, and hopefully both boys will come into work together - that should whip me back into shape I'm sure! . 10.01.2022 I love this horse. There, I said it . Today Ill admit - the motivation was NOT there to work horses! Its freezing cold, muddy and windy here, and all I wanted to do was go inside and inhale more chocolate. However, we rugged up, and out we went! .... This was only Bonesys 4th groundwork session, and the change in him from day 1 is just phenomenal We refreshed everything weve been doing to make sure its all definitely installed, and today I asked for more softness and disengagement. Instead of one step, we worked towards three on each side - which took a few goes, but we got there! . We also worked on me being able to approach him without asking for disengagement, so he didnt think that every time I walk up he has to step away. Its a bit like Simon says - only the magic word is a tilt of my head instead Hes brilliant at reading my body language, another reason I love sensitive horses! . We finished up with some desensitising to the flag stick, flinging it around right next to him and stopping when he stood still. Same for over his back, and developing that to stopping when he didnt flinch . He picks things up SO quickly, and as he comes out of his shell were realising hes actually a really cruisy boy and a total smooch Today after I finished with the flag stick, I went to give him a rub on the forehead, and instead he put his head in my arms. I could have cried - what a sweetheart . Looking forward to getting this guy under saddle, I think hell be a star . 10.01.2022 Bonsey . Heres a little unedited snippet of our ride the other day - as promised! . Videos are a bit more honest than photos, so this gives you a pretty good look at what this boy is like under saddle ... . This was still only ride four, so you can see how green he is - but for an ott so early on in the piece, Im pretty happy with him! . I left the sound on, as I tend to think out loud when I ride, so you get little snippets of whats going on in my brain as we go. In the longer video Im muttering help him, more outside leg... There we go... Give with your inside... More forward! . Its not always pretty in these early stages, but my job isnt to sit there and look good, for now, Im there to teach the horse. Well polish at the end once all the button installation and fine-tuning is done! . At this stage its all forwardness, suppling, and straightness - and the more forward hes going into my two hands, the straighter he is. You can see he wobbles when we lose that forwardness, and when I kick him on he straightens up and the contact improves as well. Forward = your friend, and using leg on a racehorse is a good thing! . I didnt get to ride yesterday as we had a huge farm day, but it was super satisfying to smash out a few jobs! We cut back more trees, split a heap of firewood, planted two more weeping willows, mowed, sprayed the roundyard to prep the surface, serviced a car, harrowed everywhere, sorted rugs, and cleaned/filled all the waters . Back to rainy weather again, but hopefully will be back on board within the next few days . 10.01.2022 Session 3 with Mr Bones today, and yet again Im super impressed by this clever boy . I really like this type of horse - the smart, sensitive ones Hes got a bit of worry in him which were helping him deal with, so Ill keep going with the groundwork and desensitising for a few days before jumping on board. .... Im so fond of this boy, and weve already conquered so much in such a short amount of time! - Better manners being led - Respecting personal space - Sending off with a point - Drawing in on cue - Step & point direction change - Disengaging the hind - Starting to desensitise Hes settled in really well here and were getting to know him better and better each day. He even put his head in my arms for a cuddle this afternoon after his session in the roundpen - what a sweetheart! . 09.01.2022 Hey everyone! . So, great news - my appointment went well and I'm all clear to be back in action again #happydance . My scar is still looking and feeling a bit fresh, so I've been told to take it slow and work my way up to full workouts, and I can ride when I feel strong enough. I'd be riding tomorrow if I had something quiet to sit on - but you know me, I don't shy away from a challenge ... . Yesterday was my first day back at work; horses all had rugs swapped over, got de-wormed, we got all the harrowing done, did a re-jig of Bonsey's diet, and left a message with our equine physio to give the boys a once over. . I wrote up my plan for the year, and had a big think about what to do with Polka... I almost advertised him out for another free lease, (litterally wrote out and deleted 3 adds ) but I think I'll bring him into work and enjoy him myself. It's so hard when you want to see them off finding their potential etc but lack the time yourself. It's tricky with Poke, as he's a real bugger when not getting enough work, and he really needs 3-4 rides per week or its not even worth bothering at all... When he's in work he's gorgeous to ride, so I might persevere and see how we go - I keep saying he looks good in the jumping gear, so maybe he can be my freshmans horse this winter! . I did my first workout this morning - well, more of a 'test the waters' than break a sweat, but felt really good! I survived 4 x 1min supine planks, 2 x 10 squats, and 2 x 30sec side planks. I don't have much core strength, but what I do have is a starting point and a goal! Deep tissue work is going great, session number 4 this morning, and way less trigger points . 08.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Another massive day here today, Im definitely earning my Easter chocolate! . We started with unrugging and giving hay out to everyone, checking waters, washing more rugs, and giving the laneway a mow.... Dakota came around and got Polka out for a ride, and after warming him up I gave her a bit of a mini lesson to help her do a bit of fine-tuning. They look fantastic and are shaping up to be a match made in heaven! . Kodes kindly helped me clean and re-dress Geoffreys wounds which have healed up beautifully. Hes been hooning around the paddock with no lameness in sight all week, so hell be coming in for groundwork tomorrow morning! . I managed to sneak in a ride on the pocket rocket before feed-out, and as usual she was amazing. We had a play with trot-canter transitions, 20m circles and leg yields, and she worked her socks off. 08.01.2022 Beautiful Bonesy . Today was an easy day for him with a nice stretch on the lunge out in the open This was to see what he was like out of the round yard, give him a look at the dressage markers, and see how he worked with a whole lot more distractions. He was great! .... We measured him up to fit my dressage saddle to him, not surprising that he needed a wide gullet put in! Hes beefed up quite a bit this week and Im really happy with him so far - I think hell be a tank in full work! . Physio is booked this week to check both ott boys backs and give them a coming into work massage. Its always good to make sure there are no issues there before you start! . Geoffie had another groundwork session this morning and knocked it out of the ballpark, and we fitted him into a saddle so he can start some work soon too. Its all happening here this week! 08.01.2022 Hi everyone! . Today was the most gorgeous day - exactly what we've been wishing for! . We used it to get a few jobs knocked over - Jay finished painting the round yard and both tie up rails, and I struck some new willow tree cuttings and got all the mowing done ... . We've got our next big property improvement going in some time in the next couple of weeks, so there's been lots of mowing, edging, and weed spraying to get that area prepared and looking nice. I'm SO excited to share before and after photos with you guys when it all happens, but it'll be a great asset to us as far as being able to take on more client horses for training next year! . We've popped Bonsey in the arena paddock for him to eat the grass down, so not only was he grateful for the green grass - it's less mowing for me to do! He's starting to pick back up and is looking good after a long, hard winter. Just about time to get the lunging gear out and bring him back into work - and Polka, too! . 07.01.2022 Surprise! . A big part of why Im not riding (aside from the mud and crap weather) is that were expecting baby number two! . Our girl Ella is super excited to be a big sister, so now it looks like we may be up for two ponies now ... . Weve had a big week here getting carpets installed in the house and planning our next lot of house renovations. The last few years have been focused on outdoor renos with fencing, shed works, the round yard etc, so as promised - this year was about the house. 07.01.2022 #honestpost . Hey everyone! . Today we had Geoffrey back in for his third groundwork session.... The original plan was to do it at liberty in the round-pen, but after he decided to almost bowl me over on the lead this morning - it became an inland lesson . This guy originally seemed the quieter one of the two, but the saying a safe horse is always quiet, but a quiet horse isnt always safe definitely rings true! . Hes got a lovely nature, but when something distracts him, he has the tendency to forget the person in front of him and either barge through, or swing his head. This is exacerbated when hes taken away from his mates, as he has separation anxiety (which I knew when I bought him). . All of these are easy enough to fix, but require veeeery black and white boundaries, and lots of patience . The reason I did todays session with the rope halter and lead was so I could take back a bit of control. At liberty he just runs, and is happy to ignore the flag and barrel on through. Being on the lead means that I can stop him by forcing him to disengage the hind, and actively take the pressure off when he gets it right - and wouldnt you know it, we made progress . I forced the disengage a few times - asked nicely, was ignored, and then in a quick motion I ask again, tip the nose, and wave the flag aggressively once at the back end. This swings their hind away, and theyll stop and face up. When they stop, I release the pressure and back off. . I only had to do this a couple of times before hed disengage with the suggestion alone, which means hes starting to pay attention and catch on . 06.01.2022 Barney . Today little Barney stepped into my office for bootcamp day 1, and I was really pleasantly surprised with him! . He hasn't had much handling and has a few quirks on the ground - mostly just nervous and pushy which are things we can easily fix.... There was also a bit of attitude last night at feed time, but we had a little chat about that and I think he knows the rules now . This morning we started him off at a trot in the round pen - he's definitely got more woah than go, bless him! This may change as we get more weight on him and get him a bit fitter, but for a kids pony I'm just fine with that. He's a lovely little mover though . We kept our session short, as it wouldn't be very fair to run an unfit pony laps upon laps, but we achieved loads in that first play! . Point and go cue Turn in to change direction Draw in to rest Starting to disengage the hind . I was able to approach him and rub his neck on both sides - this took a bit of gentle persuasion though, but the old approach and retreat method eventually did its trick. He actually started stepping towards me when I approached him, and relaxing when I rubbed his neck, dropping his head, and giving me sleepy eyes which was great to see . I really like him so far, he's quite smart and seems to have a sweet nature. I think he's going to be a lovely little guy once he comes out of his shell a bit more! . 06.01.2022 Is anyone else here as big a wuss as me when it gets cold and wet?! Its not even winter yet and Im already freezing my butt off! . This week in the Valley weve had 100ml of rain, and for the first time in 7 years, we actually have MUD on our farm - we never get mud here! . Hopefully that means lots of grass though, a huge positive is how great the hay paddock is looking at the moment - itll be so good to bale our own this year ... . Another cold day here today, but not much rain thankfully. Its still too wet to work horses, so will be another odd-jobs day today; hay run, check waters, check rugs, a tidy up, check the new trees, oil some gear, and then feed out . 05.01.2022 Huge day today - Bonesy is officially under saddle . I honestly cant fault this horse, hes seriously SUCH a legend. Today we were only supposed to be fitting his gear, but Jay convinced me to have a little sit... To be fair, it didnt take much convincing .... He felt lovely, his trot is huge to ride and he was only really plodding along in the round yard. A couple of months of strengthening and regular work Im sure hell be a powerhouse . Tomorrow Ill see if we have a dressage saddle here to fit him - Im a bit out of practice being in the jump saddle! The only other thing I need to organise is another body protector since Ive shrunk out of this one. The @racesafeeq vests look really comfortable - has anyone else tried them? . 05.01.2022 Hey everyone! . Another huge couple of days here on the farm - as soon as we get nice days we go crazy getting things done! . Yesterday both thoroughbreds came in for groundwork. Bonsey was amazing as usual, and because of the foundation weve laid - he hardly batted an eye for whip desensitising ... . Ive got one of those carrot stick things rather than a proper whip, as I find theyre easy to handle - and they make a loud noise when you whip the ground. Initially he wasnt impressed, but within minutes in he was happy for me to fling it over his back without so much as a flinch. Ive also been desensitising his ears as he hates the near side ear being touched. He may possibly have been ear twitched at some point in his life, but either way its something we can help him get over . Geoffreys first ground work took much longer than Bonseys did by comparison. We found hed rather run himself to death or turn his ass to me than turn in and rest - we did get there eventually though! Round 2 tomorrow morning - Ill report back with my findings! . Dakotas had a couple of dressage lessons this week and is going great guns with a few things weve been working on Riding corners, more accurate 20m circles, correct leads, and better transitions. SUPER proud of how well shes riding! . And last but not least - today we pulled a fence line out to increase our riding area to 60m to set a dressage arena up! 05.01.2022 Bonsey boy . What a gem this boy is! We had a short and sweet ride today as it was one of those I have a million things to do today days . A quick lunge both ways before Jay boosted me on, and we just refreshed what we did yesterday - walk, trot, and bendy-bendy while travelling forward. ... . He was really quiet today, and a bit less sensitive - we gave him a quick fibre feed before his ride to give his stomach an acid buffer. This is a great idea for any riders to do, especially if youre like me and take forever to tack up or get chatting . 04.01.2022 Barney . Day 3 of bootcamp for this cool little dude today, and more positive progress was made . We picked up where we left off yesterday with the approach and retreat stuff, and after a bit of initial stand-offishness he let his guard down to me again and relaxed.... . He's now dropping his head when I give him a rub between the eyes which is a lovely sign, and he let me rub both sides of his neck down to the wither. He's not thrilled about his back being touched, but he nervously tolerated it for me today. Thinking positively - his neck was out of bounds just a couple of days ago and look at us now; progress is progress, no matter how slow! . I'm really looking forward to getting a brush to him to get all the dead hair off his back, and getting a rug on him in time for winter. If I can get him desensitised enough during the week I'll be able to measure him up - anyone want to have a crack at his height and rug size?! . I'm going to put my guesses out there at 11.1 and 4'6 - I'm great at guessing thoroughbred heights and rug sizes, but noooo idea when it comes to ponies! . It was so lovely to get outside again, Ella and I are both dying of colds, so I like to think the fresh air and sunshine did us some good! . 04.01.2022 Absolutely loving life at the moment with our new additions - the place is finally starting to feel like a working horse property . Our days now comprise of morning checks; breakfast for the off the track boys, hay to everyone, water top ups, mucking out, and rugs off as needed. At least 2 usually get worked, ones getting medicine and wounds dressed, and 3 days a week Im teaching! Afternoons are the same again - feeds, waters, hay, rugs, and any other odd jobs that ne...ed tending to . Today after working Bonesy we snuck lunch in, did some harrowing and a paddock re-shuffle, and with my last free hour I got Tazzie out for a flatwork session which she absolutely smashed . Shes such a cool little lady, at the moment were working on improving her transitions between trot to canter, and having a play with transitions within the trot which has been loads of fun. Shes quite sensitive without being silly, so its been easy to teach her a few nifty tricks. . Next week well get the dressage markers out and have a play with a few tests - should be loads of fun! . 04.01.2022 Hey everyone, hope you're all going great! . It's been such a huge, productive week here for us, and it's got me feeling SO positive and motivated! . Today we had Polka, Bonesy, and Barney all treated by our awesome bodyworker; suuuuper proud of little Barney behaving like an absolute champ! ... I'd booked the other two in, and the little guy was a bit of a 'see how he is on the day' kind of sitch. He was happy to be caught first time, and ended up being an absolute gentleman for us. . All three had a few niggles that needed to be fixed, Poke needs a few days off, but Bonesy's ready to go when I am! . Our fence man came today to start our next lot of works here at the farm, and so far I'm pretty excited to see my vision coming together! I can't wait to share it with you all, along with my plans for it . It's also been a great week for catching up with my favourite people, a couple of my most special friends, and my lovely Mum. 03.01.2022 Hey everyone! . This Friday just gone officially marked my 6 weeks post baby - time is flying! Because I had a C-section, I haven't been allowed to excersise, lift anything, or even drive my car, so it's been really nice to have that little bit of freedom back again .... I have my 6 week check on Wednesday to clear me for excersise; I've had some pain around my scar and had a big abdominal tear during pregnancy, so hopefully everything has healed enough to get cracking with physio! . I started with the first of what will be many deep tissue massage sessions yesterday, and although it hurt - you can't rebuild without clearing the rubble first, am I right?! . Feeling super positive about getting my strength and fitness back again, and then the next step will be getting back on a horse. I can't wait!! . We've re-booked our fence man to do a big job at the farm which I'm super excited about, and once that's all done I'll have some more really cool news to share with you guys! . 03.01.2022 Oh haaaaayyyyy... . What an exciting time on our little farm - our first time cutting our own hay! Those who have been following us for a while might remember the big repair job we did on the back paddock late in 2019... .... We started off with an unusable, bumpy paddock that was full of deep crop trenches, and had it dug up with power harrows, re-seeded for hay, and flattened out . Now not only have we got a great supply of hay for the year, we also have a big, flat area that's safe to ride on - who thinks we need to set a jumping course or some grids up out there? . For the moment Bonsey's out there enjoying the remaining hay scraps (while Polka enviously watches on), and in a few weeks we'll bring both boys in to prep for work! . 02.01.2022 Bonsey boy . Today was day two of bootcamp for Bonsey, and what a superstar he was again! . First time back in the lunging gear, and he didn't miss a beat - a bit unfit (not that I can talk! ) but super honest and tried really hard for me.... A few sessions like this will help balance him back up again and rebuild all that muscle tone in no time . I'm back 'in work' as well; last night was my first night back in the home gym, and I pushed through my whole physio programme without stopping I'm using @ironedgetraining resistance bands again, and focusing on building my quads, glutes, and core. The aim of the game is building strength and stability, rather than worrying about weight loss. That will happen on its own along the way. . I was able to pick up where I left off with the hardest band, and I hadn't lost any flexibility either which I'm stoked about. My tummy held up really well, and I had no pain or tightness around my C-section scar either... I think I'm back in business! . 02.01.2022 Hi everyone! . Today was the most gorgeous day - exactly what weve been wishing for! . We used it to get a few jobs knocked over - Jay finished painting the round yard and both tie up rails, and I struck some new willow tree cuttings and got all the mowing done ... . Weve got our next big property improvement going in some time in the next couple of weeks, so theres been lots of mowing, edging, and weed spraying to get that area prepared and looking nice. Im SO excited to share before and after photos with you guys when it all happens, but itll be a great asset to us as far as being able to take on more client horses for training next year! . Weve popped Bonsey in the arena paddock for him to eat the grass down, so not only was he grateful for the green grass - its less mowing for me to do! Hes starting to pick back up and is looking good after a long, hard winter. Just about time to get the lunging gear out and bring him back into work - and Polka, too! . Huge thank you to everyone for your continued support while Im off riding - week 22 of my pregnancy starts on Monday, so Im over the halfway point and on the business end of it now . 02.01.2022 Aw Geoffrey . Today we got that first ride done, and he was such a good kid! Brakes and steering all work at a walk and trot, and he was a lot more comfortable than I thought hed be .... Its a long way up there - I havent been on a horse this tall in years! Hell be lovely when we get some softness and power steering installed - Im super excited to see how he comes along! . Lots to work on, but I genuinely quite like him. Looking forward to getting him working in the arena paddock over the next few days to see what he can do . 02.01.2022 Barney . This pony is just awesome, what a little legend he's turning out to be! . Today we had a play with a few tools, the rope, the horsemanship stick and string (try saying that ten times fast!), and the flag stick. Once again I was expecting a big reaction, but the worst he did was back away a few steps and then stop - pretty good! ... . This was a little snippet of video from our play with the flag stick, a little desensitising and sensitising exercise. Technically he should have disengaged, (stepped across and over with his inside hind) but this was an early attempt. We did get there, of course when the camera wasn't rolling . The point of this exercise is to get the thinking side of his brain working, rather than the fight or flight side. I should be able to wave the flag stick around carelessly, make noise etc with it, and it shouldn't mean anything to him unless it comes with a cue. It's a bit of a Simon Says game . The end goal for Barney is to eventually become a kids pony, so he has to learn to chill and use his brain when faced with something scary. God only knows what he'll be faced with when dealing with kids, so this is the start of teaching him work calmly while something stressful is going on, and I was so, so proud of him . We desensitised him to the measuring stick as well, and my guess of 11.1hh was WAY off - he's actually 12.1 ish! My rug guess of 4'6 will probably be way off as well, but I'll keep you all posted once I'm able to measure him up so we can all have another laugh at my pony noob-ness! . 01.01.2022 Aw Geoffrey . What a journey Ive had with this horse... So many ups and downs - and I havent even been on his back yet! . As I say - every struggle is an opportunity to learn and step up - and today was no exception. My little man FINALLY had that light bulb moment weve been waiting for.... Well, not even a light bulb moment - its more like he slept on it, and woke up today deciding he was going to give this weird little blonde human a bit of a chance... I know, I was surprised, too! . - He led politely without rushing through the gate or crowding me - He stood tied up without calling out or having a melt down - He stood politely and waited, rather than bolting off when I let him go in the round yard - He worked beautifully, turning in with every direction change - And he EVEN started disengaging the hind . SO impressed with this kid - what a black and white change from our Thursday session. He obviously needed that bit of a reality check I think . Feeling inspired and positive now that Ive seen this other side of Geoffie, looking forward to doing more tomorrow! .
