25.01.2022 Please sign. Granting refugees only temporary visas is a travesty. Permanent residency enables a genuine chance to establish a safe and meaningful future and capacity to contribute.

18.01.2022 A good try but a sad decision for all of those who continue to suffer in indefinite detention: "The first category of relief sought by the plaintiff, namely a writ of habeas corpus for his release from the Immigration Detention facility, is hopeless. The premise of this claim is that the plaintiff’s detention is discretionary. It is not. His detention is required by ss 189 and 196(1) of the Migration Act until one of the events listed in s 196(1), which includes the grant o...f a visa, occurs. None of those events has occurred. Section 196(3) provides that [t]o avoid doubt, s 196(1) prevents the release, even by a court, of an unlawful noncitizen from detention in circumstances other than those provided." https://lnkd.in/gmrcfgN #immigration #law #justice #humanrights

15.01.2022 Today I received news of an AMAZING win at the Aust Admin Tribunal (AAT) and must share!!! My partner visa client came to me very late in the piece, with little paper work from her original application, which she and her partner had done themselves and was refused, at the second stage, in late 2018. After an initial discussion, I tried to gently let her know she was about to spend a lot of money for a likely failure. However she still wanted to go ahead. Trying to build a c...Continue reading

13.01.2022 RACS have done it again. Zaki Haidari, their Ambassador put a great question last night to the Q&A: Men, women and children have been left to rely on charities to survive. None of this makes any sense of me. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said we are all in this together, but will this Budget continue to leave us behind, too? It will be interesting to see what comes down in the budget on this very question as nearly 16000 refugees and asylum seekers currently face destitution. This should not be allowed to happen. https://twitter.com/QandA/status/1313075368069218304 #ItsLegalToSeekAsylum #NobodyLeftBehind

09.01.2022 On and on the vilification and abuse of innocent people goes. Dutton’s claim those in community detention are here because of rorting the system is utter rubbish. I represented many seriously ill people brought to Australia for care - pre the medevac bill - and who are now living in the community. They were found to be refugees under International law. Those legitimately transferred under that bill are in detention not getting the medical help they need. Dutton’s campaign of misinformation is nothing but bare-face lying. #enoughisenough #refugees #humanrights

09.01.2022 A great story!!!

08.01.2022 This is great news albeit once released these people from Manus and Nauru will have no financial support or housing. They have not been able to work for 8 years so will struggle to find a jobs and most have mental health issues after being locked up in indefinite limbo for 7.5 years. Its meanwhile a win win for the Govt. They can't deny the law so they are not voluntarily releasing people. The visas the men, families will be issued are of the most temporary variety - therefo...re they will 'not be settled in Australia'. They are not entitled to Govt support while rebuilding their shattered lives. So they are in effect continuing to be punished for doing nothing wrong. Finally the wasting of billions of Aust tax payer dollars on torturing people will end. No doubt Morrison will claim sound economic management. https://www.abc.net.au//first-asylum-seekers-mede/12969536 See more

07.01.2022 This is a great story. Only today I hung a cartoon of Ali’s, he gifted me and I had framed when back in Sydney. Offshore, indefinite detention nearly destroyed an amazing talent. Lucky Norway. Bad luck Australia.
