25.01.2022 I know many community groups are furiously working towards the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery (BLER) Fund deadline on 28 January. Many have told me the application process is onerous and difficult to navigate. In order to assist community groups, I wrote to the Australian National University, University of Wollongong and the University of Canberra late last year to see if their staff could assist with the grant writing in a voluntary capacity.... I’m delighted to say that many staff members have offered their support for free. If you would like to make use of this service, please contact my office at [email protected] and I can put you in touch. As we enter a new year, it’s humbling to know that people are still thinking of our community and how they can help. Let’s make this year a better one for all.

25.01.2022 It was great to welcome the first Qantas flight to Merimbula today with Bega Valley Shire Council Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick. This is the start of a new era for regional tourism and more choice for passengers. QantasLink will trial the Sydney and Merimbula route until October next year, flights between Merimbula and Melbourne are also expected to start shortly.... Qantas CFO Vanessa Hudson told the Merimbula News Weekly, "The South Coast is such a gem, with your beaches, the hinterland and the lovely food - everyone is going to love holidaying here." An interesting aside, the pilot, Captain Kyle Hazelbroek is a Moruya boy. 24.01.2022 No one counts down to holidays like school kids and it's great to be sharing their excitement this week. Quaama is a village that has coped with a lot this year and the school has been central to that strength and reliance. It was great to be back at Quaama Public School to present new flags that will fly proudly in the new year.... Only a few days to go now kids! Have a great holiday. This is not the festive season we’d hoped for, but one we are all still trying to make the most of....Continue reading

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Peter Coleborne from Pete's Swim School in Queanbeyan and Katrina Scarpin from Splash Swim Soar in Pambula both recognised by their peers for their commitment, skill, and energy at the AUSTSWIM Awards for Excellence last week. Peter won the NSW and National gong for Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety. Katrina won the NSW and National award for Teacher of Aquatics Access and Inclusion. Katrina writes, "I have been passionate about working with students ...with additional needs since I first became qualified as an instructor 23 years ago. I want to thank all of our families who put their trust in me and my sometimes unorthodox methods , and provide me with the honour of guiding your child through the process of achieving vital lifesaving skills, it’s truly the best feeling in the world!" The #MightyEdenMonaro at it again! Thanks for what you bring to our community Pete and Katrina.

23.01.2022 Eden-Monaro Grants Bulletin out now! Right across the #MightyEdenMonaro people are working hard to strengthen, deepen and sustain our local communities. Access to grant funding to support these diverse and dynamic plans is a common question as I meet with various groups. To support this work in our community, I have pulled together a comprehensive list of grants from the Australian Government, the NSW Government and philanthropic organisations.... Check out the Eden-Monaro Grants Bulletin here - https://www.kristymcbain.com.au/grants/grants/ Feel free to share it far and wide so we can get our fair share of funding. If my office can help please do not hesitate to get in touch via [email protected] Good luck with your grant application and thank you for what you do in our community. 23.01.2022 Just in time for a busy summer on the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail. Bike maintenance stations have been installed this week at Figures Street Tumbarumba and another one at Rosewood plus a stand-alone pump at Glenroy. This was a real community effort that involved the fellas from the Men's Shed who took care of the concrete slabs, the Hyne Timber Community Trust and All4cycling Australia.... Another reason to Visit Snowy Valleys. Photo: Bruce Wright from the Hyne Community Trust with Richard and Lloyd from All4cycling Australia.

23.01.2022 "Being able to go to the New Zealand School of Dance would be an absolute dream come true," says Murrumbateman's Angus Phillips-Higham. I am hopeful Kiwi immigration will reconsider their decision and allow Angus into the country. Thanks to Katie Burgess at The Canberra Times for adding weight to our advocacy.

22.01.2022 Please share and like if this would help you or someone you know - it’s direct help for people who lost everything. Labor is still pushing hard for the federal government’s HomeBuilder grant to be extended for those who lost their homes during our Black Summer. Come on Prime Minister, this would be a huge lift for people as anniversaries approach and a new year dawns.... Led by Anthony Albanese, Jason Clare, Fiona Phillips MP, Susan Templeman MP and myself we will keep the pressure on to do better for our community. Share, like, comment to help our campaign.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Mert and the team at Cafe Thirty 4 in Queanbeyan, winners in the Canberra Region Local Business Awards - Outstanding Cafe. It's hard to go wrong when it comes to a good cuppa in Queanbeyan, Mert and his team keep everyone on their toes. It's been a testing year for local businesses so it's nice to share some good news.... Photo: Queanbeyan City Travel and Cruise

22.01.2022 I was there at the start and it was even better to be there at the end. Friday saw the official opening of the new Clinical Training Facility at South East Regional Hospital with The Australian National University and the University of Canberra. These new facilities will allow for the delivery of health education and professional development for student nurses and doctors, health staff, and the community. A great collaboration between the government and both universities that... builds a health workforce for regional NSW. 21.01.2022 With the support of the Governor-General of Australia, those who were at our side during our Black Summer Bushfires are now eligible for the National Emergency Medal. Over the years, eligibility has been an issue for some volunteers within the emergency services. Through the work and advocacy of people like Anthorr a member of NSW SES - Sutton Unit and NSW SES Volunteers Association the system has been improved so that we are better able to recognise the extraordinary effort ...of organisations like the NSW SES, NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. NSW Rural Fire Service, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW, St John Ambulance and others. The women and men who answer the call don't do it for medals or recognition but it's important we find ways to show our appreciation and acknowledge their service. You can find out more here - https://www.gg.gov.au/bushfires-2019-20-responders-now-elig Photo: President Kim Davis and Vice President Shannon Crofton of the NSW SES Volunteers Association.

21.01.2022 What great smiles! Meet Lola and Connor Gregg from Googong with a great Christmas option, one that gives twice. You can buy these Christmas 'Jolly Socks' now from my Queanbeyan and Bega electorate offices, the money raised will help kids like Connor. Connor is almost 3 years old and has had 15 surgery’s in the last 18 months. He is living with a rare condition similar to Hirschsprung’s disease that impacts on his intestinal system.... I met with this little guy and his mum and dad David and Whitney earlier this year. Connor has complex medical needs that require him to travel to Melbourne for colonic manometry treatment as there are no manometry services in NSW. With typical Eden-Monaro strength, the Greggs are fundraising for manometry equipment at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. This technology allows specialists to better monitor changes in body pressure which is important for the healthy function of our oesophagus, duodenum, colon and anus. When these digestive systems are not operating the way they should the patient can experience reflux, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, severe bloating and pain and poor nutrition. I am hoping we can make some ground on the need for this equipment with both the NSW and Commonwealth Health Ministers but in the meantime, my Queanbeyan and Bega offices are selling ‘Jolly Socks’ in partnership with the Greggs part of their fundraising effort. Drop in and have a look at the bright, colourful range of socks. At $15 a pair, they make a great gift for you or someone special.

21.01.2022 This weekend presents an opportunity to catch up with Monaro Team Rural Fire Service and other local emergency services to talk about preparing your property and loved ones for future emergencies. Head along to Centennial Park, Cooma today (Nov 14) from 10am or tomorrow (Nov 15) at the Cooma Rotary Markets from 8:30am. Fire tankers will be on display, plus there'll be Bush Fire Survival Plans and other information to collect.... Being prepared and being informed is one of the best ways you can support our emergency services. Photo: FarmOnline.

21.01.2022 As the first anniversary of the Bega Valley's Black Summer approaches the Eden Killer Whale Museum has coordinated a terrific exhibition that looks to acknowledge the experience and inspire thinking and conversation that leads to renewal. It was my honour to open 'Looking Up and Around' which runs until February 14 and brings together artworks, photographs and fire affected objects that reflect the emotion of the time, the power of mother nature and the human spirit. The ti...tle of the exhibition comes from one of the famous artworks created by students at Towamba Public School, in particular 8-year-old Ky Whelan. The exhibition showcases around ten pieces from the school that convey the loss, environmental impact and rebuilding of place and hope - as interpreted by children from 5 to 11 years. Towamba artist, Vicki McCredie has been the kids guide and teacher on this journey and done some really important work. An online show of the full collection can be viewed from the Museum’s website - https://bit.ly/3rjy105 but there is nothing like seeing it in the real world. Copies of the works are available for purchase with all funds going to the Towamba Public School’s P&C. Drop into the museum these holidays as you process your own 2020 experience. Photos: The kids of Towamba including Ky Whelan with his work 'Looking Up and Around' and art teacher Vicki McCredie.

21.01.2022 And happy Christmas to you too Mick at Bristol Paint Specialist Pambula. Your card deserves so much more than my fridge!

21.01.2022 An extraordinary meeting with EOS - Electro Optic Systems whose roots are deep in the #MightyEdenMonaro. These guys started in Queanbeyan 30 plus years ago and are now global leaders in space, communications, and defence. Six sites around the world, 450 staff, most in the Canberra region. $200 million spent in R&D last year. 90% of their business is export but the jobs are right here. They need engineers and are working with local high schools and unis to build a workforce ...for the future. It’s good to make stuff Warwick told me today and I couldn’t agree more. EOS - Electro Optic Systems is something we can be proud of.

20.01.2022 ENERGY CUTTING, GREENHOUSE REDUCING GRANTS OPEN We are go on the ‘Powering Communities Grants Program’. The Powering Communities Program aims to help not-for-profit community organisations reduce energy use, improve energy productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.... Up to $67,700 is available to fund up to 12 projects in every electorate, including right here in the #MightyEdenMonaro. Our community has felt the impact of our changing climate, we are beyond ready to make the energy transition needed. I am determined to make sure no one is left behind as we make that adjustment. This grants program is one of many ways our community needs to be supported. Your EOI needs to be in before May 31, more info here - https://www.kristymcbain.com.au//powering-communities-pro/

20.01.2022 It was great to meet with the Carwoola Community Association on their home turf this week - being a country girl getting wet in the rain was not an issue. This is a community that knows the toll bushfire recovery can take having lost 8 homes in the fires of 2017. They are heartened by the 80 recommendations of the Bushfire Royal Commission and like us all - determined to see action follow. We also talked about the potential of more rail trails and walking tracks in the region, better work leave arrangements for emergency service volunteers, and of course better internet and mobile phone connectivity. These guys are 30km from Canberra and still don't have decent services.

20.01.2022 The motto of Rosewood Public School, NSW is "Always do your best" which seems to sum up the attitude of Sam Baker. Congratulations Sam on being awarded the Kristy McBain Service Award for 2020.... Regional communities like ours are built on community service, thank you for playing your part. As your service grows let me know how I can support you. It looks like you've got a good book there for the holidays - enjoy!

20.01.2022 Meantime in Eden-Monaro.... Snowy Hydro workers at Lobs Hole wanted more Christmas cheer on site as they push ahead with Snowy 2.0, so they added this little bit of feastive bling to one of the massive cranes building the Tunnel Boring Machine. Can you find it? Nice touch guys!

20.01.2022 The arts have long been a central part of our community but during the testing times of 2020 they have taken on a new and deeper level of importance. Those working at their particular arts practice understand the joys and benefits of feeding your creative spirit; more broadly 2020 has reminded the rest of the community of what the arts adds to life something that prior to the pandemic was perhaps taken for granted. We need to take this experience and recommit ourselves to s...upporting artistic education, appreciation and opportunity especially in regional communities like Eden-Monaro. Thank you to the Queanbeyan Art Society for what you bring to our community. Barry and Roseanna from the Queanbeyan Art Society have a sale and exhibition on now at their cottage on the banks of the Queanbeyan River.

20.01.2022 Labor has launched a child care calculator so that Australian families can find out how much cheaper child care will be when Anthony Albanese is Prime Minister. This new website is a useful tool for the over one million families that will be better off under Labor’s Cheaper Child Care Policy. Under this plan, Labor will: ... * Scrap the $10,560 child care subsidy cap which often sees women losing money from an extra day’s work; * Lift the maximum child care subsidy rate to 90 per cent; and * Increase child care subsidy rates and taper them for every family earning less than $530,000. Crunch your families numbers here - https://www.childcarecalculator.com.au/

19.01.2022 A catch like this would make any fisherman smile but to then find out it's carrying a Kristy McBain tag and worth $500 as part of the Snowy Trout Challenge adds goosebumps. It was great to meet Nathan in Jindabyne this week and hand over his cash - spent already in the run up to Christmas. This very popular event is creating smiles right across Snowy Monaro waterways. There are more Kristy McBain swimmers out there so get your mates together and go fishing!... Thank you to all the sponsors who have made this possible, and to the Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce for your energy at the end of a testing year. Everything you need to know about the Snowy Trout Challenge is here - https://bit.ly/2IZp9vm Happy fishing! Photo: With Nathan and Olivier Kapetanakos from the Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce.

19.01.2022 This house on the hill sits to the south west of Cobargo. The orange skies that surround it are familiar to all in our wider Eden-Monaro community. The time we shared under these skies between late November 2019 and early February 2020 looms large in the life of our region. Some people and places have already marked the anniversary of their bushfire experience; I was with the Braidwood-Bombay community a few weeks ago with Anthony Albanese almost 12 months to the day since ...fire destroyed local homes, pastures, livestock, bush land and wildlife. But as we approach New Year’s Eve and the first days of 2021, communities including Cobargo, Quaama, Kiah, Pericoe, Nerrigundah, Tumbarumba, Baltow and surrounds will be reflecting on the day that changed their lives forever. There is no right or wrong way to mark these anniversaries. These occasions will stir emotions and they will continue to do so with every year that passes. They are an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved, to support one another, and to share thoughts and feelings. It is okay not to feel okay around these occasions and I would encourage anyone struggling through this time to reach out for support. I hope that what comes from this period is a restored energy to rise to the challenges that remain. It’s easy to be buried by what has been lost, but what I take from this photo of the house on the hill is how much remains the house, the proud trees that surround it, and the family who loves it. This home and photo belong to photographer Ben Marden. Ben’s wife, Amrei lost her yoga business on the main street of Cobargo. Ben and his family took the Yankee’s Gap Fire of 2018 as a huge wake-up call and steadily prepared their property over the 18 months that followed, prior to the 2019 New Year’s Eve fire. When the flames came, Ben was in a position to stay and defend the historic weatherboard house and eight other old timber buildings. Looking at this photo with that knowledge, I am reminded of what we can all do to make ourselves safer and more resilient in the future. Those preparations will be different for each person and each family based on their circumstances but let’s not let the lessons of our experience 12 months ago disappear with time. For advice, start with the NSW Rural Fire Service and Australian Red Cross websites - https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare and https://www.redcross.org.au/prepare Not every home that was well prepared was spared from the flames but let’s put ourselves in the best position we can moving forward. However you choose to mark this time, know that you are not alone, every person in this community has their own personal experience; we face the future together. For mental wellbeing and support talk to Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, or headspace on 1800 650 890. Photo: Ben Marden Photography, BenMarden.com.au

19.01.2022 T4A - Turbans 4 Australia are at it again in the #MightEdenMonaro delivering good cheer and friendship to our bushfire impacted communities on their toy run. First stop was Sapphire Community Pantry and Quaama Bushfire Relief Community Notice Board/Centre. I caught up with them in Narooma on their way down the coast. These guys have been with us from the very start, cooking meals and delivering supplies and tools to the Bega Valley throughout 2020.... New friends have been created through the challenges we have faced this year. Thank you T4A - Turbans 4 Australia.f

19.01.2022 Congratulations to Olivia Stroud from St Patrick's Primary School Bega winner of the Kristy McBain Citizenship Award for 2020. Meeting and talking to kids like Olivia right across the #MightyEdenMonaro is a great shot in the arm. Thanks for being you Olivia and for the contribution you make to our community, I can't wait to see what your future holds. Stay in touch.

18.01.2022 On the final sitting day of the year I was given 5 minutes to reflect on 2020 - impossible! Thank you to the people of the #MightyEdenMonaro who have shown such perseverance in the face of so many great challenges....

18.01.2022 Trusty Treats is a delicious new service from The Disability Trust in the Bega Valley and they were a big hit this week at our last Labor Caucus meeting for 2020. The plan is to support people with disability to develop and operate their own business venture. Participants are supported to cook, market and sell their own produce, which includes bliss balls and truffles, AKA 'Amazeballs'. Get your orders in now! Call 6413 5460. ... Check out the box I took to Parliament House this week, a mix of healthy bliss balls and sweet treats including Mars Bar crackles, choc/coconut, plum puddings, coconut ice and salted caramel. Thanks guys! Photos: Kristina Keneally, Linda Burney, Richard Marles MP and Anthony Albanese. And Angela Kennedy and Katie Harris from The Disability Trust Bega delivering my Trusty Treats.

16.01.2022 A date for the diary - the Arbour Festival launches December 28 at Pilot Hill Arboretum, within the Bago State Forest near Tumut, Tumbarumba and Batlow, a miraculous survivor of our Black Summer. The line up includes the one and only Fanny Lumsden.

16.01.2022 Once again our friends from Victoria are headed home from the #MightyEdenMonaro early. Thank you for coming, please travel safe. You will always be welcome. Stay strong, I know you are sad to be leaving us, you needed that holiday! As the sun sets on 2020, local businesses are feeling it as well. Some have phoned me upset and wanting to share their anxiety. I am with you now and everyday while we work through the next chapter.... What we know is that the Victorian Government will close its border with NSW from 11.59pm on 1 January 2021. Under the changes, any Victorian in the Green Zone - including in the Bega Valley Shire, Snowy Monaro and Snowy Valleys returning before 11:59pm on 31 December 2020, will need to get tested and self-isolate at home until they get a negative test result. The Victorian Government will confirm arrangements for border communities soon. 16.01.2022 This Christmas will stir a mix of feelings in our community, that’s natural and something we will all be mindful of. One positive to emerge from 2020 is the acceptance of mental health support and the need to work on our wellbeing. These holidays are an opportunity to talk, share our thoughts and feelings and recharge. Thank you to our emergency services, charities, community groups, government agencies and health care workers who have responded to the needs of 2020 with sk...ill and dignity while also managing their own trauma. We hope to see you out and about enjoying the wonders of our beautiful backyard these holidays and look forward to taking the lessons of 2020 with us into 2021 and contributing to a stronger future for all. Take care Kristy, Brad, Ruby, Max, and Jack PS: My offices will be closed from December 24 and will reopen on January 4. Artwork by Catfish Creative, Narooma.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to all the groups who worked so hard to meet the December 11 deadline for the Bushfire Communities Recovery and Resilience Fund. The next big deadline is January 28 for the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund. If the ‘Letters of Support’ I’ve been writing are anything to go by, groups from Narooma, to Wonboyn, to Batlow, Tumbarumba, and Braidwood are in there having a red hot go. But the feedback I’ve been hearing is that the process around these grant appli...cations is overly complicated and onerous especially for people dealing with a year of trauma. It’s disheartening for weary people and groups. Every aspect of our community has been touched by our Black Summer and all deserve their fair share. I’ve been raising these issues with the relevant state and federal ministers and with the National Bushfire Recovery Agency. I’ll be pushing hard in the new year for a separate round of recovery grants just for not-for-profit, volunteer based groups. While 2020 is coming to an end, the work that flows from it goes on in 2021 and I will stay at your side. If you or someone you know has an idea that needs support, there are a range of options to explore in my grants bulletin - https://kristymcbain.com.au/grants/grants/ Artwork: 'Burnt Gums' by 5 year old Ottilie Richardson of Towamba Public School.

15.01.2022 Good fishing off Narooma at the moment according to Charter Fish Narooma. They also report that the water out at the island is warming up and super clear - perfect for snorkelling with the seals!

15.01.2022 I will stand with these guys any day of the week - NSW SES Bega Valley Units, NSW SES Bermagui Unit and NSW SES Eden Unit. All three units gathered last week to reflect on a year they described as "cataclysmic" - unprecedented is getting a bit tired isn't it! I was also very proud to present Local Commander Michelle De Friskbom with a National Emergency Medal for her contribution during Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017.... 45 local members also received the NSW Premiers Bushfire Citation for their amazing efforts during our Black Summer. 2020 has been a real test for our community, but we are getting through it with the support of NSW SES volunteers right across the #MightyEdenMonaro. Thank you.

14.01.2022 We should all celebrate the fact that the NDIS is now available to all eligible Australians. The scheme, born of great Labor leaders like Jenny Macklin, Bill Shorten and Julia Gillard is now assisting 400,000 people. However, the challenges people with disabilities face in their day to day lives should not be compounded by a scheme designed to enrich their lives - and that's what I am hearing from some people in our community. ... As we look to renew and strengthen our community in the wake of prolonged drought, bushfires, and COVID-19 the potential of the care economy is obvious. We need to commit ourselves to the continual improvement and proper funding of the NDIS. I was very proud to draw on the example set by Tulgeen Disability Services today in parliament...

14.01.2022 The Independent Bushfire Group is a group of non-aligned bushfire practitioners who advocate for better fire management with a focus on practical firefighting, science and evidence-based practices as we adapt to our worsening fire climate. This local brains trust includes former National Parks and Wildlife staff like Tim Shepard and Steve Dovey. The group made a really valuable submission to the Bushfire Royal Commission and it was great to meet with them and get their insigh...ts on the 80 recommendations. Increased capacity to jump on remote fires while they are small is one point that sticks in my mind. Local experience needs to be heard - that's what I'm here for.

14.01.2022 Tender Funerals Canberra Region is a not for profit, community led approach to funeral care that will service the #MightyEdenMonaro including - Queanbeyan, Yass, Bungendore, Braidwood and Cooma. I've just met with Catherine, Tui and Ellen about their vision which is building great momentum. They are currently trying to raise $150,000 to unlock some big dollars that will secure premises and help it all happen. ... On Monday night at Palace Electric Cinema - New Acton they will be hosting a fundraising screening of the acclaimed documentary 'Tender' at 6pm, which gives the background to this compelling idea. Get your tickets and support this great community initiative here - https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=738404& If you can't make the screening and want to know more or chip in - https://chuffed.org/project/tender-funerals-canberra

14.01.2022 Nice photo bomb Jack! Working from home on the last day of the school holidays. Thanks for always being at my back buddy!

14.01.2022 A passion for the future of regional communities is what drives me so it was a boost to hang out with the crew at CUC Snowy Monaro in Cooma. The idea of a Country Universities Centre started right here in the #MightyEdenMonaro. In 2021 the network of centres will grow to 15, taking in regional communities across NSW, Queensland and Victoria. In Cooma, the centre has supported 416 students since opening in 2013. This year alone 159 students studied through the Cooma Centre at ...29 different Australian universities. Of those, 40% are the first in their family to go to uni - just like me. These guys have an even bigger vision for the future and I look forward to working with them and creating options for country kids.

13.01.2022 We still have many, many blackspots to fill in but I am pleased to hear news that a new mobile base station has been switched on today at Delegate. It's hoped the new base station will provide over 20 square kilometres of new and improved 3G and 4G mobile coverage primarily along Delegate Road to areas that have been identified as having poor mobile coverage. This is especially important following last summer’s devastating bushfires and something I will keep banging the drum... about. A new round of the Mobile BlackSpot Program is taking submission now, I'll be fighting for our fareshare - stay tuned I am keen to work with you more on this.

13.01.2022 The Land reports, "The forestry industry was devastated in last summer's bushfires and now the future of towns like Tumbarumba, who rely heavily on the industry, hang in the balance." "A campaign named, TimbaforTumba is lobbying the government to help the industry through the next three years and ensure its recovery in the region." I hosted a delegation from Timberfortumba in Parliament House last week, the group got a good hearing from the government, together we'll keep pushing for soloutions that secure our community's future.

13.01.2022 Wow - I can't wait for the rest of the community to see what I have just seen. The restoration of the Hotel Australasia in the heart of Eden is really taking shape under the guidance of Neil Rankin and his team. It's been a bumpy road for the community at times but the vision many have always believed in is taking shape.... This grand old dame is on her way back and ready to be part of our region's renewal.

13.01.2022 Back in Parliament House banging the drum for Eden-Monaro in the final sitting week of the year. Thank you to everyone who has sent me a postcard from their part of the #MightyEdenMonaro, when I walk into my office they remind me of who I am here for. Staff and other MPs are stopping to ask questions about the places they see - its a bit a stealthy tourism marketing!... As you can see there is still some room in the window. Post to PO Box 214 Queanbeyan 2620 or PO Box 1233 Bega 2550. Have a good week.

12.01.2022 Eden-Monaro COVID-19 Update, 6:30pm, January 1 A new year with challenges we have faced and overcome before. Alerts are now in place for locals and visitors in the Bega Valley after two people from Victoria tested positive for COVID-19 after attending venues in Bermagui and Eden. ... NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant says the Victorian pair dined at: Great Southern Hotel in Eden on Wednesday 30 December between 5pm and 6:30pm Bermi’s Beachside Cafe in Bermagui on Thursday 31 December between 9am and 10am. NSW Health says anyone who attended either venue at these times is a casual contact and must get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result. You should continue to monitor for symptoms and if any symptoms occur, get tested again. Contact tracing is underway for both venues. Testing is available at the following locations from January 2: Bermagui’s Dickinson Oval, from 10:00am to 3:00pm Eden Community Health Twofold car park, Bass Street Eden, from 10:00am to 2:00pm South East Regional Hospital in Bega from 8:00am to 7:00pm You can contact the COVID-19 Support Line on 1800 318 248 for further advice or stay up to date via NSW Health at https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19 Right across the #MightyEdenMonato please stick with the COVIDSafe rules that have helped reduce the risk so far. On top of that, watch out for your family and friends. We have all been carrying a lot, keep talking, keep connected, keep informed. Take care.

12.01.2022 Story of the week... Magda Szubanski visits Snowy Valleys bringing laughs and support along the way; crashing the Tumbarumba Australian Football and Netball Club Christmas party as who else but Sharon Strzelecki and showing her support for the Timberfortumba campaign. THANK YOU MAGDA!

12.01.2022 Picking up a treat in Queanbeyan for the kids after two big weeks in parliament, and look who I bump into - Emma McBride MP on her way home to her Central Coast electorate. Thanks for the rocky road Christmas tree Bean Central it’s sure to be a hit and win me some love. Happy travels Emma, I am so proud to be part of the Labor team with you.

12.01.2022 The Victorian Government has announced that from 5.59pm tonight Regional New South Wales will become orange and will move out of the red zone. It means Victorians currently in regional NSW will be able to apply for permits to travel back home tonight. The 'border bubble' arrangements remain in place - exemptions continue for local residents who are able to cross with photo ID.

12.01.2022 I can't wait to visit Jindy on Tuesday and would love you to join me for a free cuppa and chat.

12.01.2022 Before it gets crazy busy on our waterways, parliament stopped last week to thank our surf life savers for their commitment to our community and to encourage all Australians to make water safety a priority this summer. An unacceptable number of drownings occur during summer with Australians making the most of our stunning coastline, pools, rivers and lakes. Last season there were 248 drownings across Australia, with 39% of all drownings occurring during December, January and ...February. We’ve had enough trauma in 2020, please swim between the flags and listen to life savers. 11.01.2022 Advice for those in the Mila area, south of Bombala This fire is still burning at advice level and is currently out of control.

11.01.2022 Eden-Monaro COVID-19 Update, 6:00 PM, January 2 Plenty to take in again today as COVIDSafe plans between NSW - Victoria and the ACT evolve and become part of our life for the time being. 11.01.2022 Meet Katara Dempsey-Penrith from Brungle Public School, the winner of the Kristy McBain Citizenship Award for 2020. Katara is in Year 2 and is "a kind, considerate and very caring young girl in our Brungle community." Thanks for being who you are and doing what you do Katara, I'll watch with interest as you grow. Let me know if I can ever help with something.... Have a great holiday!

10.01.2022 Meantime in Eden-Monaro! This from Sapphire Coast NSW... "This Merimbula local is looking sharp on their morning beach stroll! According to key witnesses, this cutie was drying off after a spring dip! Surprisingly, echidnas are adept swimmers, with unique back feet that act as a natural rudder system. They swim to cool down, groom themselves or simply play. All sensible weekend activities! Spotted aboard Merimbula Marina."... That's a wrap on another great Eden-Monaro weekend. 10.01.2022 News that GP clinics are in crisis across Eden-Monaro (and beyond) has lit a fire under the need for reform to ensure regional communities have access to health services. It's a shame it's taken the imminent closure of the Bombala clinic to get that attention. I've just met with Dr Joanne Copland, Dr Domonic Manassa and Dr Hamish Steiner (pictured) who manage clinics in Cooma and Bombala. ... Local GPs tell me that small GP clinics are no longer viable and that we need to find new ways of delivering and funding regional health. I’ve written to Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt asking for an urgent solution and will be working with my local counterparts in the NSW Government to find a solution that covers Bombala and the rest of the region now and into the future. The only thing keeping GP clinics going in some of our local towns is the dedication and community spirit of doctors, nurses and staff. The pressure on these people is not healthy or fair. Close to 300 people have already signed my petition calling for action, thank you. You can add your weight to my advocacy here - https://www.kristymcbain.com.au//save-our-regional-health/

09.01.2022 One of the needs I hear loud and clear from the Googong community is the need to get going on Dunns Creek Road, but I am concerned if the NSW Government doesn’t act soon the parcel of land earmarked for the project will be sold off. This vital transport corridor has been talked about for over a decade in the Queanbeyan-Jerrabomberra community and with the boom happening at Googong the need is escalating. Existing roads in and out of Canberra through Jerrabomberra and Queanbey...an are becoming more congested during the morning and evening commute. They will face even more pressure in the future as Googong continues to grow; in 2039 the population of Googong will hit 18,000 people. I welcome the NSW Government’s support of the project to date and will continue to work with the Member for Monaro, John Barilaro to secure the land needed, which is currently in private ownership. The Dunns Creek Road project will address a need motorists see every day but will also act as a jobs stimulus as we renew the economy following drought, bushfires and COVID-19. 08.01.2022 You will find this hard to believe, Iam still shaking my head. The Minister for Employment and Skills Senator Michaelia Cash is considering a recommendation to do away with the on the job training component of apprenticeships. The tradies Brad and I have employed in our plumbing business and the apprentices I met with today don't want to be stuck in a classroom, all value the experience they get from being on the tools and putting their classroom experience to work. I stand... with the AMWU - Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union and hope the Minister will meet with them soon. Photo: Anthony, Issabelle, John and Eddy.

08.01.2022 Communities across our burnt landscape now have more time to prepare and apply for grants under the $250 million Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund. People have been asking for more time and I am pleased that the NSW and Commonwealth governments have responded to the call and extended the application deadline to January 28. An additional 12 months has also been provided for successful applicants to deliver their projects. Grants of between $200,000 and $20 million will be ...available for projects including: Restoration of bushfire impacted roads Local community and cultural infrastructure Community wellbeing and mental health programs Tourism campaigns and regional events Workforce adaptation and training programs Local infrastructure including walking and mountain bike trails Regeneration activities to support the local natural environment Neighbourhood safer places. 08.01.2022 Did you use the Bushfire.io App last summer? It was a source of info that I used in the craziness of those long days and I am proud to say its innovation that is born in the #MightyEdenMonaro. Mark and Tristan are on track for 1,000,000 downloads as the holidays approach, they are committed to pulling together relevant timely information from across state borders for this community. Congratulations guys.

07.01.2022 Businesses are desperately trying to renew their insurance policies but in the wake of the Black Summer bushfires they’re finding they’re either being rejected or asked to pay unaffordable premiums. Insurance underpins the investment and jobs we need for our renewal following drought, bushfires, floods and COVID-19. The market and the environment have been ringing the alarm bell for years. ... The canary in the coalmine died long ago and is now festering on the doorstep of households right around Eden-Monaro.

07.01.2022 Come with me on a tour of Snowy Hydro’s Tumut 2 power station. Given the history of this place and contribution it makes every day to our country there is a ‘presence’ in this place that goes beyond the fact you are 300 metres underground. I had the best tour guide, Kent Allen who has been with Snowy Hydro for 25 years. His energy for this place and his community is inspiring. ... It was a real thrill to be here when turbine 7 kicked into action in response to a need in the electricity market. Kent made the point that the lessons learnt over the last 70 years in this place are shaping the upgrades and power stations of the future. A real privilege to be in this place and be your eyes and ears.

07.01.2022 In amongst the craziness of 2020 it’s reassuring to know some things don’t change - like the cicadas at Mystery Bay.

07.01.2022 I take my hat off to the dedication of Franca, Ron, Allan and all who have developed plans for the long talked about Googong Sports and Recreation Club. The vision for this new development has been sustained by this ambitious community for eight years. Plans include function and meeting rooms, bar, bistro and café facilities, as well as changerooms and spectator amenities covering a wide range of junior and senior sports - netball, AFL, soccer, rugby, hockey and others. Asid...e from the jobs and economic benefits the club would bring there is also a great opportunity for community building and resilience not just through participation in the sporting clubs that will be involved but also the contribution the club will make to local charities and organisations once established. I am working with these guys to secure grant funding with construction hoped to start in 2022.

07.01.2022 UPDATED AT 2PM - TRAVEL PERMITS TO VICTORIA This is not the lead up to Christmas we have been hoping for. We are all affected in different ways, including my own family. We remain a registered Covid Safe business, with all the necessary health and hygiene measures in place, to keep our community safe and stop the spread. We would like to thank you for your support and look forward to welcoming you back. News from Bermi's Beachside Cafe: Back to work tomorrow Thursday 8am! We have taken a extra few days just to instill the confidence in the community for our front of house to receive another Negative COVID 19 result. This means that as of tomorrow we will be back in business. To help support the staff we are looking at introducing a takeaway only dinner service trialing from Friday and Saturday night 5.30pm fish, chips and burgers etc. We look forward to seeing you all. Thanks again for all the support and encouraging messages. The #MightyEdenMonaro is still kicking, our reserves of strength come from within and will sustain us. I’ll be working hard to make sure government support follows.

06.01.2022 I spoke in parliament last week about our gratitude to BlazeAid. The empathy and can-do attitude shown by these volunteers has been a beacon for the values that need to take us forward. Many will be familiar with the work of BlazeAid since the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires this army of volunteers have restored fencing in paddocks wiped out by natural disaster.... This year, in the #MightyEdenMonaro we have played host to camps at BlazeAid for Braidwood, BlazeAid Cobargo, BlazeAid Towamba, BlazeAid Bemboka, BlazeAid Tumbarumba & Surrounds, BlazeAid Bombala and Adelong BlazeAid Camp. The Braidwood community farewelled BlazeAid last week. 454 people have pitched in - providing assistance to 265 properties an effort estimated to be worth $1.8 million. The numbers are just as impressive at our other camps. These volunteers come from all walks of life and from right around the world 32 different countries were represented at Braidwood. They have travelled to some of the most remote and isolated parts of Eden-Monaro to kick start our recovery and renewal. On top of that their presence and interest alone gave such a lift to people during some of our hardest times. And while the camps at Bombala, Bemboka and Braidwood have now closed there is still much to do. Thank you to those who have given so freely, you will not be forgotten and we will look to pay your contribution forward in the future. And I encourage anyone looking for hope or looking to make a contribution, to volunteer at one of the remaining camps. Head to the BlazeAid website for everything you need to know - https://blazeaid.com.au/ Photo: Kerrin Thomas, ABC News.

05.01.2022 It was a real privilege to spend time in Cabramurra with Kent Allen recently. Kent is an Adelong boy and has worked for Snowy Hydro for 25 years. This place and the people its home to are special to him. He was here before, during and after the Dunns Road Fire came through on January 4. Thirty-five homes were lost, along with 3 blocks of flats, the school and other buildings. But look at what Kent and his small band of fire fighters were able to save.... Cabramurra is a critical town in Snowy Hydro's operations and I am pleased that they are committed to rebuilding it.

05.01.2022 A great day criss-crossing the Snowy Monaro including a talk and tour with Gordon, Dave and Cam from Cooma Monaro Railway Inc. The line to Queanbeyan was closed after flooding but over the last 28 years this dedicated group of volunteers has created a real asset for the region. They have grand plans for the future and hope to become even more of a destination for locals and visitors as their restoration work and telling of our history 'gathers steam' - boom tish!... Monthly fresh produce markets at the old Cooma Station support this good work. Come and purchase great local produce and inspect the work undertaken so far for yourself. The markets happen on the second Sunday of each month, the next on is January 10. Thanks for your time today Gordon, Dave and Cam and to everyone at Cooma Monaro Railway Inc. for your passion for our community. You can learn more here - http://cmrailway.org.au/

05.01.2022 What does that button do?! Snowy Hydro is such a proud part of our identity, but we don't often get to see this side of it - inside the Snowy Hydro control room. The control room runs 24/7 and covers all of Snowy's assets which can be remotely operated from this central location. Thanks for the work you do guys, making sure the lights stay on.

05.01.2022 First responders have been tested like never before in 2020. I've seen and heard first hand the quiet, mounting toll this can take on our emergency services and health care professionals - not to mention their family, friends and employers. This morning at Jerrabomberra Creek Rural Fire Brigade, I attended the launch of Fortem Australia which supports mental fitness and well-being in our first responders' community. It's a program supported with funding from the Australian De...partment of Home Affairs, so it was great to talk to locals with the Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud MP and Andrew Wallace - LNP Federal Member for Fisher. Fortem is the Latin word for strength, you can find out more here - https://fortemaustralia.org.au/

05.01.2022 Dropping in on the small businesses of Queanbeyan is a great way to check the mood and tempo of the local community and economy. And find out what needs doing. These guys have done it tough in 2020, they have my respect and support. All are hoping for a good Christmas for their businesses, their families, and their community. Support a local business this Christmas and add to the strength and resilience of your community.

05.01.2022 The effort around our Black Summer was broad and deep involving many people and organisations. The Bega District Rescue Squad NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc.played a critical role. Seeing their work first hard in those hot and heavy days it was important for me to attend their end of year get together and presentation of the NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation. They wear green, but these guys are solid gold.... If you are looking to spread a bit of Christmas generosity please consider Bega VRA. Their work takes them to some critical situations and is dependent on donations. 04.01.2022 Working together to secure timber jobs now and into the future for our different but connected regions; thank you to Helen Haines MP and Llew O'Brien MP for collaborating on this joint letter to the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology. We all recently met individually with Jon Kleinschmidt and Katie Fowden of Hyne Timber (pictured). One of the talking points was the government’s omission of forestry fibre as a manufacturing priority in the $1.5 billion Modern Manuf...acturing Strategy. The timber industry plays a key role in the communities we represent and with the support of the Australian Government, it could play a greater role locally and indeed more broadly in the growth of our national manufacturing sector. The omission of forestry from the strategy leaves its potential sitting idle, unable to access the support, thinking and focus similar industries will benefit from. You can read the full letter below or check out these two videos which highlight the potential we see - https://vimeo.com/515154016 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnh1z5JEX08 Working across states and party lines - thanks again Helen and Llew

04.01.2022 I am really happy this story was picked up by regional media this week including the Newcastle Herald, the Macleay Argus, The Canberra Times, The Courier in Ballarat, and beyond. As I said in parliament, "This is a worrying trend and has the potential to undermine the very confidence and investment needed to drive jobs and renewal."

03.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE FOR EDEN-MONARO - 3:30pm Dec 22, further advice from ACT Health COVID updates have replaced the Michael Buble Christmas album in the run up to December 25, but it’s really important we all stay engaged and informed. 02.01.2022 New projects have been announced under the NSW Bushfire Community Resilience and Recovery grants program. Community wellbeing, connectedness, social recovery, and future disaster resilience are a focus for the fund. Our community has come together at a time of great distress and trauma to put forward these projects. Resilience is always being tested and I am so proud of what’s been achieved so far.... These projects will make us stronger now and in the future and build on the lessons learned during our Black Summer, however, the need remains great. This is just the start of what needs to be ongoing government investment in our community as our needs change. Thank you to the community groups and councils doing this work, I have your back.
