25.01.2022 Blue faced Honeyeater Have you noticed the flash of a brilliant blue eye on a strikingly coloured olive, black and white bird recently? Blue faced Honeyeaters are making the most of flowering plants in our locality lately. While these Honeyeaters extract nectar from the blossoms of eucalypts, banksias, paperbarks and grevilleas, the bulk of their diet consists of insects. Blue faced Honeyeaters will happily relieve your garden of grasshoppers, termites and cockroaches, as well as beetles, bugs and spiders. Truly a bird to welcome into any backyard!

24.01.2022 Members of state parliament represent not only political parties but also their electorates. Keep Sandgate Beautiful has asked candidates about their views on issues that we think impact the way we live here in the electorate: climate change and its impact on our coast, potential redevelopment of state owned land at Deagon Racecourse and Cabbage Tree Creek, the impact of major roadworks like the Gateway Motorway upgrade on habitat for wildlife, protection of the Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetlands. We also asked the candidates to tell us what they think are the top issues for our electorate. So far, we have heard from Miree LeRoy and Clark Siemsen. Later today we will be posting their answers.

23.01.2022 We are excited to be able to offer a nature journaling workshop for 20 people with Dr Paula Peeters at Dowse Lagoon on Sunday 13th September from 9am to 11am. What is Nature Journaling? Paula says it’s the practice of drawing or writing in response to nature. A journal allows you to capture the moment and be in the moment. Your nature journal can be as artistic or as scientific as you like. It can be entirely objective and factual, or very reflective and personal. Or a combin...ation of all of these things. Nature Journaling is fun and relaxing, it helps you to connect with nature, and the result is your own unique nature journal. The practice calms your mind and increases your attention to detail and appreciation of beauty. Worried that you can’t draw or write? No problems! Paula will introduce you to some simple exercises that will help allay your fears and get those creative juices flowing. Nature journaling can be enjoyed by people of all levels of fitness and mobility, so it’s another way of enjoying the great outdoors when you’re not inclined to climb that mountain. Alternatively, you can take your nature journal with you on the next big hike and sketch the view from the top! If you would like to know more about Paula and her work, check out her website, Paperbark Writer https://www.paperbarkwriter.com/ Our next post will have the details of the event and how you can reserve a place. 22.01.2022 Such a lovely morning for planting and weeding at Dowse. I am amazed by how much can be achieved in such a short period of time. We started at 6:30 and were finished by 8:00am. If you want to get involved PM me for details. Many hands make light work.

22.01.2022 KSBA’s Citizen Science Project about the way birds use Dowse Lagoon got off to a great start on Saturday morning. David and Paul from Birds Queensland lead us around the lagoon so we could see the places from which we will make our observations. We’ll be using photos and checklists to record the birds we see, their locations, the weather conditions and the water levels which will give us information about seasonal changes around the lagoon. We are going to be working in group...s so more experienced people can help the less experienced. We learned about apps that can help us identify birds and record our findings. For example, we heard the beautiful call of the brown honeyeater and then were able to play the call on the app to check we had correctly identified the bird. Local resident, Sally who is working for National Science Week Qld and the World Science Festival Brisbane joined us on our walk to report on our project. Really looking forward to the next walk. Regards, Linda See more

15.01.2022 Australian Wood Duck or Maned Goose Fairly common near our local lagoons and ponds, Wood Ducks pairs can be seen with their broods of ducklings grazing on grasses and taking insects at this time of year. Wood Ducks nest in tree hollows near water, so large trees with hollows big enough to accommodate the sitting duck and her eggs are really important to have in our locality. And although the hollow provides perfect safety, once the ducklings hatch, things change quickly. The first thing they have to do is go to the edge of the tree hollow, survey the landscape below and jump. Because the ducklings are so small and light they typically sail down to the ground and the survival rate is high. The watchful parents then lead their brood to the nearest water, where the family remains for up to a month until the young are able to fly.

12.01.2022 Miree Le Roy Greens Candidate 1. Would you support State Government funding of the Environmental Defenders Office? Why or Why not? Absolutely I support funding of the EDO. I was probably as surprised and horrified as you to hear the recent LNP announcement that they would withdraw funding. The EDO plays an invaluable part assisting constituents to save environments at risk, from development. It is essential that the EDO remains available as the valuable service it...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Clark Siemsen LNP candidate sent a statement in response to our questions. Clark said he thinks it is important to keep the big projects out of politics and that timing is important with so much white noise. This is his statement. About Clark Siemsen I grew up in central and northern Queensland and started in scouts at the age of 8. With conservation as a core belief, I have loved being in and connected with the bush. I came to Brighton in 1987 and since becoming a Friend of... Gondwana at the Expo 88, I have followed climate change news and documentaries ever since. I have been a member of the Caboolture permaculture group and believe that we have the tools, skills and knowledge to correct ecosystems that are damaged. Greening of the Desert 2007 3rd February found on YouTube is a great example. Getting the message out and bringing others along is a challenge. Children are our greatest hope for the future. To lead Queensland to a more sustainable future I need to learn how to be sustainable myself. Thanks to an understanding wife, our house is a laboratory of technology, water storage and gardening and we have learnt many unexpected lessons As an electrician, I continually educate and help people to reduce consumption which is the first step to sustainability.. I am optimistic that 2020 will be a turning point of new possibilities and a more sustainable future. See more

08.01.2022 Common Koel Welcome back to the gorgeously patterned and richly coloured Common Koels, freshly arrived from wintering in Asia. Female koels are beautifully mottled brown, black and white while the males are iridescent, glossy black. Sometimes known as storm birds; their mournful, monotonous cooees often seem to precede afternoon storms in summer. ... The Koel pair are looking for Honeyeater or Figbird nests to lay their egg, allowing the Koels to completely leave the raising of their demanding chick to the foster parents In our locality figs and fruiting palms provide a food source for these summer migrants. 05.01.2022 KSBA Birds In Back Yards # 2 Figbird. Have you noticed a musical chortling lately coming from a small flock of birds on the overhead wires or in your backyard trees and bushes? At this time of year Australasian Figbirds, or just Figbirds for short, are foraging for the fruit on our beautiful local fig trees, or perhaps on fruiting natives in your yard. A flash of red indicates the male figbird with his brilliant red eye patches while the female has a striking cream and brown... striped breast. The gregarious habits of the Figbirds carries over into nesting behaviour with pairs breeding in neighbouring trees. While Figbirds are predominantly fruit eaters, local residents have observed them feeding on the seeds of native trees and even taking insects. KSBA would be interested to hear if you have observed these birds locally and what they were feeding on. See more

03.01.2022 Cabbage Tree Creek development EOI update KSBA has been told by Transport and Main Roads officers that there were no proposals from the June EOI to replace trawler berths and build a facility to sell prawns fresh from the trawler that would be suitable for developing into a project at this time. The EOI will not be re-opened and TMR is now going to make the most urgent repairs on the trawler berths. In a meeting that resulted from our letter to the Minister, the officers fro...m TMR Strategic Property section answered KSBA questions about the extent of the land available for redevelopment (the land opposite the public boat ramp between the road and the golf course and a strip along the creek from the boat ramp to the end of the nine trawler berths). They said the land is within the boundaries of the Sandgate District Neighbourhood Plan and the way the land is used is regulated by the BCC Town Plan in which it is zoned SC6 Specialised centre (Marina). They also said that all projects must comply with relevant legislation including environmental legislation. The process outlined in the EOI documentation makes the communication of project detail and community engagement the responsibility of the preferred developer with oversight by the State Government. This means community engagement will only occur if and when a proposal has been accepted by the State Government. KSBA continues to be of the view that this process misses an opportunity for planning that not only provides for development in support of recreational and professional fishing and boating but also plans for high quality greenspace that supports the wider recreational needs of the community and relieves the pressure of high visitor numbers on the foreshore and around the Shorncliffe Escarpment. 03.01.2022 Stirling Hinchliffe Labor Party Candidate and sitting member When I started these posts this morning, I said that I had responses from the Greens and LNP candidates. This was wrong as I had also received Stirling Hinchliffe’s answers. I wish to apologise to Stirling for my error. These are his responses. 1. Would you support State Government funding of the Environmental Defenders Office? Why or why not? The Palaszczuk Labor Government supports the hard work of the Environmen...Continue reading
