25.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #throwbackthursday "A Taste of Tudor" (1981) marked the first time that Kucom or any other group in Mackay had undertaken an historical costume drama or a period-style theatre supper. The evening consisted of two dramatic presentations - "The Rose without a Thorn" by Clifford Bax, directed by Geoff McLean; and "Mill Hill" by John Mortimer, directed by Ian Hobday - followed by a Tudor supper. Whatever became of those sumptuous costumes?
23.01.2022 A big thank-you to Woolworths - giving back to the community! In these troubled times it's great to see big retailers coming to the aid of small community groups with much-needed donations - in this case, a storage container, delivered this morning much to the delight of Kucom members (from left) Bronwyn Grannall, Luana Royle, Joe Clutterbuck and Maureen Coleman. Kucom Theatre recently re-opened its doors to patrons with a season of one-act plays titled 'May Contain Nuts', which was enthusiastically welcomed by returning patrons starved of live entertainment over the past few months, and further productions are planned for later in the year. For more information and updates, keep watching the Kucom Facebook page or visit our website: www.kucom.org.au

19.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #throwbackthursday "Johnny Belinda" was a daring play to stage in 1963. Written in 1940 by Elmer Blaney Harris, it deals with the subjects of rape, murder, bastardy, abuse of a deaf-mute, bigotry and gossip in a small community. Directed by Col Paull, the Mackay Community Theatre production featured well-known local performers of the day such as Jan Smith, Jim Bussell and Esme Kean.
16.01.2022 ONLY TWO MORE SHOWS TO GO! Well, technically three but Saturday night is sold out. Some tickets are still available for tonight and tomorrow, but they’re going.fast so don’t miss out. Hop on to the MECC website and grab your seats, or phone the MECC Box Office on 49619777. #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy
15.01.2022 PREVIEW BIG BAD MOUSE thoroughly recommended for a fun night out! #kucomedy #bigbadmouse #kucomtheatre... They say that if you can remember the ‘60s, you weren’t really there. This is certainly not the case for Geoff Stewart-McLean, director of Kucom Theatre’s current production, Big Bad Mouse. Born and raised in England, Geoff cherishes distant memories of London during the psychedelic ‘sixties of free love, burnt bras, purple hearts and flowers in your hair, and has captured the spirit of the age in his presentation of this classic adult farce. Written by Phillip King and Falkland L Carey, Big Bad Mouse was first staged in 1964 but did not become a box office hit until British comedy legends Jimmy Edwards and Eric Sykes took over the lead roles and toured the show across the UK in 1966 and 1967. It was also a top attraction in London's West End for three years between 1967 and 1970, and has enjoyed many revivals since then. A farce in the true Whitehall tradition, this production is a snapshot from the past, a piece of froth and bubble. Don’t expect political correctness here. Some of the attitudes and opinions aired by characters in the play would not go down very well in today’s more sober social climate. Big Bad Mouse is unashamedly a child of the ‘60s, and that’s how it is presented as a period piece, a flashback, not to be taken seriously. The plot is a simple one: timid little Mr Bloome is generally bullied and treated badly by his boss, the domineering and pompous Mr Price-Hargraves. When a flasher and stalker chases a young woman across Wandsworth Common, Bloome is accused of being the flasher by the victim and a police detective, and suddenly becomes an object of great interest to his female co-workers. As Mr Bloome, Gordon Lowe represents the epitome of downtrodden meekness, with drooping shoulders and constantly harried expression. But under that mild and apologetic exterior there lurks a hint of steel, as he politely but stubbornly insists on attending to his duties while all around him chaos reigns, with the two office juniors, Fiona and Harold (Leticia Harberger and Tobi Loftus), snogging each other at every possible opportunity while Mr Price-Hargraves (John Manning) makes awful ‘daddy’ jokes and bellows ‘OUT’ at anyone who ventures through the office door, and the faithful and besotted Miss Spencer (Stephanie Jones) prances adoringly in his wake like a giggling gazelle. Sarah Neivandt as the imperious Lady Chesapeake, the owner of the business, lends a sobering gravitas to the proceedings in the first act, but this swiftly disintegrates as her interest in Mr Bloome is piqued by his new-found notoriety. The unlikely cause of this notoriety, the frumpy, bespectacled Doris Povey, is played to perfection by Carolyn Roche with a fine balance of earnestness and hysteria. Her final confrontation with Mr Bloome following his Jekyll and Hyde transformation is a comic highlight. Special mention should be made of the set on which all this takes place, lovingly constructed to replicate a typical 1960s office, complete with chunky furniture, rotary telephones, and the obligatory yellow-and-brown décor of the day. Set designer John Irvine has once again created a masterpiece of solid construction, where the doors can be slammed and the walls don’t even quiver! Coupled with this is a medley of music tracks underlining the action, nostalgic tunes straight from the ‘60s that will have you singing right along with them. Big Bad Mouse is on at Kucom Theatre, 1 Snow Wright Court, Andergrove. Season dates: Thu 22nd, Fri 23rd, Sat 24th, Thu 29th, Fri 30th April and Sat 1st May Bookings through TryBooking: https://www.trybooking.com/BPCJK
15.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday It's 1966, and Mackay Community Theatre presents the classic comedy, 'Doctor at Sea'. Do you remember this production? Can you identify any of the cast members in these photos? We'd love to hear from you if you can help us put names to any of these happy far-off faces.
15.01.2022 Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, First Things First has been postponed until late this year. A more definite date will be released as soon as possible. #mackaylocal #visitmackay #postpone
14.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday In the 1970s, a group of disillusioned members broke away from Mackay Community Theatre to form Kudos Theatre. Their first production was the Feydeau farce, 'Hotel Paradiso' (1976) - here are some photos from that production. Kudos only lasted a couple of years before merging back with the Community Theatre - thus the Ku from Kudos and the Com from Community formed Kucom Theatre Inc. - but in that brief space of time they presented some classics including 'A Day in the Death of Joe Egg', 'Abelard and Heloise', 'Habeas Corpus', 'Move Over, Mrs Markham', 'Private Lives', 'Sweeney Todd', and 'The Glass Menagerie'.
14.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday After leaving Shakespeare Street at the end of 2011, Kucom staged productions at a variety of venues, including the historic Paxtons Warehouse on the river. 2016 saw the revival of 'The Diary of Anne Frank' (previously staged at the Theatre Royal in 1984), and the debut of Daniel O'Neill as director of a major production for Kucom Theatre.

13.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #throwbackthursday Rumours American playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon is widely regarded as one of the most successful, prolific and performed playwrights in theatre history, so it came as no surprise that director Heather MacTavish chose to direct the British version of his farce, Rumours, for Kucom Theatre in 2006. This classic farce follows four couples who have all been invited to a dinner party to celebrate a fifth couple's 10th anniver...sary. When the guests discover the host has shot himself, his wife is missing, and dinner hasn't been prepared, they rush to concoct a cover story that might satisfy a police investigation because their host is none other than the Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance, and a scandal is to be avoided at all costs. The tiny stage in the Shakespeare Street theatre was transformed into a stunning multi-level interior to accommodate the elegantly attired dinner guests: Chris and Ken (played by Rowena Marshall and Jim Kelly), Claire and Leonard (Bronwyn Grannall and John Atkinson), Ernest and Cookie (Wayne Hughes and Aggie Partridge), and Glenn and Cassie (Chris French and Krystan Bird). Geoff Stewart McLean and Maureen Coleman also appeared in Act II as PC Conklin and WPC Casey, who turn up at an inopportune moment to investigate reported suspicious activities. The rest of the story as told to the police officers by the panicked guests can be summed up by PC Conklin: I don’t believe one bloomin’ blinkin’ bit of poppycock I’ve heard in this room. I believe there were gunshots here tonight. I think someone or everyone is trying to cover up something here. Double BMW accidents, two men with blood on their shirt fronts, one caused by a fork wound during dinner, the host takes a short legged dog for a long walk and then goes to sleep, the hostess takes her father to hospital with a broken hip in Manchester and no-one hears two gunshots because everyone is dancing ... including a woman named Cookie who’s been cooking all night who can’t sit, stand or walk ... You’ll have to do better than that. In the end, of course, everything turns out just fine well, almost. See more
13.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday Ron Patterson has only 111 minutes left to live and he invites the kids around for sausage rolls, salads and a bit of quality time. As he attempts to tie up the loose ends of his life, all the juicy neuroses of his very dysfunctional family come to the fore. Australian playwright Elizabeth Coleman first came to attention with her dark comedy 'It’s My Party (And I’ll Die If I Want To)', which premiered at the 1993 Melbourne Comedy Fes...tival and has been regularly produced ever since. Kucom's 2010 production featured Joe Clutterbuck, Maureen Coleman, Lachlan Halliwell, Sheryn Dempster, Bella Raymond and Connor Bashford (who has since moved on to become a professional actor and assistant director: https://imdb.to/354Jlmk). When illness forced one of the cast to withdraw from the show, stage manager Bill Wall was called upon to fill the gap - his performance as the bemused funeral director was a comic masterpiece, and a new Kucom star was born! In 1999 Elizabeth’s next play,' Secret Bridesmaids’ Business', broke box office records in Melbourne. It has been produced many times since, including by Kucom Theatre in 2007 but that will have to wait for another #ThrowbackThursday! See more
11.01.2022 It’s been a tough year and there hasn’t been much opportunity for socialising, so we’ve decided to go out in style with a Club Night to be held at 7pm on Saturday 12 December. BYO food (in sealed containers we are still bound by COVID regulations in this regard). The bar will be open. If you have a ‘party piece’ you’d like to share, please let us know so we can program it in. Just email details to [email protected], or message us here on Facebook. #kucomclubnight #christmasbreakup
11.01.2022 UPDATE Nearly everyone from last night’s audience returned for Act II this afternoon (there were just a couple of people who couldn’t make it due to prior commitments) and the whole thing worked like a charm. Thank you, everyone, for coming back and giving us the opportunity to entertain you some more. There were some hearty chucklers out there, and the hilarity quickly spread. What a great afternoon!

'First Things First' is a great laugh. Book your seat at the MECC." (C.H.) "The friend I was with last night was crying with laughter in some places." (C.M.)
06.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday 'Night Watch', a thriller by Lucille Fletcher (who also wrote the classic 'Sorry, Wrong Number'), was Kucom's final production before moving out of the old Shakespeare Street theatre at the end of 2011. Director Heather MacTavish was presented with a portfolio of (slightly doctored) images from the production, which caused her some amusement. Sadly, 'Night Watch' was also the last production to involve our much-beloved President, Sue Stock, who passed away early the following year and is still sadly missed by all of us who knew her.
06.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #throwbackthursday Kucom first full-length production after moving into their new premises at Snow Wright Court, Andergrove, was 'The Sum of Us' by Australian playwright David Stevens. Stevens is probably best remembered for directing the mini-series 'A Town Like Alice' and co-authoring (with Jonathan Hardy and Bruce Beresford) the 'Breaker Morant' screenplay. 'The Sum of Us' revolves around the comfortable relationship between widower Harry and his gay son Jeff and their individual searches for the right mate. in 1994 it was adapted into a film starring Russell Crowe and Jack Thompson. Kucom's production of the stage play, directed by Kath Evans, featured Zachary Trounson, Hapi Anaru, Jim Kelly and Kelly Gregg.
05.01.2022 OPENING TONIGHT! #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy 'First Things First', written by Derek Benfield and directed by Maureen Coleman, opens this Thursday and runs for just 6 performances - season dates 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 November, bookings (essential) through the MECC Box Office: https://bit.ly/2H9wGGB. Mayor Williamson's appointment will be formally ratified at the Kucom Annual General Meeting early in the new year. We would also like to take this opportunity to say a warm thank you to former Councillor Kevin Casey, who has worked tirelessly on our behalf over the past eight years and is now looking forward to enjoying a well-earned retirement.

03.01.2022 Back to My105FM yesterday morning for another chat with Dave: https://bit.ly/34zKXpd
03.01.2022 First Things First is now (briefly) a mini-series! Owing to a lengthy power outage, tonight’s performance had to be terminated before the start of Act II - which will now be presented tomorrow afternoon at a special matinee, much to the delight of the lovely people in the audience who were enjoying the show and are keen to come back to find out what happens next. Thank you to our front-of-house people for handling the situation so professionally and ensuring the safety and well-being of our patrons - and to our patrons for their patience and good humour throughout. #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy
03.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday 1958 saw the presentation of 'The Hasty Heart' by American playwright John Patrick. Set in a convalescent ward in a temporary British General Hospital behind the Assam-Burma front in 1945, the play tells the story of a group of wounded Allied soldiers rallying around a loner, unappreciative Scottish soldier they know is dying. To cast this play today (with 8 males and only one female) would present a formidable challenge to any community theatre director, but co-producer 'Skip' Porteous was clearly up to the task.
02.01.2022 #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy Now that the pantomime is over (congratulations to Joe Clutterbuck and the Kucom Youth Drama Group for a hugely successful season), it's time for some grown-up comedy. 'First Things First', written by Derek Benfield and directed by Maureen Coleman, opens this Thursday and runs for just 6 performances - season dates 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 November, bookings (essential) through the MECC Box Office: https://bit.ly/2H9wGGB. Don't miss out - tickets are already selling fast - in fact, there are ONLY 2 SEATS LEFT for the final performance on 14 November
02.01.2022 We will be holding auditions on Sunday 13 December at 2pm, for a season of one-act plays to be staged in February 2021. 01.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #tbt #ThrowbackThursday 1983, and it's 'Stop the World, I Want To Get Off!' featuring Mel Bell and an assortment of Kucom lovelies (Carol Adair, Julie Davies, Sue Stock and Lana Duffy) - complete with a small live orchestra including Tony Humble and Barbara Bowerman. If you look closely at the orchestra you may even catch a glimpse of Life Member Lorraine Smith!
01.01.2022 Thanks, Jay and Dave, for giving me the opportunity to chat with you this morning.
01.01.2022 A REMINDER ..... ..... to everyone who has booked to see the show: although you purchased your tickets through the MECC Box Office, the actual performance is at Kucom Theatre, 1 Snow Wright Court, Andergrove - not at the MECC. We're looking forward to seeing you at Kucom tonight for the final performance of 'First Things First'. #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy
01.01.2022 FIRST THINGS FIRST #FirstThingsFirst #kucomedy What a great audience we had for our opening night at Kucom! You laughed in all the right places (and even in some quite unexpected ones). Special thanks to outgoing Kucom Patron Kevin Casey and incoming Patron Mayor Greg Williamson for taking the time out from their busy schedules to come along and show their support. ... Tickets are still available for tomorrow and Saturday night, and for Thursday and Friday next week - but not for the final night because that’s already sold out. Bookings through the MECC Box Office 4961 9777 or online at https://bit.ly/2H9wGGB. See more
