25.01.2022 As part of child protection week our children were showcased singing in Gumbaynggirr showing their strength in culture.

24.01.2022 There has been discussion amongst our children regarding the images that they are seeing on tv about the Black Lives Matter protests. As parents and educators it is our belief that promoting strong cultural values will strengthen the children’s awareness and pride in their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture and Heritage. Conversations with preschool age children can be about basic concepts such as the difference of skin colour and that sometimes people are treate...d differently because of the colour of their skin. Regardless of age it is important to balance the reality of racism and unfairness with messages about the possibility of change and that they can with their own actions and words be that change. Below is a video that we have used today to facilitate in an age appropriate way the concept of racism and unfairness. Please take the time to watch it and maybe start a conversation with your children.

17.01.2022 During Friday's music lesson the children participated in singing, listening and playing instruments with Tracey. The children sang "When I was One" followed by playing the song on the tapping sticks. A music and movement experience followed as the children sang "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree" in Gumbaynggirr. The children were given scarves and ribbons and encouraged to freely move around the room to replicate the motion of flying.... To conclude the children participated in a listening experience. Tracey played and instrument and the children had to guess the name of the instrument. The instruments included a tamborine, chime bar and tapping sticks. The lyrics of ‘When I was One’ are included below if you wish to sing the song at home with your child. " When I was One, one, one, I play on my drum, drum, drum. When I was two, two, two, I play on my shoe, shoe, shoe. When I was three, three, three, I play on my knee, knee, knee. When I was four, four, four, I play on the floor, floor, floor. When I was five, five, five, I do the jive, jive, jive. When I was six, six, six, out down your sticks, sticks, sticks.

13.01.2022 Today we celebrate Indigenous Children’s Literacy Day. At Kulai we value reading and the benefits it has to our children’s cognitive development which include brain development in areas of social skills and communication. Reading helps your child to learn sounds, words and language as they develop their early literacy skills. At Kulai we always include reading both to the children and independently as part of the daily program as it teaches the children the value of stories a...nd books. We are also lucky to have our Rotary readers come to a Kulai to extend on this experience with the children by reading to them each day. Reading sparks imagination and stimulates children’s curiosity.... What will your family read today?

09.01.2022 Winter warmers.... This week our children have watched their sour dough mother grow, today they turned that into a delicious loaf of crusty sourdough bread. Using seasonal vegetables they also created vegan pumpkin soup to go with their bread. As an extension of our paddock to plate style of cooking experiences this term the children planted pumpkin seedlings which had been grown from seeds by one of our lovely families. We are all looking forward to watching them grow and the children are discussing what we can cook with them.

Caroline read to both classes four of her own published picture books, which all of the children and staff reallly enjoyed. Caroline explained to the Kulai children the process of how a picture book comes to be, she showed them what a rough draft looks like and also what it looks like with the edits made.... Caroline also explained the importance of the illustrations and the different techniques used to produce the pictures. Thank you Caroline for visiting us and a special thank you to our Early Childhood Education student Victoria who is completing her final university prac with us for organising this experience for our children.

05.01.2022 Science has shown that music’s effect on the brain develops every aspect of the child; intelligence, language, movement, social and emotional well being. The most effective way is through singing and musical games. This is what Kulai has been intergrating into their preschool program for over 20 years. Throughout the term we will be sharing more about the benifits of music and the children’s growth.
