14.01.2022 Alright folks, this is going to be a very difficult story to tell, but I feel compelled to share this information. This past week has been an extremely difficul...t journey for us. Our sweet baby Lily got into one of my houseplants and ended up fighting for her life at the emergency vet for nearly a week. She is now home with a feeding tube and a medication schedule that spans from 7 AM until 12 AM daily. There have been many tears shed, dollars spent, and guilt felt... all because of a $5 plant. I’d like to spread the word about this houseplant because I had no idea when I purchased it from a big box garden center last summer that this little 6-inch plant would become my nightmare. The Sago Palm is a common house plant and landscaping plant native to tropical regions. All parts of the plants are extremely toxic to humans and animals causing liver failure and death from even minimal exposure. All parts includes the trunk, roots, leaves, and small berry-like seeds that can develop on mature plants. I have seen this plant for sale on the shelves at Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot sitting among other harmless household plants with zero warning label attached. ***Update: On Saturday, May 16, Lily passed away in our arms. She fought hard, loved hard, and gave us a couple butt wiggles just before she just couldn’t fight any longer. We loved her so very much and gave her all the love and care in the weeks since the incident we could possibly give. We are truly devastated. If you are a houseplant lover, please research your house plants prior to purchasing. Even if you think the house plant is in a secure location, mischievous little paws may still get into trouble. Feel free to share this story. You may just save a life. https://www.aspca.org//animal-p/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

14.01.2022 ** HOT CROSS BUNS DEADLY TO PETS French Bulldog brothers Frankie and Louis recently caused their human family some pre-Easter chaos when they decided to exchang...e their morning kibble for a stash of juicy green grapes! Grapes and grape products, including sultanas, raisins, currants, and our beloved HOT CROSS BUNS, are extremely poisoning to dogs; toxicity can cause severe kidney failure. No amount of grapes or grape containing products are considered safe for dogs. Vomiting and diarrhea are the initial signs of grape toxicity; these symptoms usually begin about 6-12 hours after ingestion; this is then followed by general lack of energy, weakness, dehydration, thirst, and failure to produce an adequate amount of urine. Fatal kidney dysfunction can develop in 1-3 days. If vomiting is induced very quickly after ingestion, as it was for these lucky pups, this can help to reduce the absorption and limit the severity of the symptoms. Frankie and Louis are lucky that their family acted so quickly, and it is looking like the gorgeous boys will make a full recovery. Grape, or in our current season, Hot Cross Bun poisoning should be treated as an emergency, so regardless of symptoms being visible or not, please always seek emergency veterinary treatment. At SASH, we are here for you 24/7 across our North Ryde and Tuggerah hospitals.

07.01.2022 UPDATE: WE NOW HAVE FOSTER HOMES FOR BOTH OF THESE BEAUTIFUL BOYS NSW foster carers, we need you!!! A follow up from our post last night, we are despe...rately trying to find carers in NSW for these two gorgeous boys, Bubba (left) & Benji (right). Both are big mastiff boof heads who need patient and willing people to help us bust them out of the pounds! Bubba, who is 5, will need to be in a home with kids 15+ as he is a puppy in a big boys body and is unaware of his size. He is a huge love bug who loves to be with people, but can be jumpy when excited and meeting new people as he hasn’t been taught his doggy manners. When he’s not meeting new people, he can be a really chill dog, just hanging out at home. We have been told he is good with other dogs but would preferably be dogs of his size as he’s a very excitable young lad! He is already desexed. Benji, who is still a puppy at 1 years old, will need to be an only dog. He is terrified in the pound right now and unsure of everything as he doesn’t understand why he’s been left. He would be best suited to a confident and patient family who understand he will need ongoing training to help build his confidence back up and slowly introduce socialisation with other dogs. It is preferred that you have a house with a secure yard so these guys have some room to settle into foster care. If you think you can help either of these gorgeous boys please contact us ASAP on our Facebook page or email us at [email protected]
