25.01.2022 Time to rehash the hot animal post!! Keep yourselves and your pets cool - Tuesday is set to be a scorcher!!!
25.01.2022 My friend Leigh at Your Vet Online has put up a good post on snake repellers (and our snake at the dam Charlie even got his pic online :-) - they don't work and aren't great for your pets either. The snakes are certainly out and about - follow Leigh's tips for keeping them away from the house and if you see one, leave it alone! Most bites are from people trying to kill or move snakes. Leave them be and they will wriggle off as a rule. If they have made a permanent home right on your doorstep there are some great snake catchers on the coast who will come and catch and relocate them. Stay safe peeps!
24.01.2022 Dr Kylie Greentree from Hunter LLS has put out a timely message - Make sure you goats (and sheep) are wormed if required. Blanket worming every 2 months creates resistance so only those that need to be wormed should. Have a chat to your local vet about identifying worming needs or go to wormboss. http://www.wormboss.com.au/sheep-goats/programs/goats.php "The season has continued to be ideal for barber's pole and consequently we are seeing several properties with issues. 16.01.2022 There has been a bit in the media lately about Ehrlichiosis. My Friend has a great little page about this tick borne disease that has been found in the NT. https://www.yourvetonline.com/ehrlichiosis-in-dogs/
15.01.2022 With all the lush green grass around be careful of laminitis. This is a serious condition and treatment has a huge management component.
13.01.2022 Kulnura Vets are proud authorised resellers of Numnuts. With the world looking at better welfare in farm animals this is a great extra part of pain relief in the docking and castration process. Couple with oral buccalgesic it’s the best standard in pain relief for these procedures in lambs.
13.01.2022 Backyard bird count week starts tomorrow. This is especially important in our area this year after the fires - see what is in your back yard - start counting and logging results. It's easy fun and you never know what amazing birds you may see in your own back yard! https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/
11.01.2022 Perfect weather for your cow starter it :-) On a more serious note the round is very very very wet, and it is going to get hot. This is the perfect storm for fungal foot and skin infections and hoof abscesses. Let your horses go naked, make sure hooves are picked out well and if possible try to move them to a new paddock that isn't as bad a bog site. I am a huge fan of iodine foot baths or sprays to get rid of the nasty bugs in hooves and feet- there are plenty of iodine sprays on the market or dilute iodine solution so it looks like a cup of tea - then it isn't too concentrated which can burn. Chat to your farrier or vet before things go too far - thrush, greasy heel and abscesses can be quite the punish to treat once they get a foot hold!
10.01.2022 If we can spread the word then maybe people will throw these in the bin and cut the elastic/straps.
08.01.2022 Tick season is here - warm weather and as soon as we have some moisture they are out in droves. Chat your vet about what preventative is best for your dog in your environment and remember, no preventative is 100% guaranteed. Make sure you check your pets over every day. Here is an ID chart for you. Take care!
06.01.2022 Horsie people - this is something to keep an eye on over the coming month/year. African Horse sickness has moved south into Malaysia. Animal Health Australia is keeping an eye on it and reviewing systems.....just in case. African Horse Sickness update. Concerning news today that African Horse Sickness has now been found in Malaysia.... AHS is a serious viral disease of horses and is exotic to Australia. It has potential for serious and rapid spread and is important in the international trade of horses. The virus is transmitted to horses by biting midges of the genus Culicoides. It is not spread by aerosol or direct contact between infected and noninfected animals and it does not infect humans. This is the first time AHS has occurred in Malaysia but there was an AHS outbreak in neighbouring Thailand earlier this year. It is understood that horse movements within, and out of, Malaysia are being controlled. Australia does not import horses from Malaysia. More info here at Animal Health Australia. https://www.animalhealthaustralia.com.au/ahs/
